NXT Toronto Review: Do It Yourself, Oh Canada!

Published

on

NXT Toronto on November 19 was a great show. Now do I think that this NXT live special is the best one out of all of the NXT live specials? In my personal opinion, I think that answer is no as I still think NXT Dallas is the best NXT live special by far. However, this show was great in its own right as it had great to excellent matches, great moments, and great surprises throughout the whole show. Let’s break this down:

The pre-show was pretty good as always as we have Charly Caruso, Lita, and Mauro Ranallo doing the pre-show panel. We usually have Renee Young to be in these pre-show panels for these NXT live specials so having Charly Caruso doing the pre-show panel was quite surprising especially since Renee Young is from Canada. Despite that, I thought Charly Caruso did a good job here and I thought all three of them did very well for analyzing and predicting on the matches later on giving the matches history and purpose on why it’s happening which is great to see. Seeing #DIY, Bobby Roode, TM-61, Samoa Joe, and Shinsuke Nakamura heading to the arena was cool to see as it shows how ready they are and they are going to appear on the show. The interaction with the fans from Dasha Fuentes was nice to see too as it looks like it’ll be a fun show with that crowd. The video packages of the matches were great to see as well as they made me hyped up for the show later on the show.

We then see Mickie James backstage talking with Liv Morgan and Aliyah as she looks ready to take on Asuka for the NXT Women’s Championship later on the show. It will be interesting to see how Mickie James will deal with Asuka in this match later on the show. Looking forward to it when the times comes. Hardcore Country!

We then see Tye Dillinger backstage as he’s getting ready for his match against Bobby Roode later on the show. Loving the vest that Tye Dillinger is wearing as he is ready for Bobby Roode and he means business on this show. Tye Dillinger Vs. Bobby Roode should be a fun match to watch and I’m looking forward to it. Ten!

Pretty good pre-show to hype the matches for NXT Toronto. Now, let’s get onto the main card!

Now before I get into the show itself, the crowd in NXT Toronto was incredible. The crowd throughout the whole show were into it from beginning to end and I appreciated that a lot. Great crowd from Toronto for this show. Also, the commentary team for this show contains Tom Phillips and Corey Graves. These two have been the commentating team for this past year and the chemistry between these two have been great. Glad to see that both Tom Phillips and Corey Graves are staying in NXT for commentary as it’s going to be hard to find a new commentary team to replace them. Great work as usual from these two men.

I also wish that Triple H would come on the stage that introduced the NXT crowd like he did in several NXT live specials, but it didn’t happen and I’m okay with it. Plus, the video package for this show was incredible as they talk about the history of wrestling in Canada and the great moments and matches happening in Canada as well as showing some of the best wrestlers from Canada. Very nicely done video package and I’m ready hyped for the show. Anyway, let’s talk about the show!

We start off the show with Tye Dillinger Vs. Bobby Roode and it was a great match. The entrance for Bobby Roode was glorious as he got a choir on stage that sang his theme when he came out and it was glorious! Mark out moment! It’s nice to see these types of entrances as when you’re on a big stage, something should be different and Bobby Roode’s entrance was awesome as he got a pop from his native home in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Not only that, his robe was simply glorious!

Tye Dillinger got a great reaction as well as he goes face to face with Bobby Roode. Like I said before, this was a great match that told a great story on whether or not that Tye Dillinger can win a big match against someone like Bobby Roode. It was the veteran instincts of Bobby Roode against the hungry and determined Tye Dillinger and I think these two had a pretty great match together.

Tye Dillinger did great in this match as he got to show that he can hang with the top guys in NXT. The way Tye Dillinger interacted with Bobby Roode with the ten taunts was absolutely hiliarious so I enjoyed that a lot. His superkick to Bobby Roode looked devastating and he even got the crowd behind him in this match. A great performance by Tye Dillinger here.

