NXT Osaka 12/28/16 Review: NXT Takeover: Osaka

NXT Osaka on December 28, 2016 was an excellent show that felt like a NXT live special expect it’s not live. Let’s break it down:

Before I talked about the show itself, I just have to say that the crowd for this show was great as it was your traditional Japanese crowd with them being silent in the matches to show respect to the wrestlers in the ring until the big moments happen when the crowd pops and goes nuts. So much respect to the Japanese crowd in Osaka, Japan, in the Edion Arena.

We start off the show with a video package hyping up Samoa Joe Vs. Shinsuke Nakamura for the NXT Championship. This is good as it gets people excited for the match later on the show. We watched the match before a few weeks ago, but this time, they’re going to show the match in its entirety so it should be excellent. Looking forward to it. Well produced video package here.

Oney Lorcan Vs. Andrade “Cien” Almas was a great match. When Andrade “Cien” Almas made his entrance to the ring, he was wearing his La Sombra mask to the ring! Mark out moment! Before Andrade “Cien” Almas came into NXT, he was known as La Sombra in CMLL and NJPW wearing his mask so it was a nice touch for those who have seen his work before NXT and the crowd react nicely to it so it was all good.

Before the match, Oney Lorcan extended his hand, but Andrade “Cien” Almas kicked it away. I like how Andrade “Cien” Almas is sticking to his character and not caring about anyone which is why he didn’t shook Oney Lorcan’s hand. I liked that personally. Both men did great in this match where either man could have walked out victorious.

Andrade “Cien” Almas did great in this match as he got to showcase his character in this match. His double knee smash to the corner on Oney Lorcan looked devastating and he managed to play his Los Ingobernables character throughout the entire match. Great performance by Andrade “Cien” Almas here.

Oney Lorcan did great in this match as well as he got to showcase his skills in the ring. His running blockbuster and inverted exploder suplex on Andrade “Cien” Almas were well executed. Great performance by Oney Lorcan here.

The ending of the match came when Oney Lorcan hit a diving inverted exploder suplex on Andrade “Cien” Almas for the pin and win. I was surprised that Oney Lorcan got the win here, but a great win for him regardless as Oney Lorcan is very underrated and deserves more wins. Push Oney Lorcan in 2017 NXT!

Great match and I’m interested to see what’s next for Oney Lorcan and Andrade “Cien” Almas in NXT.

Liv Morgan & Aliyah Vs. Billie Kay & Peyton Royce was a good women’s tag team match. With these four women having issues with each other for the past few months, they finally settled it in the ring two on two and each team did well in this match.

Liv Morgan & Aliyah did well in this match as they got to showcase their skills in the ring as a team. The double kip-up that Liv Morgan and Aliyah did was cool to see. Aliyah’s arm drags and her springboard arm drag on Peyton Royce were well executed and Liv Morgan with her hot tag spot was well done. Good performances by Liv Morgan and Aliyah here.

Billie Kay & Peyton Royce did well in this match as they got to showcase their tag team chemistry in the ring. The double team work that Billie Kay and Peyton Royce did throughout this match were well done as you can clearly see the chemistry that these two women have with each other. Good performances by Billie Kay and Peyton Royce here.

The ending of the match came when Peyton Royce hit a bulldog on Liv Morgan onto Billie Kay’s knee for the pin and win for her team. A nice tag team move from Billie Kay and Peyton Royce there as they continue to dominate the NXT women’s division. It’s only a matter of time before they get their match against Asuka, but only time will tell.

Good women’s tag team match as I’m interested to see what’s next for Liv Morgan, Aliyah, Billie Kay, and Peyton Royce in NXT.

#DIY Vs. Tajiri & Akira Tozawa for the NXT Tag Team Championships was an excellent tag team match. Mark out moment! Not only that, Tajiri and Akira Tozawa have made their NXT debuts! Mark out moment for both! We have seen them earlier this year in the Cruiserweight Classic and now they’re making their NXT debuts in Osaka, Japan, and they did excellent here. Before the match, both teams shook hands.

Tajiri & Akira Tozawa did excellent in this match as they worked extremely well together in this match in order to try to become NXT Tag Team Champions. Akira Tozawa’s suicide dives and his release German suplexes were well executed in this match. Tajiri’s kicks throughout the match were devastating and we got to see the green mist too which was awesome to see as well.

#DIY did excellent in this match as well as they continued to show why they are the NXT Tag Team Champions. Johnny Gargano’s slingshot spear to Akira Tozawa was well executed. Tommaso Ciampa’s strikes in this match looked devastating. Do It Yourself!

There were certain points in the match where I thought the match was over as it was so evenly matched between the two teams. I thought that Akira Tozawa’s bridging German suplex on Tommaso Ciampa was the ending of the match until Johnny Gargano saved the pin. I also thought that Tommaso Ciampa’s powerbomb into a double knee backbreaker on Akira Tozawa was the end of the match, but Tajiri broke up the pin to save the match. Excellent performances by both teams here.

The ending of the match came when #DIY hit the superkick/running knee strike to the back of the head combination on Akira Tozawa for the pin and win. Even though Tajiri and Akira Tozawa lost here, they looked great in defeat so they have nothing to be ashamed of and #DIY continued to show why they are the NXT Tag Team Championships as they showed respect to Tajiri and Akira Tozawa after the match. Do It Yourself!

Excellent tag team match and I’m interested to see what’s next for #DIY in NXT before their match against The Revival for the NXT Tag Team Championships at January 11.

Asuka Vs. Nia Jax for the NXT Women’s Championship was an excellent women’s match. Mark out moment! Not only that, Nia Jax has made her return to NXT for one night! Mark out moment! This is the rematch from NXT The End so Nia Jax will do anything she can to avenge her loss against Asuka six months ago.

Nia Jax did excellent in this match as she tried to take down Asuka at every point possible. Her ura nage on Asuka on the ring apron and her powerbomb on Asuka looked painful as heck. Nia Jax looked like a monster in this match and this is the best match that Nia Jax has given throughout her entire wrestling career so props to her in this match. Excellent performance by Nia Jax here.

Asuka did excellent in this match as well as she tried overcome the monster that is Nia Jax. Her kicks and vicious strikes against Nia Jax were devastating. Her release German suplex on Nia Jax was incredible. Excellent performance by Asuka here.

The ending of the match came when Asuka hit a roundhouse kick on Nia Jax for the pin and win. Even though Nia Jax lost this match, she looked excellent in defeat and this was her best match yet so she has nothing to be ashamed of. As for Asuka, she continued to look dominant in her reign as NXT Women’s Champion as I’m interested to see who will challenge her next for the NXT Women’s Championship.

Excellent women’s match as I’m interested to see who will face Asuka next for the NXT Women’s Championship.

We get an announcement that next week, we will see matches from NXT Melbourne including Tye Dillinger & Buddy Murphy Vs. Bobby Roode & Elias Samson, Ember Moon Vs. Liv Morgan Vs. Billie Kay, and #DIY Vs. TM-61 for the NXT Tag Team Championships. Sounds like some good matches for next week’s show which should be great. Looking forward to it.

Samoa Joe Vs. Shinsuke Nakamura for the NXT Championship was an excellent match. Mark out moment! We have seen this match a few weeks ago on NXT TV, but now we get the full match in its entirety and it was incredible. A lot better than the cut out version, that’s for sure.

I already talked about this match in my review from December 7, 2016 so I have no intentions of giving my thoughts on this match again. However, if you want to read my thoughts on this match, then please go check out my review on that particular match by checking the link below.
