NXT 7/20/16 Review: Hugs Overcame Force

NXT on July 20, 2016 was a good show that is building up characters as well as possibly building new feuds and storylines in the near future. Let’s break it down:

We start off the show with a video package hyping up Rhyno Vs. Samoa Joe, American Alpha Vs. Authors of Pain, and Bayley Vs. Nia Jax later on the show. This is good as it helps build up the matches later on the show which should be good. Good video package here.

Rhyno Vs. Samoa Joe was a good match. This was Rhyno’s return match ever since he returned to NXT two weeks ago and both men went out and deliver a good big man match.

Samoa Joe dominated Rhyno throughout the whole match showing his strength and intensity he has inside that ring while Rhyno managed to show that he still has what it takes to take on the big guys and top guys in NXT.

In the end, Samoa Joe got the win by making Rhyno tap out to the Coquina Clutch. With the victory over Rhyno, Samoa Joe looks to be unstoppable at this point. However, there is possibly one man that can beat Samoa Joe for that NXT Championship and that man is Shinsuke Nakamura. Now, will we get a match between Samoa Joe and Shinsuke Nakamura for the NXT Championship? Only time will tell, but that will be the most logical choice for Samoa Joe’s next opponent for the NXT Championship.

Good match and I’m interested to see where Samoa Joe and Rhyno go from here in NXT.

The backstage interview with Asuka by Andrea D’Marco was good. Andrea D’Marco asks Asuka on who she rather face against for the NXT Women’s Championship, Bayley or Nia Jax. Asuka responds that she has fought both of them and she’ll fight both of them is she has to as she smiles at the end.

Loving that Asuka is willing to take on all challengers as she is a fighting champion. I’m guessing Bayley Vs. Nia Jax will determine on who will face Asuka for the NXT Women’s Championship in the near future which should be good and I can’t wait to see who will Asuka next for the NXT Women’s Championship. Good backstage interview here.

We then get a recap of what happened at Smackdown Live! where Finn Balor, American Alpha, Nia Jax, Alexa Bliss, Mojo Rawley, and Carmella were drafted to Raw and Smackdown from NXT. This is good as it shows what happened on Smackdown Live! for those who have missed it or forgot about it. Plus, we’ll probably see those men and women in NXT for the last time in the next few weeks so it’s going to hard, but I wish them all luck and I hope they have great success on Raw and Smackdown.

American Alpha Vs. Authors of Pain was a great tag team match. As American Alpha were making their way into the ring, Authors of Pain took them out from behind from the entrance ramp. Despite getting beat up, American Alpha decided to fight Authors of Pain and the match was underway.

American Alpha were very impressive in this match as they did suplexes among Authors of Pain which was impressive. However, I wish they sold their attack from earlier from the ramp, but other than that, they looked great in this match and they made Authors of Pain looked great as well.

Authors of Pain were dominant in this match as they have some very impressive tag team moves. These two men are monsters and they displayed that during this match. Impressive showing by Authors of Pain here.

The ending of the match came when Authors of Pain hit the Russian legsweep/clothesline combination on Chad Gable to get the pin and win. With this victory, Authors of Pain looked to be unstoppable as a tag team and this may be the last time we may see American Alpha in NXT. If so, thank you American Alpha for everything you guys have done in NXT and I wish you well on Smackdown. As for Authros of Pain, I can see them being #1 Contenders to the NXT Tag Team Championships in the near future, but only time will tell.

Great tag team match and I can’t wait to see what Authors of Pain do next in NXT. Also, thank you American Alpha!

The backstage segment with The Revival and Wrestling Killers by Cathy Kelley was good. Cathy Kelley asks The Revival on what’s next for them after beating American Alpha two weeks ago, they respond with that they destroyed the spirits of American Alpha and have beaten every tag team in NXT.

Wrestling Killers then show up and tell them that they beat them already once and that the only thing they need now is the NXT Tag Team Championships. They then tell The Revival that time is ticking as they leave.

So it seems like Wrestling Killers will get the next shot at the NXT Tag Team Championships against The Revival. It makes sense since Wrestling Killers did get a victory over The Revival in the past so it’s logical for them to be the next contenders for the titles. It should be a great tag team match once these two go at it again for the tag team championships. I’ll be looking forward to it when the time comes. Good backstage segment here.

We then get a vignette of Hideo Itami returning to NXT in two weeks. Oh my god! Hideo Itami is returning to NXT in two weeks! Mark out moment! Hideo Itami has been out of action since May of last year and now he’s going to return in two weeks! I can’t wait and it’s been so long. “The Rising Sun” will be here to shine once again!

Patrick Clark Vs. Austin Aries was a good match. Oh my god! Patrick Clark just made his NXT in-ring debut! Mark out moment! Patrick Clark has wrestled in MCW and competed in Tough Enough last year. He’s a young star that could be great in the future so it’s nice to see him on NXT TV.

Even though Patrick Clark did get some decent offense in this match, Austin Aries pretty dominated Patrick Clark throughout the entire match as he’s The Greatest Man That Ever Lived.

Austin Aries gets the win on Patrick Clark by making him tap out to the Last Chancery. Even when the match was over, Austin Aries still held on to the Last Chancery until a little while later. Great heel work by Austin Aries here as the crowd managed to boo him so that’s good.

After the match, No Way Jose came in and attacked Austin Aries as the two battled it outside the ring until Austin Aries ran away from No Way Jose into the crowd as No Way Jose looked pissed off.

Wow! No Way Jose is showing a serious side of himself and that’s great to see because that’s good character progression right there. It seems like this feud between No Way Jose and Austin Aries will continue which is fine by me as it could benefit both men in NXT. Looking forward to it when the time comes.

Good match and good post-match segment as I’m looking forward to see what’s next with the No Way Jose Vs. Austin Aries feud.

Bayley Vs. Nia Jax was a great women’s match. Both of these women went out there and delivered a great women’s match that told a great story.

Nia Jax showing her impressive strength and power in this match. She pretty much dominated Bayley throughout the whole match as she tried to take Bayley out once again like she did to her last time. Her suplex slam on Bayley was very cool to see from Nia Jax. Great performance by Nia Jax as this could be her final match in NXT.

Bayley was great in this match as well as she was playing the underdog babyface very well as she did everything she could in order to beat the monster that is Nia Jax. Bayley played her role greatly making herself looked great as well as her opponent.

The ending of the match came when Bayley hit a Belly-to-Bayley to Nia Jax from the second rope for the pin and win. Wow! Bayley just hit a Belly to Bayley onto Nia Jax from the second rope! Impressive.

I assume that this match will be the last match that Nia Jax will have in NXT and if that’s the case, then thank you Nia Jax for everything you have done in NXT and I wish you well on Raw.

With this win for Bayley, she has to be the next contender for the NXT Women’s Championship. I’m ready for Asuka Vs. Bayley II when it happens and it should be excellent. Looking forward to it.

Great women’s match and I can’t wait to see if Asuka and Bayley will once again face each other for the NXT Women’s Championship. Also, thank you Nia Jax!

Overall, good show that is building up characters as well as possibly building new feuds and storylines in the near future. The road to NXT Back to Brooklyn is coming and I can’t wait for that show to start, should be great. Looking forward to it. NXT! NXT! NXT!