Bobby Roode did great in this match as well as he was trying to make his opponent looked great as well as himself. Bobby Roode was being himself here as he tried to take down and humiliate Tye Dillinger in this match at every point possible. Bobby Roode’s mocking on Tye Dillinger’s taunts got him some heat in this match which was needed as Bobby Roode is the heel in this match so Bobby Roode did his job greatly here. Great performance by Bobby Roode here.

The ending of the match came when Bobby Roode hit the Lifting DDT on Tye Dillinger for the pin and win. Even though Tye Dillinger lost here, he looked great in defeat and I think he showed a lot in this match so big props to Tye Dillinger. As for Bobby Roode, with this win, he may be slowly getting up to the NXT Championship picture which should be great for him as he could be glorious in the NXT Championship picture. I’ll be looking forward to see what Bobby Roode will do next in NXT.

Great match and I’m looking forward to see what’s next for Tye Dillinger and Bobby Roode in NXT.

After the match, Bobby Roode left the ring and started to pose for a bit before heading to the back. Tye Dillinger then gets back up to his feet as the crowd gave him a standing ovation as Tye Dillinger said, “I’m sorry” to the crowd as he left the ring feeling disappointed.

It seems like Tye Dillinger isn’t very happy with his loss here and I don’t blame him as this match was very important to him on whether or not, he could win big matches and once again, he failed. However, Tye Dillinger had nothing to be ashamed of as he did great in this match and one day, he will get that big win. Great ovation from the crowd here showing their respect to Tye Dillinger. Ten!

We then see Asuka backstage warming up for her match against Mickie James later on the show. This is good as it shows how ready Asuka is for her match against Mickie James later on. Should be a great match and I’m looking forward to it.

TM-61 Vs. Authors of Pain in the finals of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic was a good tag team match. Before the match started, Paul Ellering was put inside the cage and he was being held high inside the cage as he watched on the match from above. This was a good way to have a clean finish to this match in case there was any interference from Paul Ellering here, but that didn’t really help as I will get into it later.

TM-61 did well in this match as they showed why they are the mighty and the mighty don’t kneel. Both members of TM-61, Nick Miller and Shane Thorne were impressive in this match. Shane Thorne did a high-angle senton on Authors of Pain from the structure attached to the ring that’s holding the cage up to the floor! Mark out moment! I didn’t expect Shane Thorne to use that structure in this match and he did it with grace. Awesome spot there.

Shane Thorne also took a nasty bump where Rezar sweeps his leg as Shane Thorne hit his head right on the ring apron which looked nasty. Luckily, Shane Thorne was okay after that spot so I’m glad he was okay. Nick Miller was impressive in this match as well as he got to showcase his strength in this match as he managed to hit a scoop slam and an exploder suplex on Akam with ease as well as doing a belly-to-back suplex on Rezar with ease. His moonsault on Rezar was executed perfectly. TM-61 continued to show their strength as they managed to hit Thunder Valley on Rezar, but Akam broke up the pin to prevent TM-61 from winning the match. Good performances by TM-61 here.

Authors of Pain did well in this match too as they showed why they are a dominant tag team in NXT and has yet to be beaten. The sidewalk slam/diving single leg foot stomp on Shane Thorne was impressive to see by two big men there. Good performances by Authors of Pain here.

The ending of the match came when Paul Ellering dropped the chain from the cage where Rezar tried to use the chain on Shane Thorne, but failed as the chain went into the crowd. Despite that, Authors of Pain were too much for TM-61 as Authors of Pain hit The Last Chapter on Shane Thorne for the pin as Authors of Pain are the 2016 Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic winners! Mark out moment! Authors of Pain were impressive in this tournament and they’re only going to get more dominant from here. Even though TM-61 lost here, they looked good in defeat and I’m pretty sure they will get a future shot at the NXT Tag Team Championships in the future.

Good tag team match and congratulations to Authors of Pain for winning the 2016 Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic!

