Lucha Underground 6/22/16 Review: The Prince or El Rey?

on

Lucha Underground on June 22, 2016 was a good show that is building feuds and storylines for the future as well as building up new characters as Ultima Lucha Dos draws near. Let’s break it down:

We start off the show with a recap of what happened between Dario Cueto, Chavo Guerrero, Cage, Matanza, Famous B, Mascarita Sagrada, Joey Ryan, Dragon Azteca Jr., and Black Lotus earlier in the season of Lucha Underground Season 2. This is a good way to remind people about what happened during that time in case they missed it or forgot about it as this week, the people from the recap appeared on the show. Well done and well produced.

The backstage segment between Dario Cueto and Night Claw was good. Dario Cueto is in his office meeting with the new luchador, Night Claw as he gives Night Claw an Aztec medallion where he will make his debut in the Gift of the Gods Championship match at Ultima Lucha Dos.

Holy shoot! Night Claw, Flamita from AAA has made his debut for Lucha Underground! Mark out moment! For those who don’t know, Flamita is the former Fireball and Octagon Jr. in AAA and he’s one of the rising luchadors in AAA at the moment so seeing him in Lucha Underground is great. I did not expect him to change his mask and character and I’m all for it if it means he’s going to be a Marvel character with the name Night Claw which is awesome.

Night Claw’s character speaks with a voice distorter and he is a part of the jaguar tribe which is the same tribe Prince Puma is in. It will be interesting to see if he will feud with Prince Puma in Lucha Underground, but only time will tell. Either way, I can’t wait for Night Claw to make his Lucha Underground in-ring debut at Ultima Lucha Dos, it should be great. Good backstage segment here.

Mascarita Sagrada Vs. Daga in an Aztec Medallion match was fun. Famous B once again did his usual shtick introducing Mascarita Sagrada. Also, if you haven’t already, please call 423-GET-FAME so you can be famous!

This match was what you expected with a Mascarita Sagrada match in Lucha Underground with him getting some offense in this match, but Daga took control of the match trying to beat down Mascarita Sagrada.

During the match, once again, Kobra Moon appears on top of Dario Cueto’s office as she stares at Daga. However, her being there didn’t distract Daga much as he still managed to get the win on Mascarita Sagrada by making him submit to the crossface. With this win, Daga will be in the Gift of the Gods Championship match at Ultima Lucha Dos.

After the match, as usual, Famous B and Beautiful Brenda tend to Mascarita Sagrada to see if he’s okay or not. However, as they were checking on him to get Mascarita Sagrada back on his feet, Famous B hit a superkick on Mascarita Sagrada.

Famous B then said to Mascarita Sagrada that he embarrassed him as he beat him down with his shoe. Famous B then said he will look for a new client and he will be famous!

I like how in this match that they’re continuing two feuds at once with Daga and Kobra Moon as well as Famous B and Mascarita Sagrada. I still have no idea where the feud between Daga and Kobra Moon will go, but I’m willing to wait and see what happens with those two.

As for Famous B and Mascarita Sagrada, it was expected as the duo kept losing ever since they paired up with each other so it was about time they feud each other. Also, Mascarita Sagrada, how dare you fail Famous B! That’s what you get! He was trying to make you famous and you failed him! You got what you deserved. Jokes aside, this should be a good feud and I can’t wait to see the possibility of Famous B’s new client.

Fun match and good post-match as I’m interested to see where these two feuds go from here in Lucha Underground.

The backstage segment between Dragon Azteca Jr. and Dario Cueto was good. Dario Cueto meets with Dragon Azteca Jr. in his office as he tells Dragon Azteca Jr. that Matanza did not kill his parents as Dragon Azteca Jr. thinks that Dario Cueto is a liar.

Dario Cueto then explains to Dragon Azteca Jr. that Black Lotus is the one who owes him a debt and that she is the one that wants to take Dragon Azteca Jr. out. He then tells Dragon Azteca Jr. that at Ultima Lucha Dos, it will be Dragon Azteca Jr. Vs. Black Lotus. He then says to Dragon Azteca Jr. that he will see the true killer on that night and he will find vengeance.

Once again, Dario Cueto showing that he is an evil man. This is why Dario Cueto is such a great villain as he can manipulate and control people’s minds very well without noticing a thing. Dragon Azteca Jr. still doesn’t know the truth which makes Dario Cueto more evil as he’s planning to destroy Black Lotus for no reason whatsoever. Either way, I’m looking forward to Dragon Azteca Jr. Vs. Black Lotus at Ultima Lucha Dos, it should be good. Good backstage segment here.

The Cop Crew Vs. Killshot, Marty Martinez & Siniestro de la Muerte in a Six Man Aztec Medallion match was good. Haha! Yes! The Cop Crew is back together! We need more trios so I was very happy about them being back as they did have some chemistry with each other.

However, it seems like they’re already dis-functioning as there was a lot of miscommunication between the three of them. Hopefully, this is just a one time thing and they’ll still be a trio after this because we need more trios and the more trios, the better.

