NXT 1/18/17 Review: YeaOh or Glorious?!

on

NXT on January 18, 2017 was a good show that is building up NXT San Antonio next week. Let’s break it down:

We start off the show with a video package hyping up the contract signing between Shinsuke Nakamura and Bobby Roode later on the show. This is good as it helps build up the contract signing later on the show which should be good. Well produced video package here.

Kennedy Lewis Vs. Nikki Cross was a good women’s squash match. Oh my god! Kennedy Lewis has made an appearance on NXT! Mark out moment! For those of you who don’t know, Kennedy Lewis is also known as Kennadi Brink who has worked in ROH and SHINE so it’s great to see her in NXT.

Unfortunately, Kennedy Lewis didn’t get much offense in this match as Nikki Cross completely demolished her in this match as Nikki Cross finished Kennedy Lewis off with the swinging fisherman’s neckbreaker for the pin and win. A good win for Nikki Cross as she’s looking to become NXT Women’s Champion at NXT San Antonio. SAnitY!

Good women’s squash match and I hope to see Kennedy Lewis back in NXT down the line.

We then get an announcement that at NXT San Antonio, it will be Asuka Vs. Billie Kay Vs. Peyton Royce Vs. Nikki Cross in a Fatal Four-Way match for the NXT Women’s Championship. After what happened last week, it made sense for this match to happen and it should be good when it happens. Looking forward to it.

Intro 2 by NF will be a theme for NXT San Antonio and it’s a good song. NXT Antonio is next week and I can’t wait to see it. Should be a great show.

The backstage segment between No Way Jose and Kona Reeves by Kayla Braxton was good. Kayla Braxton was interviewing No Way Jose about 2017 as No Way Jose said it’s a new year and he’s going to do the same thing as he’s No Way Jose. Kona Reeves then interrupted him as he told No Way Jose that he wasn’t happy that he didn’t help him against SAnitY back in Toronto. No Way Jose then said it was awkward and told Kona Reeves that if you want to come to the ring to have fun or fight, he’ll gladly give it to him as Kona Reeves left smirking.

It seems like we’ll be getting No Way Jose Vs. Kona Reeves down the road. Whether it’s at NXT San Antonio or on NXT TV, it should be an interesting match and it gives both men something to do as well. Good backstage segment here.

The backstage segment between TM-61 and The Revival by Kayla Braxton was good. Kayla Braxton was interviewing The Revival about what’s next for them after losing the NXT Tag Team Championships to #DIY. Dash Wilder said that 2016 was the year of The Revival and Scott Dawson said that at NXT San Antonio, it should be a three-way tag team match for the NXT Tag Team Champions because they are the best tag team on the planet.

TM-61 then showed up as Nick Miller told The Revival that they have to earn the right to demand title matches as you got to fight your way for one just like everyone else. Scott Dawson then told TM-61 that they’re different and they have earned the right for demanding title matches. He then said that TM-61 are at the bottom of the NXT Tag Team division and that they will cripple TM-61 as they leave.

It seems like we’ll be getting a feud between TM-61 and The Revival here which is fine by me because a feud between those two teams would be great. Can’t wait to see their match when it happens. Good backstage segment here.

Roderick Strong Vs. Steve Cutler was a good match. Roderick Strong got a new theme here and it seems pretty good in my opinion. Great to see Steve Cutler back as he has a lot of potential and I could see him being a star in NXT down the road.

Steve Cutler did well in this match as he got to showcase his skills in the ring. His dropkick on Roderick Strong’s face was well executed. Roderick Strong did well in this match too as he also showcase his skills in the ring. His belly-to-back suplex transitioned into front slam on Steve Cutler looked devastating. Good performances by both men here.

The ending of the match came when Roderick Strong hit Steve Cutler with a Sick Kick (Running single leg dropkick) for the pin and win. A good win for Roderick Strong as he looks to become NXT Champion in 2017 and a good effort from Steve Cutler here despite losing.

After the match, Dasha Fuentes came in interviewing Roderick Strong about what Andrade “Cien” Almas said to him last week and Roderick Strong said that he doesn’t care about what Andrade “Cien” Almas has to say as he came to NXT for one reason only and that is to become NXT Champion.