After the match, Paul Ellering was lowered down and then he got out of the cage as he celebrated with Authors of Pain as Triple H, Goldust, and William Regal came into the ring and awarded Authors of Pain the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic trophy. Great to see Triple H, Goldust, and William Regal here to give Authors of Pain the trophy here as it shows how important this tournament is to them. Also, with this win, I expect Authors of Pain to be the next #1 contenders to the NXT Tag Team Championships. Whoever are the NXT Tag Team Champions by the end of this show, they better be ready as Authors of Pain are coming for them next.

We then see #DIY getting ready backstage for their match coming up next. This is good as it helps build up their match coming up next which should be excellent and it looks like they’re ready to do it themselves. Let’s get to it!

The Revival Vs. #DIY in a 2 Out of 3 Falls Tag Team Match for the NXT Tag Team Championships was excellent. Mark out moment! Wow…, just wow… Just like their match at NXT Brooklyn II, this was an awesome tag team match and this match could possibly be better than their match at NXT Brooklyn II, incredible. Just like with the previous two 2 Out of 3 Falls matches, I will talk about this match in three separate parts where each part will be each fall. Now, let’s get to it!

The first match between The Revival and #DIY in their 2 Out of 3 Falls Tag Team Match was great. Both of these teams went fast paced early in this match as the exchange between Johnny Gargano and Scott Dawson was fun to watch.

The teamwork between these two teams are incredible and they really compliment each other very well as The Revival were using their heel tactics to get the better of #DIY early in the match as #DIY were doing everything they can to get the early lead in this match.

The first fall came when Johnny Gargano was about to hit Scott Dawson with the slingshot spear, but Scott Dawson caught him and The Revival hit the Shatter Machine on Johnny Gargano to get the pin and first fall in the match. Okay, that was awesome to see the counter with the slingshot spear to the Shatter Machine. I also like how Tommaso Ciampa was getting a bit frustrated when Johnny Gargano ate the pin in the match as he knew their chance of becoming NXT Tag Team Champions was getting slim due to them losing the first fall. Great storytelling from Tommaso Ciampa there. Great first fall match between the two teams in this 2 Out of 3 Falls Tag Team Match.

The second match between The Revival and #DIY in their 2 Out of 3 Falls Tag Team Match was excellent. The storytelling in this match was excellent as #DIY were trying their best to get the second fall in this match while The Revival did everything they can to prevent #DIY from getting the second fall.

The Revival’s heel tactics here were incredible as Dash Wilder pulled Tommaso Ciampa down from the ring where the referee was distracted by Scott Dawson that he didn’t see the tag from Johnny Gargano to Tommaso Ciampa which led to the referee holding Tommaso Ciampa back as The Revival took advantage. Excellent work. The Hart Attack (Bearhug/Clothesline combination) by The Revival onto Johnny Gargano was cool to see. When Johnny Gargano made the tag to Tommaso Ciampa, the crowd went nuts as Tommaso Ciampa went nuts too with his vicious knee strike to Scott Dawson’s head. This was excellent.

The second fall came when #DIY hit the superkick/running knee strike to the back of the head combination on Scott Dawson to get the pin and second fall of the match. #DIY are getting momentum and they’re getting close to winning the NXT Tag Team Champions, but can they do it? Well, let’s talk about the third fall right now!

The third match between The Revival and #DIY was excellent. The final match between these two teams in this 2 Out of 3 Falls Tag Team Match was absolutely unbelievable. These two teams brought everything to the table and they did whatever they could to walk out on top with the NXT Tag Team Championships.

There were so many points in this match where I thought the match was over, but the match kept on going. Johnny Gargano’s slingshot DDT on Scott Dawson looked great and I thought the match was over at that point, but Scott Dawson managed to kick out of that. The European Uppercut/Bridging German Suplex by The Revival on Johnny Gargano was awesome and Tommaso Ciampa broke up the pin to save the match, incredible.

