NXT 7/11/18 Review: Friends or Championships?

on

NXT on July 11, 2018, was a great show that is building up characters, storylines, and feuds in the near future. Let’s break it down:

We start off the show with a video package hyping up the NXT Tag Team Championship match between Moustache Mountain and Undisputed Era. This is good as it’s hyping up the main event of the show which should be great. Well produced video package here.

Danny Burch Vs. Adam Cole was a great match. This match was made last week when Danny Burch challenged Adam Cole which he accept and it was great.

Danny Burch did great in this match as he tried to get a victory over the NXT North American Champion. His headbutt to Adam Cole looked devastating. His rope hung cutter on Adam Cole was well executed. Adam Cole did great in this match as well as he showed why he is the NXT North American Champion. His superkick on Danny Burch looked like it made Danny Burch unconscious for a moment there. Great work by both men here.

The ending of the match came when Adam Cole hit Danny Burch with The Last Shot (Running single leg high knee) to the back of Danny Burch’s head for the pin and win. A good win for Adam Cole as he got a win for Undisputed Era. Adam Cole Bay Bay!

Great match and I’m interested to see where Danny Burch and Adam Cole will go from here.

The segment between Candice LeRae and Shayna Baszler outside of Full Sail University was good. Candice LeRae was walking outside of Full Sail University as she talked about how the NXT Women’s division is heating up.

She was about to continue until she saw Shayna Baszler as she told her that she heard what she said to her as Shayna Baszler told her to go back to being a little cute sidekick which led to Candice LeRae slapping Shayna Baszler in the face. Shayna Baszler then responded back by pushing her as the two began to brawl before producers and trainers tried to separate them.

It seems like they’re teasing tension between Candice LeRae and Shayna Baszler which is nice to see as more feuds in the NXT Women’s division is great. I wonder if Candice LeRae will be the next #1 Contender for the NXT Women’s Championship. Only time will tell. Good segment here.

The backstage segment between Dakota Kai and Lacey Evans by Cathy Kelley was good. Cathy Kelley asked Dakota Kai on how she feels on what Shayna Baszler said about the NXT Women’s division as Dakota Kai responded by saying that she heard what Shayna Baszler said and despite that, she will see Shayna Baszler and she will get her hands on the NXT Women’s Championship.

Before Dakota Kai could continue, Lacey Evans came in and told her that nobody cares. She told Dakota Kai if she won the NXT Women’s Championship, it would bring the title down as the title is more suited to a lady like her. Dakota Kai then told Lacey Evans that she’ll make sure to kick that class off her face as she challenged her to a match next week as she left with Lacey Evans grinning.

It seems like we got ourselves another feud in the NXT Women’s division even if it’s short-term. The match between Dakota Kai and Lacey Evans next week should be good. Good backstage interview here.

Kairi Sane Vs. Vanessa Borne was a good women’s match. This match was made last week when Kairi Sane accepted the challenge from Vanessa Borne and it was .

Vanessa Borne did well in this match as she was trying to make a statement on Kairi Sane. The way she threw Kairi Sane down from the top rope looked painful as heck. Kairi Sane did well in this match too as she tried to teach a lesson to Vanessa Borne about respect. Her sliding forearm smash to the corner on Vanessa Borne was well executed. Good work by both women here.

The ending of the match came when Kairi Sane locked Vanessa Borne in The Anchor (Bridging cross-legged Boston Crab) to make her submit for the win. A good win for Kairi Sane as she continues to get wins as of late.

After the match, Kairi Sane grabbed a mic and cut a promo by talking about how she had faced Shayna Baszler before and she beat her as she’s looking to do it again. She then said that she’s coming for her treasure and that treasure is the NXT Women’s Championship.

Kairi Sane has her eyes set on the NXT Women’s Championship as she looks to be the next #1 Contender for the NXT Women’s Championship. We’ll see if Kairi Sane can accomplish that. Bon Voyage!

Good women’s match and good post-match promo as I’m interested to see if Kairi Sane will get a shot at the NXT Women’s Championship.

