NXT 4/27/16 Review: “The King of Strong Style” Drifts Away “The Drifter”

NXT on April 27, 2016 was a good show that is building up characters and possibly building new feuds and storylines in the near future. Let’s break it down:

Before I start the review, I just want to thank the Dallas, Texas crowd in the Kay Bailey Hutchinson Center for being such a great crowd for NXT the past month. You guys are awesome and we will miss you as we have NXT return to Full Sail in Winter Park, Florida next week. Thank you Dallas, Texas crowd and hope to see you guys again in the future.

We start off the show with Tom Phillips announcing that later on the show, they will show highlights of Finn Balor Vs. Samoa Joe for the NXT Championship at a NXT live event in Lowell, Massachusetts, entitled, “Mayhem in Massachusetts”.

That’s a very interesting way to start off the show as normally, we don’t really see a lot of highlights of NXT live events so this a nice treat. Looking forward to the highlights later on the show.

Asuka Vs. Eva Marie was a good women’s match. Before I talk about the match, I just have to say the interaction between Tom Phillips and Corey Graves about Eva Marie was hilarious. I just have to say that.

Now back to the match, it was a good women’s match as Asuka help carried Eva Marie throughout the match. Though, I do admit that Eva Marie is getting better in the ring and I kind of hate the fact that crowd still boos her. I mean yes, Eva Marie is not the greatest women’s wrestler ever, but at least I can see her trying to get better so please give her a break people.

Anyway, Eva Marie did well in this match as well as Asuka being her usual self. Midway through the match, Nia Jax came in and stood by ringside to support Eva Marie. However, her support wasn’t enough as Asuka defeats Eva Marie with a spinning back kick.

After the match, Nia Jax enters the ring as Asuka was doing a feint spinning back kick to her as they both stare on. Nia Jax then helps Eva Marie up to her feet as they both leave the ring with Asuka and Nia Jax staring at each other.

Well it seems like we might get a future match between Asuka and Nia Jax in the future after this confrontation here. Asuka and Nia Jax did have a staredown before at NXT London so it seems like we might be getting that match sooner rather than later in which I can’t wait to see. Should be great.

Good women’s match and good post-match segment as Asuka Vs. Nia Jax for the NXT Women’s Championship should be a great feud down the line.

We then get highlights of Finn Balor Vs. Samoa Joe for the NXT Championship at Mayhem in Massachusetts where Samoa Joe defeated Finn Balor for the NXT Championship! Holy shoot! Samoa Joe is the new NXT Champion! Mark out moment!

Wow, when people say that anything can happen in a live event, they weren’t kidding as I did not expect a title change to happen on a live event at all and it only happens rarely so it was kind of a big shock.

Though, I do question why NXT did this title change on a live event rather than at the next NXT live special which is going to happen on June 8. I guess they want to emphasize that people should go to live events, but NXT are already doing very well with their live events so I don’t know what’s the point of this. However, if you’re not excited to go a live event, you should now because things like this can happen.

Plus, I like how Samoa Joe won the NXT Championship at the same place where he won the TNA World Heavyweight Championship from Kurt Angle at TNA Lockdown 2008. I just find that to be a very nice touch. Very happy for Samoa Joe here.

Also, NXT, if there’s any chance in the future, have a NXT TV taping or a NXT live special in Lowell, Massachusetts as that Lowell crowd was insane. Hope to see NXT go there for a TV taping or a live special one day, that would be awesome.

The post-match interview with Samoa Joe after winning the NXT Championship was great. Samoa Joe told everyone that he was the inevitable and he did it by defeating Finn Balor for the NXT Championship.

Samoa Joe is on a roll and with him being the NXT Champion, he may be unstoppable. Who can stop Samoa Joe at this point? Great post-match interview here.

3.0 Vs. The Revival was a good tag team squash match. Holy shoot! 3.0 just made an appearance on NXT TV! Mark out moment! NXT, sign this tag team! They are great and very entertaining, sign them now!

Plus, 3.0 had a great moment in this match with Shane Matthews shouting, “Defense” from the ring apron and the crowd was behind it! NXT, sign them now please! They’re over and they’re entertaining so sign them!

Unfortunately, 3.0 didn’t get much offense in this match as The Revival took them out literally as The Revival were showing a more vicious side to them which makes sense as they lost the NXT Tag Tea Championships to American Alpha at NXT Dallas. By the way, love the new shirts that The Revival got, they’re awesome.

