Published

on

The Mae Young Classic on September 5, 2018, was a great show. Mae Young Classic will showcase 32 women’s wrestlers from around the world compete in a single elimination tournament in order to become the best women’s wrestler in the world. Let’s break it down:

We start off the show with a video package showing highlights of the first Mae Young Classic as well as hyping up the second Mae Young Classic. This is good as it shows what happened in the first Mae Young Classic and if you haven’t already, go check it out, and hyping up the second Mae Young Classic which should be great. Well produced video package here.

Now, before I talk about the show itself, I have to talk about the presentation for this show. The presentation of this show is fantastic. The presentation for this show is fantastic just like last year as it feels very different from you what you have seen on WWE Raw, WWE Smackdown, and even NXT and 205 Live in that matter. Just like last year, I like how all of the women in the tournament are being featured in the intro of the show which is nice to see.

The commentary team for this show consists of Michael Cole, Beth Phoenix, and Renee Young. Mark out moment for all three! Not a bad commentary team here where even though people hate Michael Cole, when they just let him do his job without Vince McMahon in his ear, he can do a great job, Beth Phoenix is one of the best women’s wrestlers ever, and Renee Young is the first-ever full-time women’s commentary in WWE. The chemistry they have was pretty good and a lot better than last years with Jim Ross and Lita in my opinion. Good commentary team.

Also, the graphics of the show is the same as last year’s as it looks like SHIMMER’s graphics which was cool to see. Plus, I love how before each match, a promo package was given for every wrestler to talk about who they are and so forth which is nice as some people may not know about these guys so that is great as they did it last year. Plus, the ring looks awesome like last year’s as it reminds me of a Shine ring. Nice touch there as I hope that a relationship with SHIMMER and Shine is in the works. Great presentation for the show overall. Before we get to the matches, we need to talk about the wrestlers who are in the tournament.

We then get a vignette about Zatara and it was good. Zatara talked about how she is the first ever women’s wrestler from Chile to compete in WWE and she felt honored about it. She then talked about how she will represent the Chilean lucha libre and that people will know Zatara is at the end of the tournament.

Zatara is known for her work in Revolucion Lucha Libre, MAX Lucha Libre, and 5-Luchas Candestino as she is one of the rising luchadoras in wrestling today. Don’t really know much about Zatara, but I’m interested to see what she can do inside that ring.

We then get a vignette about Tegan Nox and it was good. Tegan Nox talked about how she kicks hard and she’s a high-flyer inside the ring. She then said that her inspiration comes from Molly Holly as she does things that no one can else do and she based her in-ring style from Molly Holly. She then mentioned that she was supposed to be in the Mae Young Classic last year, but due to an injury, she has to be left out. However, she’s in it this year and plans to win it all.

Tegan Nox is known for her work in SWE, FCP, ATTACK!, and PROGRESS as Nixon Newell as she is one of the rising stars in the UK wrestling scene today. Mark out moment for Tegan Nox being in the Mae Young Classic! Great to see her in this tournament as I think she’s going to go far as well as possibly winning the whole thing.

Tegan Nox Vs. Zatara was a good match. Before the match, both women shook hands. Just like last year, I really like when they do these handshakes as it could indicate whether the wrestler is a face or a heel and also shows their character as well so nice touch there.

This is the first time I see Zatara in action and from what I have seen from her, she got to showcase herself quite well as she showed her skills in the ring. Her running front dropkick on Tegan Nox’s knee looked painful as heck. Her running double knees to the corner on Tegan Nox looked devastating. Good work by Zatara here.

I have seen Tegan Nox’s work in FCP, ATTACK!, and PROGRESS before so I know what she’s capable of inside that ring as she got to show her striking and high-flying ability. Her kicks on Zatara looked vicious and her diving crossbody on Zatara was well executed. Good work by Tegan Nox here.

Tegan Nox wins this match with a shining wizard and after the match, the referee grabs both Tegan Nox’s and Zatara’s hand as he raises Tegan Nox’s hand and declares her the winner. It’s cool to see that they’re doing the same type of format like the CWC and UKCT with the ending there which I personally like so it’s good to see that they did it again here.

Good match and with that, Tegan Nox moves on to the second round of the Mae Young Classic.

We then see Ember Moon and Alexa Bliss in the crowd! Mark out moment for both! Nice to see them here as they’re looking at the future women of wrestling in this show which shows how important this event is so that’s cool.

We then get a vignette about Rhea Ripley and it was good. Rhea Ripley talked about in last year’s tournament, she made a fool out of herself and now she has trained harder than ever. She then said that she now has a darker side of her and will rip everyone apart.