We then get an announcement that next week, it will be Kairi Sane Vs. Candice LeRae Vs. Nikki Cross Vs. Bianca Belair in a #1 Contender’s match for the NXT Women’s Championship and in two weeks, it will be Aleister Black Vs. Tommaso Ciampa for the NXT Championship. Sounds like great matches coming up in the next two weeks so I’m looking forward to it.

The segment between Aleister Black, Johnny Gargano, and Tommaso Ciampa outside of Full Sail University was good. Aleister Black was walking outside of Full Sail University as he talked about how Tommaso Ciampa is an interesting individual and he never faced an opponent like him before.

Before he could continue, Johnny Gargano stood in his way as he told Aleister Black that Tommaso Ciampa can’t be NXT Champion as Aleister Black said that he agrees as he left, but Johnny Gargano stopped him and told him that he really meant that Tommaso Ciampa shouldn’t be NXT Champion no matter what. Aleister Black told Johnny Gargano that he understands as he will handle him on his own as Johnny Gargano told Aleister Black that he doesn’t know what he’s getting into to as he left.

Aleister Black then entered the arena, but was attacked by Tommaso Ciampa from behind as he grabbed Aleister Black on top of a table as he hit a DDT from the table to the floor as he left while waving at Aleister Black as referees checked on him.

Dang, what an assault from Tommaso Ciampa there as he got the better of Aleister Black. We’ll see if Aleister Black can recover in two weeks and if Johnny Gargano will get involved in the NXT Championship match. Good segment here.

Moustache Mountain Vs. Undisputed Era for the NXT Tag Team Championships was excellent. Mark out moment! These two teams went out there and delivered another excellent match where these two teams continue to deliver inside the ring.

Moustache Mountain did excellent in this match as they tried to show that their win in the WWE United Kingdom Championship Tournament wasn’t a fluke. The airplane spin and giant swing on Undisputed Era by Tyler Bate was very impressive.

Undisputed Era did excellent in this match too as they tried to regain the NXT Tag Team Championships. The straight jacket Elevated Boston Crab from Roderick Strong on Trent Seven looked painful as heck.

There were several points in this match where I thought it was over as I thought the match could go either way between both teams. There was a spot where Tyler Bate hit the Tyler Driver ’97 (Double underhook sitout powerbomb) on Roderick Strong, but Kyle O’Reilly breaks up the pin. Wow, I really thought it was over there. There was another spot where Trent Seven hit the Seven Stars (Wrist-lock into a short-arm lariat) on Roderick Strong, but Roderick Strong managed to kick out. Dang, I thought the match was over at that point. Finally, there was a time where I though Trent Seven was going to tap out to the heel hook from Kyle O’Reilly, but Trent Seven managed to grab the ropes to break the submission. Man, what resilience from Trent Seven. Excellent work from both teams here.

The ending of the match came when Kyle O’Reilly locked in the double kneebar on Trent Seven, but Trent Seven refused to submit despite being in so much pain. Tyler Bate was about to throw in the towel for Trent Seven, but Trent Seven refused. However, in the end, Tyler Bate seen enough and threw in the towel for Trent Seven as they lost the match by submission and Undisputed Era became the new NXT Tag Team Champions. I’m not a fan of championships being a hot potato so I was kind of disappointed that Moustache Mountain lost the NXT Tag Team Championships here. However, both teams gave it their all so I can’t complain too much.

After the match, Undisputed Era celebrated on the ramp as they were joined by Adam Cole and Bobby Fish while Tyler Bate checked on Trent Seven as well as referees and medical staff. Tyler Bate was willing to give up the NXT Tag Team Championships in order to save his best friend and mentor from getting his leg broken that could end his wrestling career. That’s true friendship right there. Even though they lost the championships, they looked excellent in defeat and they will probably get a rematch for the championships eventually. As for Undisputed Era, congratulations to them for being the second tag team to be 2x NXT Tag Team Champions along with The Revival.

Excellent tag team match and congratulations to Undisputed Era for being 2x NXT Tag Team Champions.

Overall, a great show that is building up characters, storylines, and feuds for the near future. Next week, we will have Kairi Sane Vs. Candice LeRae Vs. Nikki Cross Vs. Bianca Belair in a #1 Contender’s match for the NXT Women’s Championship which should be interesting to see. Looking forward to it. NXT! NXT! NXT!