It seems like we’re going to get a possible feud and match between Roderick Strong and Andrade “Cien” Almas in NXT down the road and if that’s the case, I’m all for it as it should give us a great match. Looking forward to that match and feud when it happens.

Good match and I’m interested to see what’s next for Roderick Strong and Steve Cutler in NXT.

The backstage segment between Ember Moon and Liv Morgan by Kayla Braxton was good. Kayla Braxton was interviewing Ember Moon about her position in the NXT Women’s division and Ember Moon said that she is on the outside looking in for this fatal four-way match as when it ends, she will forge her own destiny. Liv Morgan then came in and said that she and Ember want the same thing, the NXT Women’s Championship. She then challenged Ember Moon to a match to prove themselves wheer Ember Moon accepted and that she will go after the NXT Women’s Championship once she’s done with her.

It seems like we’re going to get a future match between Ember Moon and Liv Morgan down the line which I’m fine with as it should be a good match between the two of them. Looking forward to it. Good backstage segment here.

This Light I Hold by Memphis May Fire will be a theme for NXT San Antonio and it’s a good song. NXT Antonio is next week and I can’t wait to see it. Should be a great show.

The promo segment between Tye Dillinger, SAnitY, and Big Damo was good. Tye Dillinger came into the ring and thank everyone for chanting for him after what he has gone through for the past few months. Tye Dillinger said that he doesn’t know what’s next for him, but he was this close to winning the fatal four-way match last month and there’s only so many times you can let down the people who have your back for the last fifteen years as Tye Dillinger questioned himself on whether he has it anymore. Despite that, he said that William Regal and the fans still believe in him.

As Tye Dillinger was about to continue, he was interrupted by SAnitY as Eric Young was talking to Tye Dillinger by the ramp by saying that Tye Dillinger doesn’t have it, but could have it as he needs some guidance to make the right choices. Alexander Wolfe then came down to the ring and offered Tye Dillinger a vest that was once worn by Sawyer Fulton.

Tye Dillinger hold the vest for a few seconds before dropping it to the floor as Eric Young motioned to Alexander Wolfe to halt as he came down the ramp, picked up the vest, and came into the ring. Eric Young told Tye Dillinger that he gets it as the right choice can be unclear. He said that 2016 was supposed to be his year, but it wasn’t. However, he will make 2017 his year by doing it his way or SAnitY’s way.

Eric Young then gave Tye Dillinger the vest and told him that this is not a request, but an order. Tye Dillinger then threw the vest down as he did his pose towards Eric Young. He then brawled with SAnitY and was about to finish off Eric Young until Big Damo came in as he hit a spear on Tye Dillinger. Big Damo then hit Tye Dillinger with an Ulster Plantation (One-handed electric chair driver) to take him out.

Eric Young then handed Big Damo the vest as Big Damo holded the vest over his shoulder as Big Damo has now joined SAnitY with Eric Young being happy about it.

It seems like Big Damo has finally joined SAnitY. A great decision from Big Damo and Eric Young in this case. I expect we’re going to have a match between Tye Dillinger and Eric Young because of this which should be a good match if it happens. SAnitY!

Good promo segment and I’m looking forward to what’s next between Tye Dillinger and SAnitY in NXT.

We then get an announcement that at NXT San Antonio, it will be Tye Dillinger Vs. Eric Young. After what happened in the last segment, it made sense for this match to happen. Should be a good match and I’m looking forward to it.

TM-61 Vs. The Revival was a good tag team match. After what happened earlier in the show, it led to this match and it was good for what it was as these two teams planned to make a statement in the NXT Tag Team division.

The Revival did well in this match as they tried to get the advantage over TM-61 as they attacked TM-61 the moment the bell rang which was cool to see. The chop block from Scott Dawson onto Shane Thorne looked painful as heck. The Shatter Machine that The Revival hit on Shane Thorne was executed perfectly. TM-61 did well in this match too as they showed why they are the mighty that don’t kneel. The hot tag from Shane Thorne to Nick Miller as Nick Miller cleaned house on The Revival was cool to see as Nick Miller was on fire. Good performances by both teams here.

