NXT 6/22/16 Review: The King is Ready for The Icon of NXT

NXT on June 22, 2016 was a good show that is building up characters as well as possibly building new feuds and storylines in the near future. Let’s break it down:

We start off the show with a video package of what happened at NXT last week between Shinsuke Nakamura and Finn Balor. This was good as it shows what happened last week at NXT for those who have missed the segment or forgot about it. Good video package to start off the show.

Tye Dillinger Vs. Oney Lorcan was a good match. Holy shoot! Oney Lorcan (Biff Busick) made his return to NXT! Mark out moment! This return for Oney Lorcan seems to be his official debut since he got a new name. However, he did not get an entrance though which made me sad. Give him an entrance NXT!

The match itself was pretty good where Oney Lorcan managed to showcase his skills in the ring. Hope he gets the push down the line. Also, Tye Dillinger was over in this match as well as he got the crowd behind throughout the match. Each week as Tye Dillinger gets on NXT TV, he gets more over and the crowd gets behind him more. It’s only a matter of time when NXT turns him face so do it NXT!

The ending of the match came when Tye Dillinger was about to do the ten jabs to the corner on Oney Lorcan, but as he was hitting jabs at Oney Lorcan, the crowd were chanting at him which got him distracted. This led to Oney Lorcan taking the advantage of the opportunity and hit the running blockbuster onto Tye Dillinger for the pin and win. Wow! I did not see Oney Lorcan get that win at all as he didn’t even get an entrance so that was surprising to me.

After the match, we see Tye Dillinger looking disappointed after his loss as he is wondering to himself, what’s next for him. Man, Tye Dillinger just can’t get consecutive wins and it’s a shame because Tye Dillinger is a very underrated wrestler and it’s about time he should get pushed. Hopefully, Tye Dillinger will get his motive because “The Perfect Ten” needs a push in NXT! Ten!

Good match and can’t wait to see what’s next for Oney Lorcan and Tye Dillinger in NXT.

The backstage segment with Austin Aries and No Way Jose by Cathy Kelley was good. Cathy Kelley asks Austin Aries on what’s next for him after his loss against Shinsuke Nakamura. Austin Aries responds with that he is still “The Greatest Man That Ever Lived” and no matter what, he’s going after the NXT Championship.

No Way Jose then interrupts Austin Aries and tells Austin Aries that he should be more positive as No Way Jose leaves. Well it seems like No Way Jose is trying to get on Austin Aries’ good side. It will be interesting to see what NXT does with Austin Aries going forward and I guess we’ll find out soon enough. Good backstage interview here.

We then get a recap on what happened last month between Bayley and Nia Jax. After that, we then get footage of what happened earlier before the show started with Bayley being cleared to wrestle on this show. Awesome! Bayley is back in the ring on NXT! Can’t wait to see her wrestle later on this show, it should be great to see as we need some hugs from Bayley. Good content here.

No Way Jose Vs. Josh Woods was a good squash match. Josh Woods has been training in NXT and in the Performance Center for about a year now who is a former MMA fighter. The way he was showcased in this match was quite interesting. The man has a good look and he looks like a beast in that ring. However, he needs more training before getting featured more, but he showcased here in this match was interesting to see.

No Way Jose was being his usual positive self in that ring having fun and that’s great to see. No Way Jose!

After the match, Austin Aries came out to the ring with a mic in hand and talked to No Way Jose about victories and losses in wrestling. He then said that he won’t make any excuses for losing to Shinsuke Nakamura at NXT The End. He then told No Way Jose that he learned something from him and that is to have fun in NXT. Austin Aries then said thanks to No Way Jose as they shook hands and ended up dancing with each other in the ring, out of the ring, and to the commentators’ table.

While Austin Aries and No Way Jose were dancing on the top of the announce table, Austin Aries hit a discus forearm smash to No Way Jose and continued beating him up until he put on the Last Chancery on No Way Jose as referees came in as Austin Aries backed off.

Wow! Austin Aries just turned heel! That was awesome to see as Austin Aries does play a better heel than a face so this is good for Austin Aries. It seems like he’ll be feuding with No Way Jose next which I’m fine with since it will help No Way Jose get more over with the crowd and he’s going to work with a veteran like Austin Aries who is a great heel. Interested to see where this feud goes from here.

Good squash match and great post-match segment as I can’t wait to see what happens next in this No Way Jose Vs. Austin Aries feud.

The backstage segment between William Regal, Shinsuke Nakamura, and Buddy Murphy was good. William Regal is sitting with Shinsuke Nakamura in a conference room as they talk about Shinsuke Nakamura Vs. Finn Balor. William Regal then tells Shinsuke Nakamura that the match will happen in three weeks.

