Lucha Underground 11/16/16 Review: A Star Was Born in Aztec Warfare III

Published

on

Lucha Underground on November 16, 2016 was an excellent show that was focusing on one match and it was excellent. Let’s break it down:

We start off the show with a backstage segment between Dario Cueto, Johnny Mundo, and Taya and it was great. Dario Cueto was heading to the Temple backstage until he bumped into Johnny Mundo. Dario Cueto told Johnny Mundo to move as he has to make his way to the ring for Aztec Warfare III. Johnny Mundo then told Dario Cueto that he’s going to win Aztec Warfare III as he will become the first person to hold the Gift of the Gods Championship and the Lucha Underground Championship at the same time.

Taya then came in as she was filming Johnny Mundo as Dario Cueto questioned Johnny Mundo about all of this and Johnny Mundo replied by saying that she’s going to make a documentary for him as told Dario Cueto to pay attention to him. Johnny Mundo then told Dario Cueto that if he doesn’t win Aztec Warfare III for some particular show, he will cash in his Gift of the Gods Championship for a shot at the Lucha Underground Championship next week. Dario Cueto then questioned Johnny Mundo about his decision, but Johnny Mundo still decided to go for it because he believed that he can do it.

Johnny Mundo then told Dario Cueto that at #12, he will beat everyone in Aztec Warfare III including his brother Matanza. Dario Cueto then told Johnny Mundo that he may be the best in the mundo, but he has no chance of winning Aztec Warfare III as he grabbed Johnny Mundo’s number, ripped the paper in half, and told Johnny Mundo that he would enter Aztec Warfare III at #2. He then toold Johnny Mundo as he was leaving that next week, he won’t be fighting against Matanza for the Lucha Underground Championship, instead, he’s going to fight for his life. Johnny Mundo then told Taya to turn off the camera to end the segment.

Dario Cueto is an evil man, but this is why we love him because he’s a great villain. Whether you’re a hero or a villain, you will get messed with by Dario Cueto because he is El Jefe! Johnny Mundo must be very confident in himself if he thinks he can win the Lucha Underground Championship. Either way, Johnny Mundo has a mountain to climb and he has to do it at #2. Can’t wait to talk about Aztec Warfare III which we will talk about next. Great backstage segment here.

Aztec Warfare III was an excellent match! Mark out moment! This show was basically around this match and this match was incredible. For those of you who don’t know the rules of Aztec Warfare, it’s similar to the Royal Rumble where there are 20 people in total where they are entered in one minute intervals. You start with #1 and #2 in the ring and to eliminate someone, you need to get a pin or a submission. Whoever the last person is standing is the winner. I’ll break down this match in terms of entrants and eliminations to make this review more organized so bear with me here. Anyway, let’s get started.

As Melissa Santos was about to announced the #2 entrant, Dario Cueto told Melissa Santos that Sexy Star was supposed to be entering at #2, but instead he told her that Johnny Mundo will enter #2. Again, I like how we know what happens in Lucha Underground more than the commentators because they didn’t know Dario Cueto made that decision backstage so that was cool. Now, let’s talk about the match!

Matanza Vs. Johnny Mundo started off Aztec Warfare III as Matanza was #1 and Johnny Mundo was #2. These two started off the match pretty well as Johnny Mundo tried to take down “The Monster” Matanza, but Matanza was too strong for him so they did their jobs well. A nice start to the match.

Entering at #3 was Son of Havoc. He did well in this match as he picked up the pace. Son of Havoc and Johnny Mundo tried to double team on Matanza since Matanza was the monster in this match so they tried to take him out and worked well together here.

Entering at #4 was Jeremiah Crane. He did great in this match to prove that he belong in the temple. Jeremiah Crane, Son of Havoc, and Matanza were trying to work together to take down Matanza as he was the monster in this match until they ended up hitting each other which had a lot of fun action between the four men.

Entering at #5 was Pentagon Dark. He did great in this match as he pretty much showed why he has cero miedo. His exchange with Matanza was fun to watch and him being Pentagon Dark was great as well. Cero Miedo!

Entering at #6 was PJ Black. He did great in this match as he was helping Johnny Mundo as he’s a part of Worldwide Underground. The flapjack/cutter combination that Worldwide Underground did on Son of Havoc was pretty cool.

Entering at #7 was Mariposa. She did well in this match for the time she has gotten. Her exchange with Jeremiah Crane was cool to see as she showed that she can hang with the men in Lucha Underground.

