NXT 12/21/16 Review: The Number One Contender is Glorious!

NXT on December 21, 2016 was a great show that is building up characters as well as possibly building new feuds and storylines in the near future. Let’s break it down:

We start off the show with Daria Berenato Vs. Billie Kay and it was a good women’s match. After what happened a month ago as well as last week, it led to this match and these two women managed to pull a good match with each other.

Daria Berenato did well in this match as she got to showcase her MMA background. Her take-downs and strikes on Billie Kay looked nice. Billie Kay did well in this match too as she tried to get advantage of Daria Berenato at every point possible. Good performances by both women here.

The ending of the match came when Billie Kay was distracting the referee in the ring and while Daria Berenato was getting back into the ring, Peyton Royce rammed her into the ring and threw her back in the ring as Billie Kay hit Daria Berenato with a big boot for the pin and win. A good win for Billie Kay as the team of Billie Kay and Peyton Royce continued their dominance in NXT.

After the match, Peyton Royce threw Daria Berenato out of the ring as Billie Kay and Peyton Royce were about to speak. Billie Kay said that what they did to Daria Berenato is a lesson to everyone in the NXT women’s division as that is their fate if they mess with them. Peyton Royce then called out Asuka since Asuka said there’s no competition left as the competition is Billie Kay and Peyton Royce if she has the guts to face them.

It seems like Billie Kay and Peyton Royce are going after Asuka for the NXT Women’s Championship. It will be interesting to see how Asuka will respond to them. Should be a good feud if that’s the case.

Good women’s match and good post-match as I’m interested to see how Asuka will respond to Billie Kay and Peyton Royce.

John Ortagun & Anthony Bowens Vs. Authors of Pain was a good tag team squash match. Oh my god! John Ortagun made another appearance on NXT! Mark out moment! For those of you who don’t know, John Ortagun is known as Jonny Vandal in FIP and he’s a very talented wrestler who is Turkish. So if you can NXT, please sign John Ortagun!

Unfortunately, John Ortagun & Anthony Bowens didn’t get any offense here as Authors of Pain completey destroyed them here in this match as Authors of Pain won by referee stoppage after Akam hit a powerbomb on John Ortagun on top of Anthony Bowens where Anthony Bowens was out as the referee called for the match.

Poor Anthony Bowens. I hope he was okay after that bump he took because that looked like it hurt. As for Authors of Pain, they continue to look dominant as they’re looking to get the NXT Tag Team Championships at NXT San Antonio.

After the match, Paul Ellering got on the mic and said that no matter who are the NXT Tag Team Champions, whether it’s #DIY or The Revival, Authors of Pain will become NXT Tag Team Champions at NXT San Antonio.

#DIY, The Revival, whichever team wins the NXT Tag Team Championships, they’re going to have a hard time facing Authors of Pain as they have been dominant as of late. Either way, it should be an interesting tag team match at NXT San Antonio. Looking forward to it.

Good tag team squash match and I’m interested to see which team will face Authors of Pain at NXT San Antonio.

We then get a recap of what happened earlier in the show as Billie Kay and Peyton Royce called out Asuka after Billie Kay’s win over Daria Berenato. This is good as it shows what happened earlier in the show in case people missed it and it also ties in to the next segment.

The backstage segment with Asuka and Nikki Cross by Kayla Braxton was good. Kayla Braxton was interviewing Asuka about her response to Billie Kay’s and Peyton Royce’s comments and Asuka said that Billie Kay and Peyton Royce are no competition to her. As she was about to continue, Nikki Cross was at the backdrop of the set smiling at Asuka as Asuka smiled back.

It seems like we’re going to get Asuka Vs. Nikki Cross for the NXT Women’s Championship down the road which should be a great match. Will the match happen at NXT San Antonio? We’ll see. Either way, I’m looking forward to the match if it happens. Good backstage segment here.

We then see highlights of the #1 Contender Qualifying matches as well as some promos from Tye Dillinger, Andrade “Cien” Almas, Roderick Strong, and Bobby Roode. They were good as it helped build up the match coming up next as well as it what it meant to each man about this match.

Tye Dillinger said that he didn’t want to win the way he did last week, but he’ll take it as he wants to become NXT Champion. Andrade “Cien” Almas said that No Way Jose is a nobody and that he’s the man as he only cares about himself. Roderick Strong said that he worked so hard to get to this point and that winning this match will be his next step in his career. Bobby Roode said that he should be NXT Champion as he beat Andrade “Cien” Almas and Tye Dillinger while Roderick Strong hasn’t been in NXT long enough to deserve to be NXT Champion.