There was one point in the match where Dash Wilder slid one half of the NXT Tag Team Championships to the ring where Scott Dawson used it to defend himself from Johnny Gargano’s kick to the face. Scott Dawson then applied the inverted figure-four leglock on Johnny Gargano where I thought Johnny Gargano was about to tap out, but Johnny Gargano managed to grab the ropes to break the hold. Wow, that was intense and that was really close. They got me there.

The insane points in the match where I thought it was over continued as The Revival was about to hit Johnny Gargano with their own tag team move, but Johnny Gargano dodged it where Dash Wilder hit a superkick on Scott Dawson where #DIY took advantage and hit their own Shatter Machine (Flapjack/Double Knee Facebreaker) on Dash Wilder, but Scott Dawson broke up the pin to save the match. Wow! That was an amazing spot, that was awesome. Excellent performances by both teams here. Just incredible.

The ending of the match came when Dash Wilder was about to apply the inverted figure-four leglock on Johnny Gargano, but Johnny Gargano countered it and applied the Gargano Escape (Chickenwing Over the Shoulder Crossface) on Dash Wilder where Scott Dawson was about to break up the submission, but Tommaso Ciampa stopped him and applied the Bridging Fujiwara Armbar on Scott Dawson where both men tap out and #DIY are the new NXT Tag Team Champions! Mark out moment! That was incredible, simply remarkable. #DIY earned this win and they definitely deserved it as they were celebrating with the crowd after their title win over The Revival. Very happy for #DIY and congratulations you guys, you deserved it! Do it yourself!

Excellent tag team match and congratulations to #DIY for becoming the new NXT Tag Team Champions!

Jim Ross was shown at ringside, mark out moment! Seeing a WWE Hall of Famer in Jim Ross here was great to see as it makes NXT Toronto more special than what it is. Now, let’s get onto the next match!

Asuka Vs. Mickie James for the NXT Women’s Championship was a great match. Mickie James has made her return to WWE and it’s in a NXT ring! Mark out moment! Love that NXT gave this match the special treatment in terms of the formal introductions as they always do that for the Women’s Championship matches which is great as it shows how much the women’s wrestling means to NXT. Also, the entrance with Mickie James was great to see as we haven’t seen her in WWE for such a long time and for her to be in NXT is just incredible. She got a great reaction from the crowd so good for her. Here’s Mickie James’ entrance at NXT Toronto.

Asuka’s entrance at NXT Toronto was her usual entrance, but the mask she was wearing for her entrance was cool. Here’s Asuka’s entrance at NXT Toronto.

Like I said before, this match was great as both of these women went out there and delivered a very competitive match where either woman could have walked out the victor.

Mickie James did great in this match as she still showed that she still has it in a WWE ring even though she has wrestled in TNA and the independent circuit for the past six years. Her hurricanrana on Asuka using the ring apron to assist her was cool to see. Her Indian Deathlock on Asuka was well applied and her Mick Kick (Reverse Roundhouse Kick) on Asuka looked devastating. Great performance by Mickie James here.

Asuka did great in this match too as she managed to took Mickie James to her limit as well as showing a new attitude of hers as Mickie James was assisting Asuka to get back in the ring, Asuka completely ignored her and went back to the ring by herself. I’m sensing that Asuka is getting a bit too overconfident here, but it could be me. Also, her German suplex to Mickie James to the outside looked devastating. Luckily, Mickie James was okay after that spot, but that looked nasty. Great performances by both women here.

The ending came when Asuka applied the Asuka Lock on Mickie James where Mickie James tapped out as she retains her NXT Women’s Championship. Asuka once again showing that viciousness and brutality of hers in this match and Mickie James did great in this match despite losing. With this win for Asuka, who’s next for her for the NXT Women’s Championship? I guess we’ll find out as time goes on, but I’ll be looking forward to it.