The first elimination came when Jeremiah Crane hit a double underhook piledriver on Mariposa, but Matanza took advantage of the situation as he hit the Wrath of the Gods on Jeremiah Crane to eliminate him from the match. It’s a shame that Jeremiah Crane didn’t get much time in this match, but he proved that he deserves to be in the temple so well done to Jeremiah Crane in this match.

The second elimination came when Matanza hit a chokeslam on Mariposa to eliminate her from the match. Poor Mariposa, she’s only lasted for like a minute or so. Also, Matanza looks unstoppable and he looks like a beast in this match. Great performance by Matanza thus far.

Entering at #8 was Rey Mysterio. He did excellent in this match as he showed that he still has what it takes to be a top guy in wrestling today. His exchange with Pentagon Dark was cool to see as I would love to see another singles match between the two down the road as their first match together in Lucha Underground was excellent. Booyaka! 619!

Entering at #9 was Dr. Wagner Jr. He did well in this match as he showed that he’s a seasoned veteran inside the ring. Dr. Wagner Jr. and Pentagon Dark were teaming up against Rey Mysterio as Rey Mysterio tried to fight back between the two.

Entering at #10 was Marty Martinez. He did great in this match as he was playing his creepy character as well as taking on the top guys in Lucha Underground pretty well. His exchange with Matanza was cool to see and that dive over the top rope onto Matanza was awesome to see. *Does Moth Dance*

Entering at #11 was Jack Evans. Je did great in this match as he was helping Johnny Mundo and PJ Black as he’s part of Worldwide Underground. Their taunt when they all came together was awesome.

The third elimination came when Johnny Mundo and PJ Black did a double superkick to the back of Son of Havoc’s head followed by standing corkscrew moonsault by Jack Evans to eliminate Son of Havoc from the match. Nice teamwork from Worldwide Underground and it’s a shame that Son of Havoc got eliminated earlier than I expected as I thought he would reach near the end. However, Son of Havoc did what he could here so good for him.

Entering at #12 was Sexy Star. Sexy Star did excellent in this match as she went up against a lot of tough men in this match so hands off to her for taking them to their limit. Sexy Star did fought well against Worldwide Underground for a bit until they took control over her. Jack Evans’ cartwheel corkscrew dive to the outside on Matanza and Marty Martinez as well as Johnny Mundo’s corkscrew plancha from the top rope to the outside on Matanza and Marty Martinez were awesome to see.

Entering at #13 was Ricky Mandel! Mark out moment! It’s been a while since we have seen Ricky Mandel in the temple and he’s a talented guy so it’s great to see him back. Unfortunately, Ricky Mandel didn’t get to do anything in this match as he got hit by a package piledriver from Pentagon Dark the moment he got in the match.

The fourth elimination came when Pentagon Dark was about to break Ricky Mandel’s arm, but then Black Lotus returned and she came with Io Shirai, Kairi Hojo, and Mayu Iwatani! Mark out moment for all four! Black Lotus hasn’t been seen since she got her arm broken by Pentagon Dark last season so seeing her again was awesome and she wasn’t alone and she got backup with Io Shirai, Kairi Hojo, and Mayu Iwatani! Io Shirai, Kairi Hojo, and Mayu Iwatani are three of the best women’s wrestlers in Stardom and they’re here in Lucha Underground! I never expected them to be here, but seeing them here is amazing. Stardom has invaded Lucha Underground!

Mayu Iwatani hit a diving hurricanrana on Pentagon Dark, followed by a kick and a tilt-a-whirl headscissors using the ropes by Kairi Hojo, followed by a superkick by Black Lotus, and Io Shirai finished Pentagon Dark off with a front flip piledriver as all four women left the ring after the damage they caused on Pentagon Dark which led to Johnny Mundo getting the cover on Pentagon Dark to eliminate him from the match. Wow, I didn’t expect Pentagon Dark to be eliminated early in this match, but it seems like it’s setting up a feud between Black Lotus and Pentagon Dark down the road. If that means we’re going to get matches between Pentagon Dark and the Stardom women, I’m all in as those should be excellent matches. Pentagon Dark did get eliminated, but his next feud is going to be a lot of fun. Cero Miedo!

The fifth elimination came when PJ Black got the cover on Ricky Mandel to eliminate him from the match. I expected that, but it’s really a shame that Ricky Mandel didn’t get a chance to showcase himself in this match. Hopefully, he’ll get another chance to showcase himself down the road since luckily, his arm isn’t broken this time.

