NXT Melbourne 1/4/17 Review: NXT Takeover: Melbourne

Published

on

NXT Melbourne on January 4, 2017 was a great show that felt like a NXT live special expect it’s not live. Let’s break it down:

Before I talked about the show itself, I just have to say that the crowd for this show was great as the crowd from Australia were hot from start to finish and we normally don’t see Australian crowds in wrestling TV much so this was a treat. So much respect to the Australian crowd in Melbourne, Australia, in the Margaret Court Arena.

We start off the show with Tino Sabbatelli & Riddick Moss Vs. The Revival and it was a good tag team match. Oh my god, Tino Sabbatelli and Riddick Moss have made their return to NXT! Mark out moment for both! It’s been a while since we last saw these guys as their last appearance on NXT were on the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic so seeing them here again was great as they have a lot of potential as a tag team.

Tino Sabbatelli & Riddick Moss did well in this match as they showed some tag team chemistry in this match. Tino Sabbatelli’s crossbody on Dash Wilder was nice to see and Riddick Moss catching Scott Dawson in mid-air and hitting a fallaway slam on Scott Dawson was impressive. Good performances by Tino Sabbatelli and Riddick Moss here.

The Revival did well in this match as well as they continued to show why they are the top guys in the NXT Tag Team division. The heel tactics that they did in this match were well done especially with the poke on the eyes from Scott Dawson on Riddick Moss which is a classic heel tactic there. Good performances by The Revival here.

The ending of the match came when The Revival hit Riddick Moss with the Shatter Machine for the pin and win. Even though Tino Sabbatelli and Riddick Moss lost this match, they looked good in defeat so they had nothing to be ashamed of. As for The Revival, they talk heavy and they hit hard. Enough said. Top guys out!

Good tag team match and I’m interested to see what’s next for Tino Sabbatelli, Riddick Moss, and The Revival in NXT.

Tye Dillinger & Buddy Murphy Vs. Bobby Roode & Elias Samson was a great tag team match. Buddy Murphy finally made his return to NXT TV after not appearing for the show for so long! Mark out moment! It’s great to see that Buddy Murphy got a great reaction from his home country crowd. Hope NXT pushes him as he’s a very talented guy.

Before the match, Elias Samson made his entrance was about to sign a song for the Melbourne crowd, but the crowd doesn’t want him to sing. He then began to sing for himself as the crowd booed heavily towards him until Bobby Roode made his entrance. How dare you boo Elias Samson Melbourne crowd! Show some respect to “The Drifter”! Anyway, back to the match itself.

Bobby Roode & Elias Samson did great in this match as they played their characters pretty well as well as getting themselves heel heat. Bobby Roode doing his Glorious pose at every point in the game was simply glorious. Also, Elias Samson played with the Australian crowd very well in this match as he took it all in and took it out on Tye Dillinger. Great performances by Bobby Roode and Elias Samson here.

Tye Dillinger & Buddy Murphy did great in this match too as they got the crowd behind them. Tye Dillinger was being his usual self as he is “The Perfect Ten”. However, the star of this match in my opinion was Buddy Murphy because he was on fire in this match. His somersault dive on Bobby Roode to the outside was awesome. Great performances by Tye Dillinger & Buddy Murphy here.

The ending of the match came when Tye Dillinger hit Elias Samson with the Tye Breaker for the pin and win. Good wins for Tye Dillinger and Buddy Murphy as Buddy Murphy finally got a win since NXT Brooklyn. Hope to see Tye Dillinger and Buddy Murphy get good pushes in 2017.

Great tag team match as I’m interested to see what’s next for Tye Dillinger, Buddy Murphy, Bobby Roode, and Elias Samson in NXT.

Ember Moon Vs. Liv Morgan Vs. Billie Kay was a great women’s match. All of these three women went out there and delivered a great women’s match where neither woman looked weak in the process.

Liv Morgan did great in this match as she got to showcase her skills in the ring more. Her double bulldog on Ember Moon and Billie Kay were well executed. This was probably Liv Morgan’s best performance on NXT yet so great for her. Great performance by Liv Morgan here.

Billie Kay did great in this match as well as she showed that she can hold her own without the help of Peyton Royce. Her powerbomb on Liv Morgan was well executed. Just like Liv Morgan, this was probably Billie Kay’s best performance on NXT so yet so great for her too. Great performance by Billie Kay here.

Ember Moon did great in this match too as she continued to show why she should be a future contender for the NXT Women’s Championship. Her aerial assaults in this match were cool to see and she got the crowd behind her which is great too. Great performance by Ember Moon here.

The ending of the match came when Ember Moon hit the diving corkscrew stunner on Billie Kay for the pin and win. Billie Kay sold that stunner like a champ, that was awesome. A great win for Ember Moon as she looks to become the next contender for the NXT Women’s Championship.

Great women’s match and I’m interested to see what’s next for Ember Moon, Liv Morgan, and Billie Kay in NXT.

#DIY Vs. TM-61 for the NXT Tag Team Championships was an excellent tag team match. Mark out moment! Both teams went out there and delivered an excellent tag team match where either team could have gotten the win and it would have been believable.

TM-61 did excellent in this match as this was their best performance in NXT to date. They managed to showcase their tag team moves and chemistry in the ring with Nick Miller with the fist drop and Shane Thorne with the standing moonsault. Not only that, Nick Miller was very impressive in this match as he got to showcase his strength in this match. His exploder suplexes and his sitout one-armed powerbomb on Johnny Gargano were well executed. Excellent performances by TM-61 here.

#DIY did excellent in this match too as they continued to prove why they are the NXT Tag Team Champions. The chemistry between these two is just incredible and they continued to deliver every time they’re in the ring. Johnny Gargano’s slingshot spear to Nick Miller was beautifully done. Excellent performances by #DIY here.

There were certain points in the match where I thought the match was over as Nick Miller hit a powerbomb on his own tag team partner on Shane Thorne as Shane Thorne hit a superplex on Tommaso Ciampa, but Johnny Gargano broke up the pin to save the match. Wow, that was very innovative and it worked pretty well. I also thought that the match was over when Tommaso Ciampa hit the powerbomb into the double knee backbreaker on Shane Thorne, but Nick Miller broke up the pin to save the match. Incredible. Props to both teams in this match as they brought it.

The ending of the match came when #DIY hit the superkick/running knee strike to the back of the head on Nick Miller for the pin and win. Another win for #DIY and even though TM-61 lost this match, they looked excellent in defeat so they had nothing to be ashamed of as the crowd applauded them after the match and #DIY showed their respect to TM-61 after the match too. They are the mighty and The Mighty Don’t Kneel! Do It Yourself!

Excellent tag team match and I’m looking forward to seeing #DIY Vs. The Revival next week for the NXT Tag Team Championships.

We get an announcement that next week, we will see Asuka making an appearance on the show as well as #DIY Vs. The Revival for the NXT Tag Team Championships. Looking forward to those segments next week, should be good.

Shinsuke Nakamura Vs. Samoa Joe for the NXT Championship in a steel cage was excellent. Mark out…, wait, we have seen this match a few weeks ago on NXT TV, but now we get the full match in its entirety and I already gave this match a mark out moment so no need to do it again.

I already talked about this match in my review from December 14, 2016 so I have no intentions of giving my thoughts on this match again. However, if you want to read my thoughts on this match, then please go check out my review on that particular match by checking the link below.

Overall, great show that felt like a NXT live special expect it’s not live. Next week, we have Asuka making an appearance on NXT as well as #DIY Vs. The Revival for the NXT Tag Team Championships which should be interesting to see. Looking forward to it. NXT! NXT! NXT!
