NXT 2/28/18 Review: Fade to Black or Chaos For El Idolo?

NXT on February 28, 2018, was a great show that is building up characters, storylines, and feuds for the near future. Let’s break it down:

We start off the show with a video package highlighting Andrade “Cien” Almas Vs. Johnny Gargano for the NXT Championship. This is good as it shows what happened last week in case people missed it or forgot about it. Well produced video package here.

Tyler Bate Vs. Velveteen Dream was an excellent match. Mark out moment! These two went out there and delivered an excellent match where neither man looked weak in the process.

Tyler Bate did excellent in this match as he tried to get back on track after losing a lot as of late. His headbutt to Velveteen Dream looked like it hurt Velveteen Dream and his own head. Excellent work by Tyler Bate here.

Velveteen Dream did excellent in this match as well to continue to show why he is a future champion in NXT. His spinebuster to Tyler Bate looked devastating as he slammed Tyler Bate down hard. Excellent work by Velveteen Dream here.

The ending of the match came when Velveteen Dream hit Tyler Bate with a Purple Rainmaker (Diving elbow drop) for the pin and win. Another win for Velveteen Dream as he looks to continue making his name in NXT. Say his name!

Excellent match and I can’t wait to see what’s next for Velveteen Dream in NXT.

The backstage promo from Authors of Pain and Paul Ellering was good. Paul Ellering talked about how they’re a lot of teams that have stars in their eyes, but this is just a step on the road of retribution for Authors of Pain. Rezar said that this is their time and Akam said war is their peace.

Authors of Pain are looking ready on winning the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic again this year. Let’s see if they can win it again. Good backstage promo here.

The WWE.com exclusive earlier in the week between William Regal, Johnny Gargano, and Drake Wuertz was good. William Regal told Johnny Gargano that after he’s done with his commitments to NXT, he’s officially done with NXT as William Regal gave the contract to Johnny Gargano. Before Johnny Gargano signed it, Drake Wuertz told Johnny Gargano and William Regal that he’s sorry for what he has done as he shook hands with Johnny Gargano. Johnny Gargano then signed the contract and then left.

Man, poor Johnny Gargano. I’m really going to miss him in NXT. Hopefully, he’ll come back one day because I expect him to come back to finish his feud with Tommaso Ciampa. However, if he’s really going to be on the main roster soon, then I wish Johnny Gargano the best of luck. Also, nice to see Drake Wuertz to talk and get some exposure in a way so that’s cool. Thank you, Johnny Gargano!

Cezar Bononi Vs. Adam Cole was a good match. As the match was about to start, Adam Cole grabbed a mic and told Cezar Bononi that he wants to acknowledge him for being Future Star of the Year. However, he then said that there’s only one future star in NXT and that is in the Undisputed Era.

Bobby Fish then handed Cezar Bononi an Undisputed Era T-shirt as Cezar Bononi was about to wear it, Adam Cole attacked him from the side to get the match started. Man, what a cheap tactic from Adam Cole as I questioned whether or not Cezar Bononi would actually join Undisputed Era or not. I guess we’ll never know. Anyway, back to the match itself.

Despite Adam Cole getting the upper hand on Cezar Bononi managed to fight back as he hit a nice Michinoku Driver II on Adam Cole. Adam Cole used the numbers advantage on Cezar Bononi as Undisputed Era was distracting the referee as Adam Cole hit a lethal superkick on Cezar Bononi. Good work by both men here.

The ending of the match came when Adam Cole hit Cezar Bononi with a shining wizard to the back of his head for the pin and win. A good win for Adam Cole as he and the rest of Undisputed Era are looking to make their mark in NXT. Adam Cole Bay Bay!

Good match and I’m interested to see what’s next for Adam Cole in NXT and see if Cezar Bononi will fight back against Undisputed Era or not.

We then get a video package hyping up Kairi Sane Vs. Shayna Baszler coming up next. Nice to see NXT building this match up as this match should be great. Looking forward to it.