Entering at #14 was Mascarita Sagrada. Mascarita Sagrada didn’t really do anything in this match as he got caught by Matanza and Matanza completely destroyed him in this match. Poor Mascarita Sagrada.

The sixth elimination came when Matanza hit Wrath of the Gods on Mascarita Sagrada to eliminate him from the match. Well, that was quick. Nothing else to say about it.

Entering at #15 was Famous B. Famous B didn’t really do much in this match, but he was definitely entertaining in this match as he was trying to make Rey Mysterio famous! Call 423-GET-FAME so you can be famous!

The seventh elimination came when Rey Mysterio hit a 619 on Famous B followed by a springboard splash to eliminate him from the match. Man, poor Famous B. He didn’t get to do much in this match. However, he did get his seconds of fame so that’s something. Either way, call 423-GET-FAME so you can be famous right now!

The eighth elimination came when Marty Martinez had Rey Mysterio in a sidewalk slam, but Rey Mysterio countered it with a roll up on Marty Martinez to eliminate him from the match. I was surprised that Marty Martinez got a lot of time in this match, but good for him as he has been getting featured more as of late. *Does Moth Dance*

Entering at #16 was The Mack. The Mack did excellent in this match as he was on fire the moment he got in the match. His stunners to everyone in this match was awesome to watch and his somersault dive to the outside was awesome too.

Entering at #17 was Joey Ryan. Joey Ryan didn’t get to do anything in this match because just like last season, he decided to handcuff himself again, but this time, on the railing of the stairs. Pretty smart move from Joey Ryan there until next entrant came in.

Entering at #18 was Mil Muertes. Mil Muertes did excellent in this match as he showed why he’s a beast in and outside of the ring. He even pulled the handcuffs off from Joey Ryan from the stair railing. That’s not human and that’s why Mil Muertes is a man that you don’t want to mess with.

The ninth and tenth elimination came when Matanza hit a spinning belly-to-back suplex on Dr. Wagner Jr. and Mil Muertes hitting a reverse STO on Joey Ryan as they both go for the cover on the men that they hit their move with to eliminate them from the match. That staredown between Mil Muertes and Matanza when they did the pin was epic. You know these two can tear each other apart if you look back at their matches in Season 2 of Lucha Underground. That was awesome to see as they began to brawl for a little bit.

Entering at #19 was Kobra Moon! Mark out moment! Kobra Moon has made her way back to the temple! We knew that she was coming back due to the backstage segments as of late, but now she’s back in the ring and that’s great to see because Kobra Moon is quite talented. She didn’t do much in the match until the next entrant came in.

Now, before I continue on with the match itself, it seems like Ivelisse couldn’t participate in Aztec Warfare III due to the ankle injury she suffered last week. A shame really as I thought she would do great in this match if she was in it, but since she’s injured again, it didn’t happen. Hopefully, she’s get better soon because she’s the baddest b*tch on the planet! Anyway, back to the match.

The eleventh elimination came when The Mack hit a stunner on Jack Evans to eliminate him from the match. Jack Evans did what he could in this match and he represented Worldwide Underground very well. Still loving the stunners that The Mack uses, it’s fun to watch.

The twelfth elimination came when The Mack hit a pop-up stunner on PJ Black with Sexy Star helping The Mack to pin PJ Black to eliminate him from the match. Just like Jack Evans, PJ Black did what he could in this match and he represented Worldwide Underground very well. That pop-up stunner that The Mack did was amazing. This is why The Mack is awesome. The Mack!

Entering at #20 was Drago. Drago did well in this match as he showed that he can hang in singles competition just as well as trios competition. His exchange with Kobra Moon was pretty cool as they’re in a feud at the moment which makes sense for him to go after her once he entered the match.

The thirteenth elimination came when Drago hit the Dragon’s Cradle on Kobra Moon to eliminate her from the match. I have a feeling that this feud between Drago and Kobra Moon is far from over and this is just the start of it. It will be interesting to see where this feud will go next after this.

The fourteenth elimination came when Matanza hit the Wrath of the Gods on Drago to eliminate him from the match. Poor Drago, he barely got any time in this match. Luckily, he got an elimination in this match so good for him. After Drago got eliminated, the babyfaces in this match worked together to try to take out Matanza. Sexy Star hit a double knee facebreaker on Matanza with The Mack hitting a stunner on Matanza followed by a 619 from Rey Mysterio onto Matanza, but Matanza still managed to kick out from the moves. Incredible. That is why Matanza is “The Monster”. Unbelievable.

