NXT 2/21/18 Review: The End For Johnny Wrestling?

Published

on

NXT on February 21, 2018, was a good show that is building up characters, storylines, and feuds down the road. Let’s break it down:

We start off the show with a video package hyping up Andrade “Cien” Almas Vs. Johnny Gargano for the NXT Championship. This is good as it’s hyping up the main event for this show which should be awesome. Well produced video package here.

No Way Jose Vs. Velveteen Dream was a good match. This match was announced by Velveteen Dream last week and these two worked pretty well together as the interactions between the two characters were fun to watch.

No Way Jose did get some nice offense in this match as he hit a nice plancha on Velveteen Dream. Velveteen Dream continues to impress every time he’s in the ring as his Death Valley Driver while doing a cartwheel on No Way Jose was impressive. Good work by both men here.

The ending of the match came when Velveteen Dream hit No Way Jose with The Purple Rainmaker (Diving elbow drop) for the pin and win. A good win for Velveteen Dream as he continues to make his name in NXT.

After the match, Velveteen Dream grabbed a mic and said the Male of the Competitor of the Year, Overall Competitor of the Year, and Match of the Year belongs to him because no one cares about Aleister Black, Asuka, or Tyler Bate. He then said that if no one believes in him, then he’ll just ignore them because he knows he is the dream.

Velveteen Dream being very confident here and it’s only going to grow as time goes by. Let’s see who Velveteen Dream will feud with next. Say his name!

Good match and I’m interested to see what’s next for No Way Jose and Velveteen Dream in NXT.

We then see Zelina Vega and Andrade “Cien” Almas backstage as Zelina Vega is pumping up Andrade “Cien” Almas with some motivational words as Andrade “Cien” Almas defends the NXT Championship against Johnny Gargano later on the show. It seems like Zelina Vega and Andrade “Cien” Almas may have a game plan for Johnny Gargano, but let’s see if they will succeed.

We then get an announcement from William Regal that in two weeks, the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic will return and not only the winners will win the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Cup, but will also become the next #1 Contenders for the NXT Tag Team Championships at NXT New Orleans.

Oh my god, the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic is back! Mark out moment! I was wondering when the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic will return and I thought it will never return since they didn’t have last year, but I’m glad it’s back. Can’t wait to see which teams are in it and I’m looking forward to the matches as well.

Nikki Cross Vs. Vanessa Borne was a good women’s match. This was a good women’s match that showcased both women pretty well.

Vanessa Borne got some nice offense in this match as she hit a nice spinning leg hook slam on Nikki Cross. Nikki Cross continued to show her craziness in the ring as she ran against Vanessa Borne once the bell rang and her diving crossbody on Nikki Cross was well executed. Good work by both women here.

The ending of the match came when Nikki Cross hit Vanessa Borne with The Purge (Swinging fisherman’s neckbreaker) for the pin and win. A good win for Nikki Cross as she looks to be on top of the NXT Women’s division. Let’s play!

Good women’s match and I want to see what’s next for Nikki Cross and Vanessa Borne in NXT.

We then get a recap of the confrontation between Aleister Black and Killian Dain from last week. This is good as it shows what happened last week for those who have missed it or forgot about it. In addition, I have a feeling these two will face each other in a #1 Contender’s match for the NXT Championship so we’ll see.

We then see Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae backstage as Johnny Gargano is getting ready for his match against Andrade “Cien” Almas later on the show. It’s all or nothing for Johnny Gargano so let’s see if he can win the big one or go home without a job.

We then see a tweet from Shane Thorne about the return of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic as TM-61 did compete in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic in 2016 and were in the finals as they look to become this year’s winners. Nice little touch with TMDK there from Shane Thorne going back to their days in NOAH. TM-61 seems to be in this tournament so let’s see what other teams will be in this year’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.

We then get a recap of what happened last week when Kairi Sane attacked Shayna Baszler during the NXT Women’s Championship match as it was announced next week, it will be Kairi Sane Vs. Shayna Baszler. A rematch of the finals of the Mae Young Classic and I’m looking forward to that as I think that match will be a #1 Contender’s match, but we’ll see.

Andrade “Cien” Almas Vs. Johnny Gargano for the NXT Championship was an excellent match. Mark out moment! These two men just have amazing chemistry with each other and this match between them was no different.

Johnny Gargano did excellent in this match as he was trying to keep his job in NXT. Not only was Johnny Gargano was fighting for his career, but Candice LeRae was also helping Johnny Gargano as she took out Zelina Vega with a suicide dive as both women fought and went to the back making the match even. His cannonball senton from the ring apron to the floor on Andrade “Cien” Almas was well executed. His slingshot spear on Andrade “Cien” Almas looked devastating.

Andrade “Cien” Almas did excellent in this match as well to show why he is the NXT Champion. The way he was working on Johnny Gargano’s arm throughout the whole match was excellent in-ring psychology. His one-arm powerbomb to the corner followed by a running double knees to the corner on Johnny Gargano looked like it destroyed Johnny Gargano. His running double knees to the back of Johnny Gargano’s head in the corner looked like it killed Johnny Gargano.

There was a spot in the match where I thought it was over when Johnny Gargano hit the slingshot DDT on Andrade “Cien” Almas, but Andrade “Cien” Almas managed to kick out. Man, I really thought Johnny Gargano would win there. Excellent work by both men here.

The ending of the match came when Andrade “Cien” Almas accidentally hit the referee with a back elbow which led to Johnny Gargano locking in the Gargano Escape (Chickenwing over the shoulder crossface) on Andrade “Cien” Almas, but Tommaso Ciampa came in with his crutch and used it against Johnny Gargano as he left the ring afterwards where Andrade “Cien” Almas hit the Hammerlock DDT on Johnny Gargano for the pin and win to retain the NXT Championship.

Wow, just wow. Dang you Tommaso Ciampa! You cost Johnny Gargano’s career in NXT! How dare you! Thanks to you, Johnny Gargano is gone from NXT. However, I can’t deny that this makes me hate Tommaso Ciampa even more because what he did was such a heel act and I applaud him for it. Very happy that Andrade “Cien” Almas kept the NXT Championship because I’m really enjoying his reign as of late, but it came at a cost with Johnny Gargano leaving NXT and that makes me sad.

After the match, Candice LeRae came in the ring to check on Johnny Gargano as Johnny Gargano looked in the crowd one last time as he headed up the stage and went to the back along with Candice LeRae as the fans in Center Stage applaud and thanked Johnny Gargano for everything he has done in NXT. Once Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae left the stage, we see Tommaso Ciampa in the crowd waving goodbye at them as the crowd in Center Stage booed him.

Once again, Tommaso Ciampa, your heelish act makes me hate you so much, but it’s so good at the same time so I applaud you for that. Now, I don’t know if Johnny Gargano is really leaving NXT for good because I still think the feud between him and Tommaso Ciampa will continue in NXT in some capacity. However, if this is his last match and appearance in NXT, then all I have to say is thank you, Johnny Gargano, as you brought a lot of amazing matches and incredible moments for the NXT fans/marks such as myself. You will be missed and I have a feeling that you’ll be on the main roster and possibly be in the cruiserweight division so I wish him luck there. Thank you, Johnny Gargano!

Excellent match and thank you, Johnny Gargano!

Overall, a good show that is building up characters, storylines, and feuds down the road. Next week, we will get Kairi Sane Vs. Shayna Baszler which should be interesting to see. Looking forward to it. NXT! NXT! NXT!