The WWE.com exclusive from the Street Profits earlier in the show was good. Montez Ford was talking to Angelo Dawkins on how they should interview people on who will win this year’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic where Angelo Dawkins agreed with him. Angelo Dawkins then interviewed Montez Ford who played Pete from Alabama who said that he thinks Street Profits will win this year’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.

Montez Ford then interviewed Angelo Dawkins who played Darnell Washington as he answered that Street Profits will win this year’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. Montez Ford then looked into the camera and said that there’s only one answer on who’s winning this year’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic and it’s the Street Profits.

That was an entertaining segment of the Street Profits as they’re looking very confident heading into the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. Looking forward to it next week. They conquer!

We then get an announcement that next week, it will be TM-61 Vs. Authors of Pain in the first-round of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. The finals of the 2016 Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic is happening next week which should be good to watch. Looking forward to that match.

Kairi Sane Vs. Shayna Baszler was a great women’s match. With these two having a history with each other, this was a great match that showcased both women well.

Kairi Sane did great in this match as she tried to get revenge on Shayna Baszler on what she did to her the past few months. Her spear, sliding forearm smash to the corner, and diving forearm smash on Shayna Baszler were well executed. Shayna Baszler did great in this match as well as she wants to deliver more pain in the ring. Her strikes on Kairi Sane looked lethal. Great work by both women here.

The ending of the match came when Shayna Baszler hit the Kirifuda Driver (Vertical suplex into a rear-naked choke) on Kairi Sane to make Kairi Sane tap for the win. A good win for Shayna Baszler as she looks to get the NXT Women’s Championship.

After the match, Shayna Baszler left the ring and went to the announce table and told the announce team that Ember Moon is a coward for not showing up and confront her. She then said that the next time she faces Ember Moon, she will either get her championship or break limb as she left.

Shayna Baszler is looking to end Ember Moon’s career the next time she sees her. I don’t know if Ember Moon wants to face Shayna Baszler again or not, but it’s up to her to decide. Either way, Shayna Baszler is hungry. Queen of Spades!

Great women’s match and I’m interested to see if Ember Moon will face Shayna Baszler again for the NXT Women’s Championship.

The in-ring segment between Andrade “Cien” Almas, Zelina Vega, Aleister Black, and Killian Dain was great. Andrade “Cien” Almas and Zelina Vega came out to the ring as Zelina Vega introduced Andrade “Cien” Almas as she called him Mr. 4-0 as he did a clean sweep on Johnny Gargano. Despite that, Zelina Vega said that she doesn’t feed off of Andrade “Cien” Almas’ success as she created it.

Andrade “Cien” Almas then laughed about Johnny Gargano’s loss before saying that everyone in NXT is a loser just like him as Johnny Wrestling became Johnny Jobless. Zelina Vega then asked Andrade “Cien” Almas on what they can call him as he said NXT Champion.

Andrade “Cien” Almas and Zelina Vega then went up the stage as Aleister Black came out and entered the ring as he stared at Andrade “Cien” Almas who was on the stage. Before Aleister Black was about to speak, Killian Dain came out and entered the ring as he stared at Aleister Black and yelled at him for being in his way as the two began to brawl. Aleister Black was about to hit Killian Dain with Black Mass (Spin kick), but Killian Dain dodged it and hit a running crossbody on Aleister Black as he stood tall over him afterward.

Man, both Aleister Black and Killian Dain want Andrade “Cien” Almas for the NXT Championship, but only one man can do it and we’ll probably get a #1 Contender’s match between them down the line. Looking forward to that match when the time comes, it should be fun.

Great in-ring segment as I’m looking forward to the potential match between Aleister Black and Killian Dain.

Overall, a great show that is building up characters, storylines, and feuds for the near future. Next week, we will get TM-61 Vs. Authors of Pain in the first-round of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic which should be interesting to see. Looking forward to it. NXT! NXT! NXT!