After the match, Mickie James extended her hand for Asuka for sportsmanship, but instead of Asuka shaking her hand, she raised her NXT Women’s Championship in front of Mickie James’ face as she left the ring with confidence. Well, it seems like I was right with Asuka being overconfident here, but she has a good reason to as no one can beat her for the NXT Women’s Championship. Who will be the one that takes the NXT Women’s Championship away from her? I guess we’ll find out soon enough. Also, I would love to see Mickie James again whether it’s in NXT or in WWE because I think she could help the women in NXT or WWE tremendously. Only time will tell, but till then, thank you Mickie James!

Great women’s match and I’m interested to see what’s next for Asuka in NXT and hope to see Mickie James again soon down the line.

Pat Patterson was shown at ringside, mark out moment! Just like with Jim Ross, it’s great to see a WWE Hall of Famer and a fellow Canadian in Pat Patterson in this show as it really shows how special is NXT Toronto. Now, let get onto to the main event!

Shinsuke Nakamura Vs. Samoa Joe for the NXT Championship was an excellent match. Mark out moment! That entrance that Shinsuke Nakamura did with people playing the violins of his theme as he made his way to the ring, mark out moment! Usually on the big stage or a big event, Shinsuke Nakamura usually have something special and different and this one is no different. It was excellent. Though, I prefer the entrance with Lee England Jr. at NXT Brooklyn II, but this was an excellent entrance as well. Anyway, let’s talk about the match itself now. YeaOh!

The match itself was excellent as both men were very evenly matched as either man could have walked out as the victor. With these two men having a hatred towards another, they went out there and they tried to tear each other apart.

Samoa Joe was excellent in this match as he was being himself being the dominant monster heel that wants to destroy and end Shinsuke Nakamura. Samoa Joe did some excellent in-ring psychology here when he worked on Shinsuke Nakamura’s legs throughout the whole match. His German Suplex followed by the Dragon Suplex followed by the Straightjacket Suplex by Samoa Joe onto Shinsuke Nakamura was very impressive. Excellent performance by Samoa Joe here.

Shinsuke Nakamura was also excellent in this match as he was being himself showing swag and charisma throughout the match as well as trying to get his revenge on Samoa Joe on what he did to him a couple of months back. His knee strikes towards Samoa Joe looked painful as heck. His release German Suplex on Samoa Joe was also very impressive. When Shinsuke Nakamura hit the Kinshasa on Samoa Joe, I thought it was over, but Samoa Joe kicked out of it as Shinsuke Nakamura was selling his knee which caused him the match. Excellent performance by Shinsuke Nakamura here.

The ending came when Samoa Joe hit a low blow on Shinsuke Nakamura when the referee wasn’t looking followed by a uranage on Shinsuke Nakamura on top of the stairs and he finished him off in the ring with the Muscle Buster for the pin and to win the NXT Championship for the second time! Mark out moment! Wow, I didn’t expect Samoa Joe to win the title back as I thought Shinsuke Nakamura was going to hold the title until the NXT live special during Wrestlemania weekend so this caught me by surprise. However, I love that they’re making Samoa Joe very dominant here so props to NXT on that and Samoa Joe made history as he is the first man to become a 2x NXT Champion. Congratulations Samoa Joe, you earned it!

Also, it seems like to me that since these two men have gotten one win over each other, I expect a third match between the two happen at a future show. Maybe at the next NXT live special? Who knows, but either way, I don’t think this feud between Shinsuke Nakamura and Samoa Joe is far from over and they’re only going to continue their feud from here as they need to have the rubber match to see who is the better man. Looking forward to that match when the time comes. Joe’s gonna kill you!

Excellent match and congratulations to Samoa Joe for being the first ever 2x NXT Champion!

Overall, great show by NXT. Like I said before, even though I don’t think this is the best NXT live special that NXT has done so far since doing these NXT live specials as I think NXT Dallas is the best one, it was still a great show. The show was great with their special moments and matches.

Another great show for NXT in 2016 and it seems like we won’t be getting anymore NXT live specials later in the year so we have to look forward to them next year. We are the Natural eXhilarating Talents! We are the next generation! We are the future and the future is now! We are NXT! NXT! NXT! NXT!