I like how each wrestler got to give their thoughts on the match as well as what they have to say on what this match means to them if they win. It makes the match really important so I appreciated that a lot. Good promos from everyone here. Anyway, let’s talk about the match!

Tye Dillinger Vs. Roderick Strong Vs. Andrade “Cien” Almas Vs. Bobby Roode in a four way elimination match was excellent. Mark out moment! I’m going to talk about this match into three parts where each part is an elimination and so forth so let’s get started!

Everyone in the match did excellent as they were trying to prove that they deserve to be #1 Contender for the NXT Championship as they put their bodies on the line. Every man in this match got a chance to shine where neither man looked weak in the process. I only had one problem in this match which is that they didn’t use much weapons in this match as the commentary said that this match was no disqualification expect Bobby Roode in the end with a steel chair, but he didn’t even used it so it was pointless. Should have made this match a regular four way elimination match, but other than that, it was excellent.

Andrade “Cien” Almas’ played his character well here and his moonsault into a standing moonsault was well executed even though he got countered by Roderick Strong. His double knees to the corner on Tye Dillinger looked devastating. Roderick Strong got some great offense in this match as his backbreaker to Bobby Roode was well executed along with his dropkicks. Tye Dillinger did everything he could to make sure that he would win the match as well as showcasing his character. Bobby Roode did whatever means necessary to win the match as he tried to cheat in certain points in the match where he pin Roderick Strong with his feet on the rope, but the referee caught him.

The Tower of Doom spot where Roderick Strong hit a superplex on Bobby Roode, Andrade “Cien” Almas hitting a electric chair on Roderick Strong, and Tye Dillinger hitting a powerbomb on Andrade “Cien” Almas was awesome to see. Great spot there. Excellent performances by all four men here.

The first elimination came when Roderick Strong hit the Sick Kick (Single leg running dropkick) on Andrade “Cien” Almas to pin and eliminate him from the match. Even though Andrade “Cien” Almas was the first man to get eliminated from the match, he had an impressive showing here so he had nothing to be ashamed of.

Tye Dillinger Vs. Roderick Strong Vs. Bobby Roode was great. These three men picked it up where they last left off as they gave everything they have in this match.

The exchange that Tye Dillinger and Roderick Strong had in this match was great to see. Would love to see these two in a singles match one day because what they did here was great.

The second elimination came when Tye Dillinger hit the Tye Breaker on Roderick Strong to pin and eliminate him from the match. Just like with Andrade “Cien” Almas, Roderick Strong had an impressive showing in this match despite losing so he had nothing to be ashamed of.

Tye Dillinger Vs. Bobby Roode was excellent. With these two having history with each other, you expect these two to bring everything in this match and they did as it was very back and forth between the two men.

Tye Dillinger did excellent in this match as they were certain points in the match where I thought he would have won. I thought his superkick on Bobby Roode would give him the win, but he kicked out. There was one point in the match where he hit the Tye Breaker on Bobby Roode, but Bobby Roode managed to kicked out of that. Even though I don’t like wrestlers kicking out of finishers, it made this match very important and big if people kicked out of finishers like that so I accepted the kickout of the finisher in this match. Plus, the expression on Tye Dillinger’s face when Bobby Roode kicked out of the Tye Breaker was priceless. Excellent storytelling there from Tye Dillinger.

Bobby Roode did excellent in this match too as he made Tye Dillinger look good as well as himself as he got hit by Tye Dillinger’s big moves and still managed to kick out. His spinebuster on Tye Dillinger was well executed and he played his role as a heel well. A glorious performance by The Glorious One.

The ending of the match came when Bobby Roode hit Tye Dillinger with the Lifting DDT for the pin and win. Man, another loss for Tye Dillinger. The man can’t catch a break as he felt disappointed with the loss after the match. Even though Tye Dillinger lost the match, he had an excellent performance out there so he had nothing to be ashamed of, but once again, he just can’t win big matches. Hopefully, Tye Dillinger will get his big win soon because he deserves it and he is “The Perfect Ten”. As for Bobby Roode, he looks ready heading into NXT San Antonio against Shinsuke Nakamura for the NXT Championship. Should be an excellent match between the two and I can’t wait. Glorious!

Excellent four way elimination match as I’m looking forward to Shinsuke Nakamura Vs. Bobby Roode for the NXT Championship at NXT San Antonio.

Overall, great show that is building up characters as well as possibly building new feuds and storylines in the near future. NXT! NXT! NXT!
