NXT 1/11/17 Review: The Revival of Tag Team Wrestling, Do It Yourself!

NXT on January 11, 2017 was a great show that is building up NXT San Antonio in two weeks. Let’s break it down:

We start off the show with a video package hyping up #DIY Vs. The Revival for the NXT Tag Team Championships later on the show. This is good as it helps build up the tag team title match later on the show which should be excellent. Well produced video package here.

The video segment between Asuka, Billie Kay, and Peyton Royce was good. Asuka was making her way to the arena until she saw Billie Kay. The moment she saw Billie Kay, Peyton Royce attacked her from behind as Billie Kay and Peyton Royce began to beat down Asuka. Billie Kay then pour water on Asuka’s head as they left.

It’s cool to see some kind of segment like this as we haven’t seen one like this in NXT for a while so it was refreshing to see. It’s cool to see Asuka looking vulnerable here as she has been looking strong as of late so seeing some type of weakness in her is nice to see as it made Billie Kay and Peyton Royce look great in the process. I expect Asuka to get her revenge on Billie Kay and Peyton Royce the next time she sees them. Good video segment here.

Macy Evans & Sarah Bridges Vs. Billie Kay & Peyton Royce was a good women’s tag team match. Oh my god! Sarah Bridges has made her debut for NXT! Mark out moment! For those of you who don’t know, Sarah Bridges is also known as “Crazy” Mary Dobson for her work in SHIMMER and Shine so it’s great to see her finally debut in NXT after signing with the company late last year, but this was just a way to introduce her and I expect a repackage from her down the line.

Sarah Bridges did well in this match as she hit a nice double missile dropkick on Billie Kay and Peyton Royce. Billie Kay and Peyton Royce did well in this match as they continue to show their great chemistry with each other. Good performances by both teams in this match.

The ending of the match came when Peyton Royce hit a bulldog to Sarah Bridges on Billie Kay’s knee as Peyton Royce pin her for the win. Another good win for Billie Kay and Peyton Royce as they continue their dominance in NXT and a nice performance from Sarah Bridges as I don’t think we see the last of her in NXT.

After the match, Billie Kay and Peyton Royce cut a promo as Bille Kay said that she and Peyton Royce are the most dominant force in the NXT women’s division. Peyton Royce then said that the NXT Women’s Championship belongs to them.

Asuka then came into the ring as she was stumbling after the attack from Billie Kay and Peyton Royce earlier in the show. She took out the referees that were trying to stop her as she took down Billie Kay and Peyton Royce before the number games began to build up on her.

Nikki Cross then came out and took out both Billie Kay and Peyton Royce as they began to retreat from the ring. Asuka then got back up on her feet and was about to go after Billie Kay and Peyton Royce, but Nikki Cross hit a missle dropkick on Asuka as she stood tall over her.

It seems like we’re going to get a four way match between Asuka, Billie Kay, Peyton Royce, and Nikki Cross here for the NXT Women’s Championship down the road, possibly at NXT San Antonio. Should be a fun match if it happens and it will be a tough challenge for Asuka as well. It will be interesting to see how Asuka will deal them.

Good women’s tag team match and good post-match as I’m looking forward to the possible four way match between Asuka, Billie Kay, Peyton Royce, and Nikki Cross for the NXT Women’s Championship at NXT San Antonio.

Monster by Starset will be a theme for NXT San Antonio and it’s a good song. NXT Antonio is just two weeks away and I can’t wait to see it. Should be a great show.

We then see a recap of what happened during the break as Asuka was shoving the referees away as she was still suffering the attacks from Billie Kay, Peyton Royce, and Nikki Cross. I like how NXT show what Asuka was feeling after the attacks she has gotten. It will be interesting to see how Asuka will react when she sees Billie Kay, Peyton Royce, and Nikki Cross again.