After the match, Scott Dawson cut a promo and it was good. Scott Dawson says that there’s a reason why they’re called The Revival as they think they are the best tag team on the planet and everyone knows it. He then says that The Revival are looking to get back what theirs and that is the NXT Tag Team Championships. He puts every tag team on notice and they better be aware because they talk heavy, hit hard, and they won’t stop until they get their titles back.

Wow, that was a really good promo that Scott Dawson cut there. Would love to see Scott Dawson to talk on the mic more for The Revival because that was a good promo. It seems like The Revival are furious for losing the NXT Tag Team Championships and they’re looking to get those titles back. I love this new side of The Revival and interested to see where they go from here.

Good tag team squash match and interested to see what The Revival does next in NXT. Also, NXT, please sign 3.0! Boo-Yah!

NXT is returning to the UK for the UK Tour and for the Download Festival in June. Plymouth is already sold out so it looks like NXT is on fire with the UK once again. Should be great and fun shows for the NXT fans/marks in the UK.

Hype Bros Vs. BAM Factor was a good tag team match. I noticed that Alexa Bliss is not managing BAM Factor in this match as they usually stick together. Is the end of BAM Factor and Alexa Bliss? I hope not as I think they need each other in order to go up the ranks in NXT, but we’ll see as time goes on.

BAM Factor did well in this match despite not having Alexa Bliss by their side. Would love to see BAM Factor back up in the NXT Tag Team Championship picture as they are a really good tag team. Hoping for the best for them.

Hype Bros were over in this match and they did well here with Mojo Rawley managing to get the crowd behind him which is nice to see as they got the victory over BAM Factor.

After the match, Hype Bros were leaving the ring until The Revival showed up and attacked them from behind. Man, The Revival were serious when they say they will take out every tag team until they get what they want and they did that right here with Hype Bros. It may be possible that we’ll get a future feud between Hype Bros and The Revival from this, but we’ll see as time goes on.

Good tag team match and hope that BAM Factor go somewhere from here. Also, I’m being intrigued to see if there’s a feud for Hype Bros and The Revival in the future which should be good for both teams.

Carmella Vs. Aliyah was a solid women’s match. This is the second appearance that Aliyah has made in NXT TV with her first being the Battle Royal three months ago.

Aliyah did decent in this match showing her moveset and all, but she didn’t have much of a chance to showcase herself as they were focusing on Carmella in this match. Would love to see more of Aliyah in NXT as I know what she’s capable of as I saw a little of her work in the independent circuit as Jasmin Areebi, she has a lot of potential, but she needs a lot of work.

Carmella did well here in this match showing her character, charisma, and in-ring ability with her moonwalk, that top rope hurricana, that superkick, and her modified headscissors submission. Carmella seems to be doing well without The Certified Gs and it will be interesting to see where Carmella goes from here as she goes solo. Bada Bing, Hottest Chick in the Ring! How you doing?!

Solid women’s match and interested to see where Carmella goes from here without The Certified Gs by her side.

The backstage interview with Elias Samson by Dasha Fuentes was good. Elias Samson says that William Regal misinterpreted his song and his words. Elias Samson then says that he’ll show Shinsuke Nakamura why he is The Drifter and why Shinsuke Nakamura shouldn’t have drifted to NXT.

Elias Samson is really showcasing himself more and more lately character wise which is great to see as I think Elias Samson has a lot of potential in NXT. His match against Shinsuke Nakamura should be good. Good backstage interview here.

Shinsuke Nakamura Vs. Elias Samson was a good match. Elias Samson did well in this match managing to hang with Shinsuke Nakamura as he did get some pretty good offense in this match. That clothesline he did to Shinsuke Nakamura was awesome. Looking forward to see what Elias Samson does next in NXT since his feud with Apollo Crews is over with him being on the main roster now.

Shinsuke Nakamura was himself here in this match being all swag and it’s great. Can’t wait to see who Shinsuke Nakamura will feud with first in NXT. YeaOh!

Good match and interested to see where both Shinsuke Nakamura and Elias Samson go from here.

Overall, good show that is building up characters as well as possibly building new feuds and storylines in the near future. Next week, we’re going to get Austin Aries in action which should be fun. Looking forward to it. NXT! NXT! NXT!
