Lucha Underground 5/18/16 Review: The Gift of the Guerrero and The Machine

Published

on

Hello everyone, this is Vaude Influence.

This will probably be my last review of Lucha Underground for a while as I am coming back to watch Lucha Underground live this week.

Also, sorry for the delay since I have finals last week. Anyway, enough about that, let’s get onto the review.

Lucha Underground on May 18, 2016 was a good show that is building feuds and storylines for the future as well as building up new characters which is good. Let’s break it down:

We start off the show with a recap of what happened between Dario Cueto, the participants in the Gift of the Gods Championship match, Chavo Guerrero, Pentagon Jr., Matanza, and Vampiro earlier in the season of Lucha Underground Season 2. This is a good way to remind people about what happened during that time in case they missed it or forgot about it as this week, the people from the recap appeared on the show. Well done and well produced.

The backstage segment between Dario Cueto and Cage was great. Dario Cueto is shown in his office loading some cash into a satchel until Cage arrives. Cage is pissed off that Chavo Guerrero stole his Gift of the Gods Aztec Medallion, and Dario Cueto says that if Chavo Guerrero puts the medallion into the title, he gets into the match so he warns Cage that he better get it back before Chavo Guerrero puts the medallion into the title. Dario Cueto then invites Cage to head to the ring with him for the title ceremony in which Cage accepts.

Wow, once again, Dario Cueto shows the nice side of his. However, having someone to put the medallion into the title without earning a medallion is messed up. If that’s the case, everyone in Lucha Underground should try to steal a medallion so they don’t have to do a lot of work for it.

Anyway, this was a great segment showing the awesome character that is Dario Cueto and showing how pissed off Cage is for Chavo Guerrero stealing his medallion from him. It will be very interesting to see what Chavo Guerrero can do in order to put the medallion into the title with Cage in the way. Great backstage segment here.

The Gift of the Gods Championship Ceremony was good. All the participants in the Gift of the Gods Championship match put their medallions into the title including Texano, Joey Ryan, Siniestro de la Muerte, Aero Star, The Mack, and Sexy Star. Dario Cueto did the announcing for all the participants in the Gift of the Gods Championship match.

Cage then awaited Chavo Guerrero to arrive so he can take his medallion back. Chavo Guerrero arrived with a bag with the medallion inside and a steel chair where Dario Cueto exited the ring to let those two fight it out. Cage beat Chavo Guerrero down and took the bag, but instead of a medallion, it was a washer. Chavo Guerrero then beat down Cage with a steel chair and placed the medallion into the title as Dario Cueto announced that Chavo Guerrero will be in the Gift of the Gods Championship match. This upsets Cage as he took out Chavo Guerrero with a Weapon X (Gory Special into a Reverse STO) as he stood tall over Chavo Guerrero at the end of the segment.

Wow, I just have to say that I love the announcing of Dario Cueto. He made everyone feel special in a different way and that made it awesome. Also, Chavo Guerrero is such a genius with him having a decoy with the washer so he could take down Cage to put the medallion into the title. Very clever if I do say so myself. However, Chavo Guerrero paid the price with Cage beating the living daylights out of him.

As a result, the Gift of the Gods Championship match will be Texano Vs. Joey Ryan Vs. Siniestro de la Muerte Vs. Aero Star Vs. The Mack Vs. Sexy Star Vs. Chavo Guerrero. Looks to be pretty good if I do say so myself. However, I prefer to have Cage in this match rather than Chavo Guerrero, but that’s just me. Despite that, I think Cage will be involved in the match somehow and it should be interesting to see.

Good ceremony here and can’t wait to see the Gift of the Gods Championship match later on the show.

Mascarita Sagrada Vs. Argenis Vs. Kobra Moon Vs. Daga was a good four way match. Before the match happened, Famous B did the introduction for Mascarita Sagrada which was awesome. Also, come on people! What are you waiting for?! If you want to be famous, call Famous B! Call 423-GET-FAME! It’s 423-GET-FAME! Call now so you can be famous!

Anyway, my love for Famous B aside, this was a good match. Though, it was random at first when I first saw this match as I wonder how this match started to begin with, but as times goes on, I understand why they made this match so they could make a storyline out of it. We’ll get to that in just a bit.

Everyone in this match did well here especially Daga who was the star of this match. Throughout the match, there was an interaction between Daga and Kobra Moon as Kobra Moon has a love interest for Daga where she beat up Mascarita Sagrada for him and let Daga get the pin and win. Daga then becomes disgusted by it as he leaves with Kobra Moon staring at him in the end.

So we’re going to get a storyline with Daga and Kobra Moon, huh? I’m down with it as both need a storyline and feud right now so I’m perfectly fine with it. I have no idea where this storyline will go, but I am willing to give it a chance to see where this goes. Should be an interesting storyline for both Daga and Kobra Moon.

Good four way match and I’m intrigued where this storyline with Daga and Kobra Moon goes from here.

The backstage segment between Killshot and Marty Martinez was great. Killshot is getting ready for his match until Marty Martinez appears. This leads to both men fighting each other with Killshot coming out on top. Once Killshot leaves, Marty Martinez begins to laugh like a maniac.

