NXT Showcase: Bray Wyatt

Topic/Subject: Today, I will be showing a match that involves an eater of worlds.

Wrestler: “The Eater of Worlds” Bray Wyatt (Husky Harris/Duke Rotundo).

Background Information: Bray Wyatt is from Brooksville, Florida. He is trained by the FCW staff in 2009.

He debuted in FCW in April 2009 with a victory, using the name Alex Rotundo. He later changed his name to Duke Rotundo.

On June 23, 2009, he teamed up with his younger brother Bo and they defeated Justin Angel and Kris Logan to win the Florida Tag Team Championships. On November 19, 2009, at the FCW television tapings, they lost the championship to The Dudebusters (Curt Hawkins and Caylen Croft).

On June 1, 2010, he was announced as a competitor in the second season of WWE NXT under the name Husky Harris, with Cody Rhodes as his mentor.

He made his debut on NXT on June 8, 2010, competing in a tag team match with Rhodes against Montel Vontavious Porter and Percy Watson, which they lost.

After a rocky start with his pro Cody Rhodes, he turned heel on June 22, 2010, on an edition of NXT by attacking announcer Matt Striker, just as his pro did the previous week.

On August 9, 2010, the rookies appeared in a six-man tag team match on Raw, where his team won when he pinned Kaval, but his team lost a rematch the following night on NXT.

At the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view in October, a disguised Michael McGillicutty and him interfered in a match between John Cena and Wade Barrett, and helped Barrett win, forcing Cena to join Barrett’s faction the Nexus per the pre-match stipulation.

He and his McGillicutty’s identities were revealed on the following day’s episode of Raw, though Barrett claimed he had not asked for their help and refused to make them full-time members of The Nexus.

The following week, he and McGillicutty cost Cena a match against The Miz, prompting Barrett to give them the opportunity to win membership in the Nexus. On October 18, 2010, on episode of Raw, he and McGillicutty failed to earn a place in the Nexus when they lost to Cena and Randy Orton in a tag team match. Despite of their loss, he and McGillicutty were inducted into the Nexus on Raw the following week.

In January 2011, CM Punk took over the Nexus and had each of its members put through an initiation. He passed his initiation, a lashing from the rest of the group, and was allowed to remain a member of the New Nexus, alongside Punk, McGillicutty and David Otunga. Three weeks later, on January 31, 2011, on an episode of Raw, he and McGillicutty unsuccessfully challenged Santino Marella and Vladimir Kozlov for the WWE Tag Team Championships. After the match, Orton attacked them as revenge for costing him the WWE Championship, and punted him in the head, which was used to write him off television “indefinitely”.

Following the punt by Orton on Raw, he returned to FCW and debuted a new character in March 2011, that of the hockey mask-wearing Axel Mulligan, but the character never made it to FCW TV, and he continued to play the Husky Harris character on FCW TV.

In April 2012, he debuted a new character, Bray Wyatt, who initially associated himself with Eli Cottonwood while in FCW. When WWE rebranded FCW into NXT Wrestling, he debuted on the fourth episode of the rebooted WWE NXT, taped at Full Sail University, where he defeated Aiden English in a singles match.

He is portrayed as an evil cult leader who believes himself to be more monster than human. The character drew comparisons to Max Cady of the 1991 film Cape Fear and Waylon Mercy.

In July 2012, he suffered a torn pectoral muscle and required surgery. Despite the injury, he continued to appear on NXT by founding a faction known as The Wyatt Family in November, with Luke Harper as his first “son” and Erick Rowan as his second.

From May 27, 2013, on an episode of Raw, WWE aired vignettes promoting the upcoming debut of The Wyatt Family. The vignettes showed the Wyatt Family’s backwoods origins and Rowan wearing a lamb mask. On July 8, 2013, on an episode of Raw, The Wyatt Family made their debut by assaulting Kane.

After their feud with Kane, The Wyatt Family’s next feud began when they attacked Daniel Bryan and CM Punk in late October, leading to Bryan and Punk defeating Harper and Rowan at Survivor Series.

On January 27, 2014, on an episode of Raw, The Wyatt Family attacked Bryan, Cena, and Sheamus during an Elimination Chamber qualifying match against The Shield, thus awarding Bryan’s team the disqualification win and costing The Shield a chance to enter the Elimination Chamber match at the eponymous event. Therefore, a six-man tag team match was set up between The Shield and the Wyatt Family at the event.

In the weeks following Elimination Chamber, he continued to torment and antagonize John Cena (including saying that Cena’s heroic image was nothing more than a facade), to the point of interrupting his request to enter the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal to Hulk Hogan. Cena would then issue a challenge to Wyatt for a match at WrestleMania XXX, which was accepted.