Buddy Murphy then barges in and tells William Regal that he wants a singles match and he should be treated as a top star in NXT. Shinsuke Nakamura then accepts Buddy Murphy’s challenge. Man Buddy Murphy, you made a big mistake here for going solo and not teaming with Blake anymore as you have to deal with Shinsuke Nakamura now. Either way, it should be a big test for Buddy Murphy to see how well he can do against Shinsuke Nakamura. As for Shinsuke Nakamura Vs. Finn Balor in three weeks, I’ll talk about that later in the review. Good backstage segment here.

Bayley Vs. Deonna Purrazzo was a solid women’s squash match. Deonna Purrazzo made another appearance on NXT! Mark out moment! NXT, just sign her already! Thank you.

However, Deonna Purrazzo didn’t get much offense in this match as Bayley got to dominate most of the match and gets the win over Deonna Purrazzo. It seems like Bayley is ready to get her rematch against Asuka for the NXT Women’s Championship. I’m looking forward to that match when the time comes. It should be excellent.

Solid women’s squash match and can’t wait to see Asuka Vs. Bayley II in the near future.

The backstage segment between Carmella and Alexa Bliss by Andrea D’Marco was good. Andrea D’Marco asks Carmella about her win last week and Carmella responds by saying that she wants to become NXT Women’s Champion and by doing that, you need to have wins.

Alexa Bliss then shows up and tells Carmella that without The Certified Gs, Carmella is a nobody. Carmella counters that statement by saying to Alexa Bliss that BAM Factor was a failure. Alexa Bliss defends herself by saying that she was the star of BAM Factor and made that team work. She then tells Carmella that she didn’t get pin in the triple threat match and that resulted with Carmella saying that if you have a problem with it, do something about it. That resulted in Alexa Bliss leaving.

It seems like we’ll be getting a feud between Carmella and Alexa Bliss with this segment as it should be good for both women as they’re looking to become NXT Women’s Champion in the future. Can’t wait to see how this feud will play out between the both of them. Good backstage segment here.

We then get a vignette of Samoa Joe about his reign as NXT Champion. This was a great vignette as it shows how dominant of a monster that Samoa Joe is. It will be very interesting to see who Samoa Joe will feud with next for the NXT Championship. Great vignette here.

We then get a recap of Asuka Vs. Nia Jax for the NXT Women’s Championship at NXT The End. This was good as it reminds everyone on what happened last week between Asuka and Nia Jax at NXT The End for those who have missed it or forgot about it. Also, it builds up Nia Jax’s match as we’re going to talk about that next.

We then get a vignette of The Authors of Pain and Paul Ellering in NXT. Not a lot in this vignette, but it shows how dominant The Authors of Pain are as a tag team. Will be interesting to see the destruction they will bring in NXT with Paul Ellering by their side.

It was announced that next week, American Alpha will be appearing on the show. It will be interesting to see how American Alpha will respond to The Authors of Pain and Paul Ellering with their attack on them at NXT The End. Also, they are ready…, willing…, and Gable!

Liv Morgan Vs. Nia Jax was a solid women’s squash match. It was cool to see Liv Morgan get some offense in this match even though she got dominated by Nia Jax throughout the whole match. Hope to see more of Liv Morgan in the near future.

Nia Jax was showing her dominant side in this match. I like her powerbomb finisher. It looks devastating and it’s a lot better than her leg drop finisher. Her leg drop should be her signature move going forward. It will be interesting to see where Nia Jax goes from here after her loss against Asuka. She’s not like most girls!

Solid women’s squash match and I’m interested to see where Nia Jax goes from here. Also, NXT, please give more time for Liv Morgan! Yo!

It was announced that next week, it’ll be Carmella Vs. Alexa Bliss. Makes sense since they confronted each other earlier in the show and it should be a good women’s match for both women so I’ll be looking forward to that next week. Now, let’s get onto the main event!

Shinsuke Nakamura Vs. Buddy Murphy was a good match for what it was. Buddy Murphy did well in this match for what he has given. However, it wasn’t enough as Shinsuke Nakamura was too excellent for Buddy Murphy to beat as Shinsuke Nakamura beats Buddy Murphy with the Kinshasa as he gets ready for his match against Finn Balor in three weeks.

Now, for the match being announced in three weeks, I’m very mixed on it. For one, I think it’s great as it will make the show in three weeks must see TV. On the other hand though, that match screams NXT live special match and should have been saved for NXT Back to Brooklyn. Regardless, it should be an excellent match and it will tear the house down so I’m looking forward to it. I just wished it was on NXT Back to Brooklyn instead of on NXT TV.

Good match for what it was and I’m ready for Shinsuke Nakamura Vs. Finn Balor in three weeks.

Overall, good show that is building up characters as well as possibly building new feuds and storylines in the near future. Next week, we’re going to see American Alpha and Carmella Vs. Alexa Bliss which should be interesting to see. Looking forward to it. NXT! NXT! NXT!