The ending of the match came when Shane Thorne locked in an inside cradle pin on Scott Dawson to get the pin and win. Wow, a great victory for TM-61 as they got a victory over the 2x NXT Tag Team Champions in The Revival. Great win for TM-61 as they are the mighty and The Mighty Don’t Kneel!

After the match, The Revival immediately attacked TM-61 as they hit Nick Miller with a Shatter Machine. The Revival then hit Shane Thorne with the backbreaker/diving elbow drop combination followed by the figure-four leglock/diving single foot stomp on Shane Thorne’s knee as the referees checked on him after the assault.

Apparently, this was a way to write Shane Thorne off as he suffered a knee injury that would take him out for several months. If they’re going to continue the feud between TM-61 and The Revival once Shane Thorne recovers, this was a good way to write him off. I wish Shane Thorne for a speedy recovery.

Good tag team match and I’m looking forward to seeing what’s next for The Revival in NXT. Also, get better soon Shane Thorne!

We then get an announcement that at NXT San Antonio, it will be Roderick Strong Vs. Andrade “Cien” Almas. After what happened earlier in the show, it made sense for this match to happen. Should be a great match and I’m looking forward to it.

The contract signing between Shinsuke Nakamura and Bobby Roode by William Regal was great. William Regal was in the ring as he called out both Shinsuke Nakamura and Bobby Roode for the contract signing where both of them had great entrances to the ring.

As William Regal was about to speak, Bobby Roode cut him off and said to William Regal that the contract signing will not have any fighting unlike the other contract signings. He then said to William Regal that Shinsuke Nakamura Vs. Bobby Roode for the NXT Championship at NXT San Antonio will be big. Bobby Roode then told Shinsuke Nakamura that he is pretty familiar with his work in Japan, but he felt that Shinsuke Nakamura was never worth his time.

Bobby Roode then told Shinsuke Nakamura about giving his ticket to him from NXT Dallas which was the show where Shinsuke Nakamura made a name for himself. He then told Shinsuke Nakamura that he has no style and that he looked like he’s from the Thriller music movie by Michael Jackson. Bobby Roode then made fun of Shinsuke Nakamura’s physical actions and his half of a haircut. Shinsuke Nakamura then said to Bobby Roode that he knew their paths would cross as he called Roode a dog in Japanese and Bobby Roode didn’t like it.

Shinsuke Nakamura then told Bobby Roode that he won’t change NXT as long as he’s NXT Champion. Bobby Roode then told Shinsuke Nakamura that everyone fears change, but he’s going to be in the ring with the biggest superstar of all time with “The It Factor of Sports Entertainment”, Bobby Roode. Bobby Roode then called Shinsuke Nakamura a joke as he said that everyone in the back and in the crowd are wanting to be like him. He then said at NXT San Antonio, he will silence all of Shinsuke Nakamura’s fans as he will take the NXT Championship away from him.

Bobby Roode then signed the contract and after that, he was about to do his glorious pose as well as saying glorious until Shinsuke Nakamura stopped him as he told Bobby Roode that he looks great, but he won’t be taking the NXT Championship at NXT San Antonio. Shinsuke Nakamura then signed the contract and told Bobby Roode that he will be kicking his head off and it will be glorious as he does the glorious pose in front of Bobby Roode as Bobby Roode goes nuts. Both men stared each other afterwards.

This is great build up to NXT San Antonio next week as both men did great on the mic here. Bobby Roode’s facial reactions when Shinsuke Nakamura made fun of me were hilarious. I expect the match between Shinsuke Nakamura and Bobby Roode at NXT San Antonio to be amazing and I hope it will be. YeaOh! Glorious!

Great contract signing as I’m looking forward to Shinsuke Nakamura Vs. Bobby Roode at NXT San Antonio for the NXT Championship.

Overall, good show that is building up NXT San Antonio next week. Next week, we are going to have Ember Moon Vs. Liv Morgan which should be interesting to see. Looking forward to it. NXT! NXT! NXT!