Beginning from September 29, 2014, vignettes were shown of him “setting Luke Harper and Erick Rowan free”.

He returned alone at Hell in a Cell in October 2014, during the main event match between Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins. Just as Ambrose was about to defeat Rollins, the arena lights cut out and his lantern appeared in the middle of the ring, spraying out smoke and projecting an image of a ghostly specter while the sound of him reciting an incantation was heard. He emerged from the smoke and blindsided Ambrose who was then pinned by Rollins for the victory. After the match, he attacked Ambrose. In the following weeks, he would taunt Ambrose while offering to “fix” him like he had done with Harper and Rowan. He eventually defeated Ambrose at Survivor Series by means of disqualification after Ambrose used a steel chair to attack him.

He began a series of cryptic promos which led to Fast Lane, where he challenged The Undertaker to a match at WrestleMania 31, which Undertaker accepted on March 9, 2015, on an episode of Raw. On March 29, 2015, at WrestleMania XXXI, he was defeated by The Undertaker. Before the event, he suffered a sprained ankle, causing his match with The Undertaker to be worked with a slow pace.

He would air a series of vignettes in the coming weeks which would eventually turn into a feud with Roman Reigns. During the 2016 WWE Draft, he was drafted to Smackdown Live! and still competes in the WWE to this day.

He is a third generation professional wrestler; his grandfather Blackjack Mulligan, father Mike Rotunda and uncles Barry and Kendall Windham were all professional wrestlers.

My Thoughts: Bray Wyatt is a very talented individual. With his unique look, his presence in and outside of the ring, his excellent character, excellent charisma, and good in-ring ability, this man could have been a major star for WWE. He got the whole world in his hands!

Video: This video contains a match between Bray Wyatt and Chris Jericho on May 1, 2013.

My Thoughts: This was an excellent match as Bray Wyatt went up against a wrestling legend that is Chris Jericho and he put the fight into him. This all started in a backstage segment where Chris Jericho interrupted The Wyatt Family which led to this match between Chris Jericho and Bray Wyatt on NXT.

Before the match happened, Bray Wyatt cut a promo while making his entrance to the ring as he said that he is a hero that everyone is looking for and that he will break down the wall and beat Chris Jericho. I like how he said break down the wall in his promo which is the name of Chris Jericho’s theme which was awesome. Good promo from Bray Wyatt here.

Bray Wyatt was excellent in this match as he played his role well here as a heel trying to get the crowd booing him and making the crowd cheer Chris Jericho even though they were cheering for him anyway. His heel tactics were excellent here as he distracted the referee in order to have The Wyatt Family tried to interfere in the match and take out Chris Jericho. Excellent work there.

Not only that, he put up a fight against Chris Jericho as he dominated Chris Jericho most of the match. His clothesline and running crossbody onto Chris Jericho looked devastating. Excellent work by Bray Wyatt and excellent work by Chris Jericho making Bray Wyatt looking excellent in the process.

Even though Bray Wyatt lost the match, he took Chris Jericho to the limit here so he has nothing to be ashamed of. Not only that, this was the start of him slowly transitioning to the main roster. Excellent work by both men here especially Bray Wyatt.

It’s a shame that Bray Wyatt isn’t getting a fair shot in WWE as he started off hot in the beginning when he made his return to WWE in 2013, but once he feuded with John Cena and lost the feud, he never recovered as he slowly goes down and hasn’t been relevant since. It’s really unfortunate because this guy has all the tools that WWE wants in a main eventer with the unique look, the unique presence, the excellent character, the excellent charisma, and he’s a pretty good wrestler. Yet, it really pisses me off that he isn’t in the main event or a world champion right now because this man has all the tools that WWE likes and yet, he hasn’t.

They have damaged his character so much at this point that I don’t think he will ever recover and I have no one to blame expect Vince McMahon and the WWE creative for ruining such an excellent character that could have been great for WWE. Fudge you WWE! Thank you for ruining an excellent character that could have been a big star for your company! Fudge you!

As of right now, he’s on the Smackdown brand not doing much which again, pisses me off as he should be getting feuds, but yet he isn’t. I really hope that WWE push Bray Wyatt because like I said before, this man could be great for the company if used right so please WWE, this is your chance to redeem yourself. So please, push Bray Wyatt. If not, Bray Wyatt should just leave WWE and go to the independent circuit which is something that I don’t mind seeing.

WWE, you better push Bray Wyatt and if not, Bray Wyatt will take your soul and then he has the world in his hands! Follow the buzzards!

After watching the video, give me your thoughts on the video or the wrestler himself. Thank you.
