FCW Sunshine: Sofia Cortez (Ivelisse)

Topic/Subject: Today, I will be showing a promo that involves a Puerto Rican wrestler.

Wrestler: “The Baddest B*tch on the Planet” Sofia Cortez (Ivelisse/Ivelisse Vélez).

Background Information: Sofia Cortez is from Ponce, Puerto Rico. She began her wrestling career at the age of fifteen in the island of Puerto Rico. Soon after, she debuted in World Wrestling Council (WWC). She subsequently wrestled in the International Wrestling Association (IWA).

After gaining experience, she began wrestling in the United States, starting on the Chicago independent circuit. She was eventually noticed by WWE and sent to Florida Championship Wrestling for further evaluation. She continued to work the indy scene in the U.S. before signing a contract with WWE.

In March 2011, she was announced as one of the fourteen contestants for the revival of Tough Enough. On May 10, 2011, she was eliminated from the competition due to an injury.

After being cut from Tough Enough, on November 11, 2011, she signed a contract with WWE. She made her debut under the name Sofia Cortez at a FCW house show in a 6-women tag team match, teaming with Cameron Lynn and Audrey Marie to defeat Caylee Turner, Leah West and Raquel Diaz.

She made her television debut on December 25, 2011, teaming with Caylee Turner to defeat Cameron Lynn and Kaitlyn.

On March 11, 2012, on an episode of FCW television, she formed an alliance with Paige and Raquel Diaz, with the trio attacking Audrey Marie. The following week on FCW television, she teamed up with Paige losing to Audrey Marie and Kaitlyn. She and Paige dubbed themselves the Anti Diva Army.

In 2012, as Sofia Cortez, debuted July 4, 2012, on an episode of the sixth season of WWE NXT taped at Full Sail University, where she defeated Paige.

On July 25, 2012, on an episode of NXT, she defeated Natalya by count-out, but suffered a post-match attack from Natalya.

In August 2012, she announced that she had been released from her WWE contract. In her final match in WWE, she reverted to her villainous persona in a loss to Tamina Snuka taped before her release.

On October 11, 2012, she had a tryout match for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) in a losing effort to Tara.

She returned to TNA on February 28, 2013, on an edition of Impact Wrestling; defeating Lei’D Tapa in a Gut Check Challenge match. Despite her victory, the Gut Check judges turned her down.

She took part of the Knockouts Knockdown PPV on September 6, 2013, in a losing effort to Tapa. She also took part in the World Cup of Wrestling PPV on December 6, 2013, as a villain representing the Aces & Eights in a victorious effort against Mickie James, who represented Team USA. In the 5-on-5 elimination match for the TNA World Cup, she was eliminated by James.

On November 17, 2012, she debuted for Shine Wrestling at SHINE 5 in a losing effort to Athena. After the match, she attacked Athena in the ring, establishing herself as a villainous character.

On January 11, 2013, she defeated Su Yung and later took part in forming the Valkyrie faction along with Allysin Kay, Taylor Made, April Hunter, and their leader Rain. Throughout her career in Shine Wrestling, she won the Shine Championship.

On April 5, 2014, she made her debut for SHIMMER Women Athletes at the SHIMMER 62 event in New Orleans; defeating Kimber Lee in singles action.

She debuted for Lucha Underground on November 5, 2014, simply as Ivelisse, teaming with Son of Havoc in a loss to Sexy Star and Chavo Guerrero Jr.

Throughout her Lucha Underground career, she became a 2x Lucha Underground Trios Champion. She still competes in Lucha Underground and the independent circuit to this day.

She played basketball and volleyball in high school. Before joining Tough Enough, she worked in Chicago as an assistant pet groomer.

My Thoughts: Sofia Cortez is a very talented individual. She has a great look, she has a great presence about her in and outside of the ring, she has a good character, good mic skills, and she’s an excellent wrestler. She is “The Baddest B*tch on the Planet”!

Video: This video contains a promo of Sofia Cortez in early 2012.

My Thoughts: This was a solid promo from Sofia Cortez here as she just signed with FCW during that time.

Sofia Cortez talks about how she was a participant of WWE Tough Enough and that she didn’t win the competition even though she thinks she should have of won it because she was talented than everyone else in that competition.

Despite that, she was still signed and she is here to show the world that she is the best in the world representing her home country, Puerto Rico.

During this promo, it feels like at times that she was forcing herself to act like a heel, but she managed to get her point across as she’s looking to be the best in FCW.

It’s really a shame that she got released because she is an excellent women’s wrestler. However, I do understand why WWE released her if it’s because of her attitude. Even if you’re the most talented individual in the world, having a bad attitude won’t get you anywhere so if that was the case, WWE may have a good reason to release her.

However, if it’s not because of her attitude and it was something else, then WWE has let go of a very talented women’s wrestler. Luckily, she’s going great things in Lucha Underground and in the independent circuit. So hopefully, as time goes on, people will see how Sofia Cortez is “The Baddest B*itch on the Planet”!

After watching the video, give me your thoughts on the video or the wrestler herself. Thank you.
