NXT 12/14/16 Review: The Manliest Man Lost to Glorious

NXT on December 14, 2016 was a good show that is building up characters as well as possibly building new feuds and storylines in the near future. Let’s break it down:

We start off the show with a video package highlighting Samoa Joe Vs. Shinsuke Nakamura for the NXT Championship at Osaka, Japan last Saturday and up next, it will be Shinsuke Nakamura Vs. Samoa Joe for the NXT Championship inside a steel cage at Melbourne, Australia last week. This is good as it shows people what happened last week on the show in case people missed or forgot about it. Plus, it helps the audience get excited for the match which is coming next as it should be excellent. Well done video package here.

Shinsuke Nakamura Vs. Samoa Joe for the NXT Championship in a steel cage match was excellent. Mark out moment! The match took place in the Margaret Court Arena in Melbourne, Australia and the crowd was relatively great throughout the whole match. Great crowd from Australia and I would love to see a NXT live special in Australia one day based on what the crowd did here in this match. Would love to see it. Anyway, back to the match itself.

Samoa Joe did excellent in this match as he got to showcase his dominance in the ring. His powerslam counter to Shinsuke Nakamura’s Kinshasa was well executed. Shinsuke Nakamura did excellent in this match too as he was trying everything he could to retain his NXT Championship even if it means sacrificing his body. His Kinshasa to Samoa Joe looked painful as he did three of them in this match as he did one from the top rope which was awesome. They managed to use the cage very well, but I wish they used it more. Other than that, excellent performances by both men here.

The ending of the match came when Shinsuke Nakamura hit Samoa Joe with a Kinshasa for the pin and win. A great win for Shinsuke Nakamura as the feud between Shinsuke Nakamura and Samoa Joe is over. There was a time in the match where Shinsuke Nakamura could have escaped the cage, but ended up not too as he finished Samoa Joe with the Kinshasa. Shows a lot of who Shinsuke Nakamura is as a competitor. I question who will face Shinsuke Nakamura next for the NXT Championship? I guess we’ll find out sooner rather than later. YeaOh!

Excellent steel cage match and I’m interested to see what’s next for Shinsuke Nakamura and Samoa Joe in NXT.

We then get a recap of what happened three weeks ago between Ember Moon, Liv Morgan, Aliyah, Billie Kay, Peyton Royce, and Daria Berenato. This is good as it shows what happened three weeks ago in case people missed it forgot about it and it also led to the next segment.

The backstage segment with Billie Kay, Peyton Royce, and Daria Berenato by Dasha Fuentes was good. Billie Kay and Peyton Royce said that they didn’t lose three weeks ago as it was Daria Berenato that lost and not them as they don’t associate themselves with losers. Daria Berenato then appeared and she said that she doesn’t want to be a part of their plans and she challenged one of them next week as Daria Berenato left as Bille Kay and Peyton Royce were scared.

It seems like Daria Berenato means business as I don’t blame her for being pissed off at Billie Kay and Peyton Royce as they did left her in the six-woman tag team match three weeks ago. It will be interesting to see how Billie Kay and Peyton Royce will respond to Daria Berenato’s challenge. Good backstage segment here.

Tye Dillinger Vs. Eric Young in a #1 Contender Qualifying match was good for what it was. Both men went out there and delivered a good match for the time it had as these two have some history with each other as Tye Dillinger was trained by Eric Young so I would love to see another match between them down the line using that history.

Both Tye Dillinger and Eric Young did well in this match as they got to showcase their characters in the ring. Good performances by both men here even though I want to see more between these two as the match was relatively long.

The ending of the match came when Alexander Wolfe and Nikki Cross got involved in the match which caused a disqualification to give Tye Dillinger the win. Even though I wanted the match to go longer, I think this was a good way to protect both Tye Dillinger and Eric Young as you don’t want Tye Dillinger to lose again as well as having Eric Young looking weak so this was a smart move.

After the match, SAnitY beat up Tye Dillinger, but Tye Dillinger fought back and took out SAnitY. After Tye Dillinger told SAnitY to bring it, Big Damo attacked him from behind and hit Tye Dillinger with a fireman’s carry front powerslam followed by a senton. He then left the ring as he stared at SAnitY before leaving.

It seems like Big Damo is getting really close to joining SAnitY as it’s only a matter of time when it happens. They should be a dominating force when Big Damo joins SAnitY. Will be very interesting to see what will happen next in this angle. Looking forward to it.

Good match and good post-match as Tye Dillinger moves on to the #1 Contender’s match for the NXT Championship.

No Way Jose Vs. Andrade “Cien” Almas in a #1 Contender Qualifying match was good. Both men went out there and delivered a good match that showcased their characters and charisma in the ring.

No Way Jose did well here as his pop-up knockout punch on Andrade “Cien” Almas looked devastating. Andrade “Cien” Almas did well in this match too as he was playing his character very well just like his Los Ingobernables gimmick in CMLL. Good performances by both men here.

The ending of the match came when Andrade “Cien” Almas hit No Way Jose with a Hammerlock DDT for the pin and win. A good win for Andrade “Cien” Almas in this match as he’s looking strong heading into the #1 Contender match for the NXT Championship next week. Tranquilo!

Good match as Andrade “Cien” Almas moves on to the #1 Contender’s match for the NXT Championship.

Roderick Strong Vs. Elias Samson in a #1 Contender Qualifying match was good. Before the match, Elias Samson sang a song to the crowd and it was a good song though the crowd hate him for it. Dang you Full Sail crowd, show some respect to “The Drifter” Elias Samson!

In all seriousness, the match was pretty good as both men looked pretty even in this match. Elias Samson did well in this match as he showed his aggressive and violent side in the ring and Roderick Strong did well in this match too as he got to showcase his in-ring ability well. Good performances by both men here.

The ending of the match came when Roderick Strong hit Elias Samson with the Fireman’s Carry into a Double Knee Gutbuster followed by the Sick Kick (Running Single Leg Dropkick) for the pin and win. A good win for Roderick Strong here as he looks ready heading into the the #1 Contender match for the NXT Championship next week.

Good match as Roderick Strong moves on to the #1 Contender’s match for the NXT Championship.

It has been announced that next week, we’re going to get Daria Berenato Vs. Billie Kay. After what happened earlier in the show, this match makes sense to happen and it should be an interesting match to see. Looking forward to it.

Oney Lorcan Vs. Bobby Roode in a #1 Contender Qualifying match was great. Both of these men went out there and delivered a great match where neither man looked weak in the process.

Oney Lorcan did great in this match as he showed what he’s capable of inside the ring. His European Uppercuts to Bobby Roode in this match were insane and his running blockbuster on Bobby Roode was well executed. Bobby Roode did great in this match too as he got to show his character and charisma in the ring. His spinning spinebuster on Oney Lorcan was well executed. Great performances by both men here.

The ending of the match came when Bobby Roode hit Oney Lorcan with the Glorious Drop (Lifting DDT) for the pin and win. Even though Oney Lorcan lost in this match, he looked great in defeat so he has nothing to be ashamed of. Not only that, Bobby Roode is looking great heading into the #1 Contender’s match for the NXT Championship next week. Glorious!

Great match as Bobby Roode moves on to the #1 Contender’s match for the NXT Championship.

Overall, good show that is building up characters as well as possibly building new feuds and storylines in the near future. Next week, we’re going to have Daria Berenato Vs. Billie Kay and Tye Dillinger Vs. Andrade “Cien” Almas Vs. Roderick Strong Vs. Bobby Roode in a four-way elimination match to determine a new #1 Contender for the NXT Championship which should be interesting to see. NXT! NXT! NXT!