As always, the teaming in Lucha Underground has been very strange as once again, Dario Cueto made a random trio with Killshot, Marty Martinez, and Siniestro de la Muerte. Before the match, Marty Martinez got on the mic and told Killshot that they had to work together in order to win the Aztec medallions. He then gave Killshot back his dog tags in order to make peace.

Something is very fishy about this because even though Marty Martinez does have a point, that doesn’t mean something is odd about it. I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

Everyone in this match managed to get showcased well expect Siniestro de la Muerte who barley did anything in this match. The interaction with The Cop Crew was pretty fun and the interaction between Killshot and Marty Martinez was interesting as both men didn’t really like each other.

The ending came when Marty Martinez hit a curb stomp on Mr. Cisco and Killshot hitting a diving double foot stomp on Mr. Cisco to get the pin and win for his team. As a result, Killshot, Marty Martinez, and Siniestro de la Muerte are now in the Gift of the Gods Championship match with Night Claw and Daga. Looking good if I say so myself.

After the match, Marty Martinez stole Killshot’s dog tags after they received the Aztec medallions. Killshot went to chase after Marty Martinez, but Marty Martinez managed to escape.

I knew there was something fishy about Marty Martinez and I was right. Never trust Marty Martinez people. That’s a lesson for today. In all seriousness, this is a good way to continue the feud bewteen Killshot and Marty Martinez. Even though I prefer these two to have a singles match at Ultima Lucha Dos, with both being in the Gift of the Gods Championship, it’s acceptable as I expect that match to be very fun. Looking forward to that.

Good six man tag team match and I’m interested to see where the feud between The Cop Crew along with the Killshot Vs. Marty Martinez feud go from here.

Sexy Star and Mariposa Vs. Ivelisse and Taya in a Tag Team Aztec Medallion match was good. Once again, Dario Cueto with his unlikely pairings in Lucha Underground as bitter enemies become partners for this match.

The match between these four was good as all of them were showcased well here. As expected, the animosity between the two teams were too much for each other as they completely despise one another.

The ending of the match came when Ivelisse was fighting off Mariposa, but Taya accidentally hit Ivelisse with a spear. Mariposa then hit the Air Raid Crash (Over the shoulder back-to-belly piledriver) to get the pin and win for her team. As a result, Sexy Star and Mariposa will be moving on to the Gift of the Gods Championship match at Ultima Lucha Dos along with Night Claw, Daga, Killshot, Marty Martinez, and Siniestro de la Muerte. Looks to be another good Gift of the Gods Championship match, looking forward to it.

With Taya spearing Ivelisse, I expect these two to face each other at Ultima Lucha Dos. For some reason, I have a feeling that Ivelisse and Taya may be in a multi-man match at Ultima Lucha Dos, but either way, I’m expecting these two to face each other in some capacity. Looking forward to that match when it happens.

Good women’s tag team match and I’m looking forward to the Gift of the Gods Championship match at Ultima Lucha Dos as well as the possible Ivelisse Vs. Taya match at Ultima Lucha Dos.

The promo segment between Prince Puma and Rey Mysterio was great. Prince Puma is in the ring with a microphone in hand as he talks about Ultima Lucha Dos. He talks about how he wants only one match as Konnan always told him that he would be the best and possibly could be the next Rey Mysterio.

He then asks himself on whether he’s as good as Rey Mysterio or even better than him. He wants to know the answer as he challenges Rey Mysterio to a match at Ultima Lucha Dos.

Rey Mysterio then makes his way to the ring and talks to Prince Puma about how he was the one who made guys like Prince Puma to become a part of this business and that he has major respect for him. However, Rey Mysterio then tells Prince Puma that he’s a prince and he’s el rey(the king).

Rey Mysterio then questions himself if he still has what it takes to be the best and accepts Prince Puma’s challenge.

First of all, I like how Lucha Underground doesn’t do these promo segments a lot in the ring, but when they do them, it means something and this was a special case. I have to throw that out there because this was great and a lot of wrestling on TV these days do a lot of these promo segments in the ring so I’m looking at you WWE Raw.

Overall, this was a well done promo segment that managed to get its point across.

Also, oh my god, we’re going to get Prince Puma Vs. Rey Mysterio at Ultima Lucha Dos! Mark out moment! This can be considered as a dream match and it is because it’s Rey Mysterio Vs. Prince Puma (Ricochet), the best high-flyer in the past generation Vs. the best high-flyer in this generation, it’s gold right here. This should be an excellent match to see who is better than who. I’m looking forward this match as it should be incredible.

Great promo segment and I can’t wait for Prince Puma Vs. Rey Mysterio at Ultima Lucha Dos!

Overall, good show that helps build up storylines and feuds in the future as well as building up new characters as Ultima Lucha Dos draws near. So many storylines and feuds here and I love it! The road to Ultima Lucha Dos has begun and I can’t wait for that show, it should be great. If you haven’t already, please check out Lucha Underground. It’s a great alternative to the mainstream wrestling and you won’t be disappointed. Looking forward to next week’s show. Lucha! Lucha! Lucha! Lucha!