The backstage segment between SAnitY and Big Damo by Kayla Braxton was good. SAnitY was walking backstage until Kayla Braxton appeared to interview Nikki Cross about her attack on Asuka as Nikki Cross said that she wants the NXT Women’s Championship and she will take it from her. Eric Young then said that what they will take starts with the NXT Women’s Championship as they walked off. We then see Big Damo in the corner as he saw SAnitY walked past them.

It seems like Big Damo really wants to join SAnitY if he was spying on them. Not only that, Nikki Cross wants the NXT Women’s Championship. It will be interesting to see if Nikki Cross gets her championship match as well as if Big Damo will join SAnitY. Good backstage segment here.

Jonathan Cruz Vs. Elias Samson was a good match. Oh my god! Jonathan Cruz made another appearance on NXT! Mark out moment! Great to see Jonathan Cruz back on NXT even though it may be for one appearance, but it’s great to see him again. NXT, please sign him!

Before the match, Elias Samson sang a song with the usual end of what it needs is what I am as the crowd still boos him. Come on NXT crowd, show some respect to Elias Samson’s singing dang it! Anyway, back to the match itself.

Jonathan Cruz did well in this match as he got to show his skills in the ring. His tilt-a-whirl headscissors on Elias Samson was well executed. Elias Samson did well in this match too as he continued to show his aggressiveness inside the ring. His clothesline on Jonathan Cruz looked devastating. Good performances by both men here.

The ending of the match came when Elias Samson hit a rolling cutter on Jonathan Cruz for the pin and win. Loving the new finisher that Elias Samson is using as he made it look devastating. It will be interesting to see what NXT will do with Elias Samson next. What it needs is who he is!

Good match as I’m looking forward to what NXT does next with Elias Samson and NXT, please sign Jonathan Cruz!

We then get a recap of The Revival Vs. #DIY at NXT Brooklyn II for the NXT Tag Team Championships. This is good as it hypes the match between #DIY and The Revival later on the show. Should be an excellent match when it happens later on the show. Looking forward to it.

We then get a recap of what happened at NXT Osaka when Oney Lorcan defeated Andrade “Cien” Almas. This is good as it showed what happened at NXT Osaka between Oney Lorcan and Andrade “Cien” Almas for those who have missed it or forgot about it. Plus, it ties into the next segment which we will talk about next.

Oney Lorcan Vs. Andrade “Cien” Almas was a great match. After Oney Lorcan got the win on Andrade “Cien” Almas at NXT Osaka two weeks ago, Andrade “Cien” Almas looks to get his revenge on Oney Lorcan and they have a great match here.

Oney Lorcan did great in this match as he tried to get another win over Andrade “Cien” Almas. His European Uppercuts on Andrade “Cien” Almas looked devastating. Andrade “Cien” Almas did great in this match too as he looked to gain a victory over Oney Lorcan. Andrade “Cien” Almas continued to play his character in the ring with his poses and his slaps on Oney Lorcan. Great performances by both men here.

The ending of the match came when Andrade “Cien” Almas hit the Hammerlock DDT on Oney Lorcan for the pin and win. A great win for Andrade “Cien” Almas after losing to Oney Lorcan two weeks ago. Even though Oney Lorcan lost here, he looked great in defeat so he had nothing to be ashamed of.

After the match, Andrea D’Marco was interviewing Andrade “Cien” Almas in the ring about his victory and as Andrade “Cien” Almas was about to answer, he told the crowd to shut up as he said that 2017 will be his year to shine.

It looks like Andrade “Cien” Almas wants the NXT Championship this year and I don’t blame him as it’s the most prestigious prize in NXT. Looking forward to see what happens next with Andrade “Cien” Almas in NXT. Tranquilo!

Great match and I’m interested to see what’s next for Oney Lorcan and Andrade “Cien” Almas in NXT.

We then a recap of The Revival Vs. #DIY at NXT Toronto for the NXT Tag Team Championships in a 2 Out of 3 Falls match. This is good as it hypes the match between #DIY and The Revival later on the show. Should be an excellent match when it happens next. Looking forward to it.