Rhea Ripley competed in last year’s Mae Young Classic where she did well for herself. Mark out moment for Rhea Ripley for being in this year’s Mae Young Classic! Great to see her back in this tournament and we’ll see how she does this time around.

We then get a vignette about MJ Jenkins and it was good. MJ Jenkins talked about how she watched last year’s Mae Young Classic and she told herself that she’s going to be in it this year and she has. She then said that the world will know who MJ Jenkins is.

MJ Jenkins is well for her work in Impact Wrestling and Shine as she is a star on the rise. Mark out moment for MJ Jenkins for being in this year’s Mae Young Classic! Great to see her in this tournament and even though I don’t think it will win the tournament, I expect her to have a good showing.

MJ Jenkins Vs. Rhea Ripley was a great match. Before the match, MJ Jenkins extended her hand to Rhea Ripley and Rhea Ripley was about to shake it before she pulled her hand away. Nice to see a change of character from Rhea Ripley as it shows how much she has changed since last year.

We have seen Rhea Ripley in last year’s tournament and she did well for herself then and now, she’s a new person, but still works well in the ring. The way she countered MJ Jenkins’ springboard front missile dropkick into a dropkick of her own was well done. Great work by Rhea Ripley here.

I have seen MJ Jenkins’ work in Impact Wrestling and Shine so I know what she’s capable of inside that ring as she got to show her character and charisma. Her springboard missile dropkick on Rhea Ripley was well executed. Great work by MJ Jenkins here.

Rhea Ripley wins this match with a pumphandle sitdown powerbomb and after the match, the referee grabs both MJ Jenkins’ and Rhea Ripley’s hand as she raises Rhea Ripley’s hand and declares her the winner.

Great match and with that, Rhea Ripley moves on to the second round of the Mae Young Classic.

We then get a vignette of Vanessa Kraven and it was good. Vanessa Kraven talked about how she’s a monster on the outside, but in the inside, she’s a sweetheart until the bell rings as she become the monster that she is. She then said that her in-ring style is much of a bruiser and will show the world what Vanessa Kraven is all about.

Vanessa Kraven is known for her work in SHIMMER, Shine, and Smash as she’s a veteran of women’s wrestling. Mark out moment for Vanessa Kraven for being in this year’s Mae Young Classic! Even though I don’t think Vanessa Kraven will win this tournament, I expect her to do well.

We then get a vignette of Lacey Lane and it was good. Lacey Lane talked about how she wants to prove that women are just as great as the men as her in-ring style is a mix of lucha libre and strong style. She then said that she knows what it takes to be a champion as she was a former NBA player and she will show that in this tournament.

Lacey Lane is known for her work in The Crash as she’s one of the rising stars in women’s wrestling today. Mark out moment for Lacey Lane for being in this year’s Mae Young Classic! Even though I don’t think Lacey Lane will win this tournament, I expect her to have a great showcase for herself.

I have seen Lacey Lane’s work in The Crash so I know what she’s capable in the ring as she got to show her lucha libre and strong style in the ring. Her springboard arm drag on Vanessa Kraven which made her rolled to the outside was impressive despite botching there for a moment. Great work by Lacey Lane here.

Lacey Lane wins this match with a crucifix driver and after the match, the referee grabs both Lacey Lane’s and Vanessa Kraven’s hand as he raises Lacey Lane’s hand and declares her the winner.

Great match and with that, Lacey Lane moves on to the second round of the Mae Young Classic.

The backstage interview with Natalya by Shadia Bseiso was good. Natalya talked about how she’s happy to see the Mae Young Classic once again she’s glad to see all of these talents in this year’s tournament as it thrives everyone to do better. She then said that she has her eye on Mia Yim and Io Shirai as she wants them to win the tournament.

We then get a vignette of Meiko Satomura and it was good. Meiko Satomura talked about how she was only sixteen years old when wrestling in a match in WCW as she was a rookie back then as it inspired her to be the best women’s wrestler in the world. She then said that she’s in the tournament to show that she is the best women’s wrestler in the world.

Meiko Satomura is known for her work in Sendai Girls and she’s legend of Japanese women’s wrestling. Mark out moment for Meiko Satomura for being in this year’s Mae Young Classic! Even though I don’t think she’s going to win this tournament, I expect her to go far.

I have seen Meiko Satomura’s work in Sendai Girls so I know what she’s capable in the ring as she got to show her strong style in the ring. Her kick to the face of Killer Kelly looked devastating. Her double knees to the back of Killer Kelly’s head while performing a cartwheel looked like it killed Killer Kelly. Excellent work by Meiko Satomura here.