The fifteenth elimination came when Rey Mysterio hit a sunset flip powerbomb on Matanza to eliminate him from the match. Wow! Rey Mysterio has pin and defeated Matanza! With that, it’s guarantee that we will get a new Lucha Underground Champion because of Matanza’s elimination, just wow. I didn’t expect this at all, but more things became unexpected after the elimination of Matanza.

The sixteenth elimination came when Matanza attacked Rey Mysterio from behind after his elimination as he hit the Wrath of the Gods on Rey Mysterio and left the ring going bizarre as he even pushed Dario Cueto off which led to Johnny Mundo taking the cover on Rey Mysterio eliminate him from the match. Wow, this side of Matanza when he loses is intense and I love it. He even pushed his own brother off because he was so frustrated that he lost. Great character development right there. I expect a feud between Rey Mysterio and Matanza after this once Rey Mysterio recovers from his attack from Matanza as he was taken out by a stretcher. Should be a great feud when it happens.

Jack Evans and PJ Black then came back into the ring to help Johnny Mundo to take out Sexy Star. As they were about to finish her off, Angelico then appeared from the top of Dario Cueto’s office and did a diving crossbody from the office to the ring onto Worldwide Underground! Mark out moment for Angelico’s return and his dive! Great to see Angelico back and it makes sense for him to take out Worldwide Underground as they were the ones that took out earlier in the season so great story continuity there. Also, no matter how many times that Angelico does that dive from the office to the ring, it always impressed me because that is an insane move to do and he did it perfectly as always so props to him.

The seventeenth elimination came when Sexy Star slowly covered Johnny Mundo from Angelico’s diving crossbody from Dario Cueto’s office to the ring to eliminate him from the match. Sexy Star finally got some revenge on Johnny Mundo after her loss against him for the Gift of the Gods Championship. It seems like we’ll be getting a feud between Angelico and Johnny Mundo after this as I think it will be a great feud between the two which should be fun to watch.

The eighteenth elimination came when Mil Muertes hit a reverse STO on The Mack to eliminate him from the match. The Mack sold the reverse STO from Mil Muertes very well and he did excellent in this match so props to him in this match. Then, it came with two, Sexy Star and Mil Muertes. I will talk about this as it was a singles match starting… now.

The match between Sexy Star and Mil Muertes in Aztec Warfare III was excellent as it told an excellent story of Mil Muertes being this unstoppable beast of force against Sexy Star being this underdog that has to overcome the beast that is Mil Muertes. Mil Muertes took a lot of big spots in this match where it looked like he got hurt a lot in this match with him getting DDT on the chair by Sexy Star and missing the spear as he went through the table. Props to Mil Muertes taking those big spots and making Sexy Star look strong in this match. Excellent performances by both individuals.

The ending of the match came when Sexy Star hit a diving double foot stomp on Mil Muertes through a table for the pin and win as Sexy Star is the new Lucha Underground Champion! Mark out moment! Wow, just wow. I didn’t expect Sexy Star to win this match at all, but she did it. She defeated Mil Muertes and become the first ever woman to hold the Lucha Underground Champion! The emotion on her face when she won the match and hold the Lucha Underground Championship on the palm of her hands was a sight to watch. Congratulations to Sexy Star, you deserved it!

So with the conclusion of this match, we’re going to get Sexy Star Vs. Johnny Mundo for the Lucha Underground Championship next week. It will be interesting to see how this match will play out since these two have a history with each other for the past few weeks. Should be a great and fun match to watch next week. Looking forward to it.

Excellent match and congratulations to Sexy Star for being the new Lucha Underground Champion!

Now, this would be the part where I end my review, but that’s not the case here as I have a special video for you guys to watch as it’s an internet exclusive that didn’t appear on television. I won’t talk about it much here since this review is mainly about the show and not the internet exclusive itself, but I recommend watching the video as it was a very emotional promo from Sexy Star and for those of you who are fans of Sexy Star should watch it. Anyone can be sexy and anyone can be a star!

Overall, excellent show that was focusing on one match and it was excellent. So many storylines and feuds here and I love it! Next week, we’re going to have Sexy Star Vs. Johnny Mundo for the Lucha Underground Championship which should be great. Looking forward to that. If you haven’t already, please check out Lucha Underground. It’s a great alternative to the mainstream wrestling and you won’t be disappointed. Looking forward to next week’s show. Lucha! Lucha! Lucha! Lucha!