Wow, Marty Martinez is creepy as heck. Every time you think you got rid of him, he just keeps coming back to haunt you more and that is creepy. I’m really liking this Marty Martinez character as it’s something very different in Lucha Underground. A feud between Killshot and Marty Martinez should be interesting to see if it happens, but we’ll get into that with the next match. Great backstage segment here.

Killshot Vs. Marty Martinez was a great match. Once again, Marty Martinez creeps out Melissa Santos. Melissa Santos, I suggest you get out of the ring once Marty Martinez appears or else he’ll keep creeping you out nonstop. Just saying Melissa Santos.

As for the match itself, it was great. It was very back and forth with Marty Martinez playing the dominant heel role very well and Killshot playing that underdog babyface role very well too. There were points in the match where I thought Marty Martinez was going to win, but Killshot managed to fight back with everything he has despite the punishment he got from Marty Martinez in this match. In the end, Killshot gets the win on Marty Martinez with a Storm Cradle Driver.

After the match, Marty Martinez attacked Killshot from behind and beat him down. Marty Martinez then stole Killshot’s dog tags and hit Killshot with a diving stomp to the back of his head as he stood tall over Killshot.

Wow, Marty Martinez is not only very creepy, but very disrespectful as well. You do not mess with someone’s dog tags especially if they’re from the military. Marty Martinez made a huge mistake for doing this and he will pay the price.

I really enjoy the post-match segment because even though Killshot won the match, Marty Martinez managed to get his heat back by totally destroying Killshot and stealing something very precious to him which are the dog tags. I think this feud between Killshot and Marty Martinez will be very good and can’t wait to see what happens next in this feud.

Great match and I can’t wait to see what happens next with the Killshot Vs. Marty Martinez feud.

Sexy Star Vs. The Mack Vs. Aero Star Vs. Texano Vs. Joey Ryan Vs. Siniestro de la Muerte Vs. Chavo Guerrero for the Gift of the Gods Championship was an excellent match. Mark out moment! This match had a lot going on with so many people in it, but it was a lot of fun as everyone in the match managed to shine.

Though, the only complaint I have about this match is that I wish it would go on longer than it did as the match only went about eight minutes. A fifteen minute match between these seven would be even better, but with the time it got, it was still excellent so it didn’t bother me too much. I also like the part where everyone in the match expect Joey Ryan attack Chavo Guerrero and everyone hit their finishers on him. That was awesome and he deserved that after what he did earlier in the show.

Near the end of the match, Cage arrives to the ring and attacks nearly everyone in the match as he tosses them all out of the ring expect Joey Ryan and Chavo Guerrero. He then hits Joey Ryan with a vertical suplex piledriver and put Chavo Guerrero on top of Joey Ryan to get the pin and win the Gift of the Gods Championship.

After the match, Cage got on the mic and congratulates Chavo Guerrero for becoming the new Gift of the Gods Champion. However, he announces that Dario Cueto is making Chavo Guerrero to defend the Gift of the Gods Championship next week against him, “The Machine” Cage.

Wow, Lucha Underground really swerved us with this match and post-match segment. At first, when Cage came out to the ring, I thought he would beat up Chavo Guerrero to let someone else win the title, but ended up taking out everyone else to let Chavo Guerrero to win the title. After that, I thought Cage would aligned himself with Chavo Guerrero, but ended up doing all of that just to face Chavo Guerrero next week for the title. I have to say, that was very clever writing right there from Lucha Underground so big props to them for giving us unexpected swerves like that. That was very cool to be quite honest so good job Lucha Underground.

So next week, we’re going to have Chavo Guerrero Vs. Cage for the Lucha Underground Gift of the Gods Championship. Well, all I have to say is rest in peace Chavo Guerrero as you’re going to get destroyed by “The Machine” Cage! He’s not a man, he’s a machine!

Excellent match and great post-match segment as I’m interested to see how Chavo Guerrero Vs. Cage will turn out next week.

The video segment with Vampiro and Pentagon Jr. was great. Vampiro is torturing Pentagon Jr. as he notes that the monster broke him and that he must break Pentagon Jr. again to make Pentagon Jr. great again. Pentagon Jr. is shown in a torture swing as Vampiro beats up Pentagon Jr. with a kendo stick as he calls him weak. He then tells Pentagon Jr. that what he’s doing to him is nothing compared to what Matanza did to him. Vampiro then grabs a barbed wire baseball bat and is about to hit Pentagon Jr. with it as the show ends.

Wow, Vampiro is a very vicious master. I do not want him as my master beating me up for failing him. It seems like Vampiro is trying to make Pentagon Jr. great again, but I don’t know how much Pentagon Jr. can take from the punishment. Also, I have a feeling that Pentagon Jr. might be dead or knocked out with that barbed wire baseball bat. That is not good at all. However, I am intrigued to see where this goes and hope to see Pentagon Jr. back in The Temple sooner rather than later. Great video segment to end the show.

Overall, good show that helps build up storylines and feuds in the future as well as building up new characters. So many storylines and feuds here and I love it! Next week, we’re going to have Chavo Guerrero Vs. Cage for the Gift of the Gods Championship which should be interesting to see. Looking forward to that. If you haven’t already, please check out Lucha Underground. It’s a great alternative to the mainstream wrestling and you won’t be disappointed. Looking forward to next week’s show. Lucha! Lucha! Lucha! Lucha!