Square Hammer by Ghost will be another theme for NXT San Antonio and it’s a good song. NXT Antonio is just two weeks away and I can’t wait to see it. Should be a great show.

The interview with Shinsuke Nakamura by Tom Phillips was good. Tom Phillips asked Shinsuke Nakamura about his win over Samoa Joe at NXT Osaka and NXT Melbourne as Shinsuke Nakamura responded by saying that he is proud to defeat Samoa Joe. Tom Phillips then asked Shinsuke Nakamura about his thoughts on Bobby Roode as Shinsuke Nakamura said that he likes Bobby Roode, but Bobby Roode isn’t strong enough for him.

Tom Phillips then told Shinsuke Nakamura that he wanted a word from Bobby Roode, but Bobby Roode instead gave something to him to give to Shinsuke Nakamura. Tom Phillips then handed Shinsuke Nakamura from what Bobby Roode gave him as it was a ticket from NXT Dallas. Shinsuke Nakamura then questioned about it as the interview ended.

I like how they referenced NXT Dallas where Bobby Roode made an appearance there from the crowd and Shinsuke Nakamura made his debut there. It will be interesting to see how this feud between Shinsuke Nakamura and Bobby Roode will play out. Good interview here.

#DIY Vs. The Revival for the NXT Tag Team Championships was an excellent match. Mark out moment! Even though this match wasn’t as excellent as their matches from NXT Brooklyn II and NXT Toronto, it was still excellent as both teams gave everything they had to get the victory.

The Revival did excellent in this match as they tried everything they could to take out #DIY. The way that The Revival worked on Johnny Gargano‘s leg throughout the whole match was excellent in-ring psychology. Scott Dawson‘s DDT on Tommaso Ciampa looked devastating. #DIY did excellent in this match too as they tried to retain their NXT Tag Team Championships. The punishment that #DIY endured in this match while still kicking out and fighting was incredible. Excellent performances by both teams here.

The ending of the match came when #DIY hit the superkick/running knee strike combination on both Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder to get the pin and win. Wow, another excellent match between #DIY and The Revival. Incredible. With #DIY retaining here, Authors of Pain are their next challengers for the NXT Tag Team Championships. It will be interesting to see how #DIY will deal with them when that happens. Do It Yourself!

After the match, Paul Ellering came in from the ramp as #DIY looked at him from the ring as Authors of Pain came in and attacked #DIY from behind. They hit the double powerbomb on #DIY as they stood tall over them holding the NXT Tag Team Championships as Paul Ellering loves the action he’s seeing.

It seems like Authors of Pain may have gotten #DIY’s number here as they pretty much destroyed #DIY post-match. Will Authors of Pain be able to take the NXT Tag Team Championships away from #DIY at NXT San Antonio? I guess we’ll find out in two weeks.

Excellent tag team match and I’m looking forward to #DIY Vs. Authors of Pain for the NXT Tag Team Championships at NXT San Antonio.

The backstage segment between William Regal and Asuka by Kayla Braxton was good. William Regal was in his office as Kayla Braxton asked him about what happened to #DIY as William Regal said that it will be #DIY Vs. Authors of Pain for the NXT Tag Team Championships at NXT San Antonio and that next week, there will be a contract signing between Shinsuke Nakamura and Bobby Roode.

Asuka then barged in William Regal’s office as she demanded a match for NXT San Antonio. William Regal then asked who where Asuka replied with all of them.

I guess when Asuka meant all of them, she meant Billie Kay, Peyton Royce, and Nikki Cross. It seems like that match is going to happen and if that’s the case, I’ll be looking forward to it as it should be a fun match. Next week looks good with the contract signing between Shinsuke Nakamura and Bobby Roode which should be fun. Good backstage segment here to end the show.

Overall, great show that is building up NXT San Antonio in two weeks. Next week, we are going to have a contract signing between Shinsuke Nakamura and Bobby Roode which should be interesting to see. Looking forward to it. NXT! NXT! NXT!
