NXT 5/4/16 Review: The World Class Maniac is on the Hunt

NXT on May 4, 2016 was a great show that is building up characters as well as possibly building new feuds and storylines in the near future, and the debut of a surprising wrestler. Let’s break it down:

Before I start the review, I just to have say that the Full Sail crowd on this show was on fire. Great crowd for this show and they were into the show from beginning to end. Love you Full Sail crowd, you guys are awesome!

We start off the show with a promo segment between Samoa Joe and Eric Young and it was great. Samoa Joe talks about how he’s the man that keeps his word and that his victory over Finn Balor was inevitable. He says that he put the whole world on notice and it’s a new era where he runs things. He also says that if anyone has a problem with him, he will beat them down and choke them out.

After Samoa Joe cut his promo, Eric Young appears and makes his NXT TV debut! Eric Young tells Samoa Joe that he knows him and that the only thing that is guaranteed is change and collecting championships. Eric Young says that things changed for Samoa Joe and now things are going to change for him. Samoa Joe then stares at Eric Young and leaves the ring as he shouts to Eric Young that he doesn’t belong in the same ring as him.

Holy shoot! Eric Young is now on NXT! Mark out moment! The moment I saw Eric Young’s face and his name up in the titantron, I marked out like a little beach. It was a great moment for me and I’m so happy for Eric Young as he has done a lot in the wrestling business especially for his work in TNA. Now, he’s on NXT! Love that NXT is letting Eric Young being himself with “The World Class Maniac” gimmick as that is probably one of Eric Young’s best gimmicks so far in his wrestling career. His theme is awesome too as it’s like a remix of his TNA theme, I love it!

The promo that Samoa Joe cut before Eric Young came out was pretty good. It shows how much of a threat Samoa Joe is and that nobody can touch him. I also love that Eric Young acknowledges his history with Samoa Joe as they have face each other and known each other for more than a decade so that was a nice touch. It seems like we’ll be getting a feud between Samoa Joe and Eric Young down the road in NXT which should be great. I can’t wait for that to happen.

Great promo segment and I can’t wait to see what’s next for Samoa Joe and Eric Young!

Tessa Blanchard Vs. Nia Jax was a good women’s squash match. Holy shoot! Tessa Blanchard has made another appearance in NXT! Mark out moment! She even got an entrance and a theme now, yes! NXT, if you haven’t already, please sign her! Thank you.

Unfortunately, Tessa Blanchard didn’t get much offense in this match as Nia Jax completely annihilated her in this match.

Also, I love the new entrance for Nia Jax with that opening, it looks awesome. Nia Jax was showing her dominance in this match which makes sense as she might be the next challenger for Asuka’s NXT Women’s Championship so I’m looking forward to that when that time comes. That should be a great feud if it happens.

Good women’s squash match and interested to see where Nia Jax goes from here. Also, NXT, sign Tessa Blanchard!

Austin Aries Vs. Tye Dillinger was a great match. Wow, first we got a new entrance for Nia Jax, and now Tye Dillinger with the countdown to ten, that’s awesome.

Tye Dillinger showed a lot in this match which is great to see because he is a very underrated wrestler in NXT. His backbreakers and neckbreakers to Austin Aries looked devastating. Hope to see Tye Dillinger get a push in NXT in the near future because he did great in this match.

Austin Aries did great in this match as well and he sold Tye Dillinger’s offense pretty well. He gets the victory for Tye Dillinger after a 450 splash. So it seems now that Austin Aries has two new finishers in NXT possibly with the discus elbow smash and the 450 splash. Looks great for Austin Aries’ moveset as he continues to be great. Can’t wait to see what his next feud in NXT will be.

Great match and I can’t wait to see what’s next for Austin Aries and Tye Dillinger in NXT.

We then get a recap of what happened last week between Hype Bros and The Revival as The Revival attacked Hype Bros from behind in order to send a message to American Alpha. This was good as it helps to remind the audience on what happened last week in case anyone forgot about it or missed it.

Hype Bros Vs. The Revival was a good tag team match. After what happened last week with The Revival attacking Hype Bros from behind, this match makes perfect sense.

Both of these teams did pretty well in this match showcasing their in-ring chemistry as well as their characters. Hype Bros were being their energetic selves in this match while The Revival were showing that new vicious streak of theirs ever since they lost the NXT Tag Team Championships to American Alpha at NXT Dallas.

In the end, The Revival came up victorious as they’re looking to regain their NXT Tag Team Championships from American Alpha. I can’t wait to see when The Revival will get their rematch against American Alpha and interested to see what Hype Bros does next in NXT.

Good tag team match and interested to see where both Hype Bros and The Revival go on from here.

The backstage interview with Alex Riley by new NXT host, Andrea D’Marco was good. Andrea D’Marco tells Alex Riley that he has a match with Shinsuke Nakamura next week and Alex Riley responds with how he doesn’t know what strong style is. Alex Riley says that Shinsuke Nakamura may have been handing out beatings around the world for years, but next week, he’s going to give him one as he goes into rage mode.

With Rich Brennan being released, we do need new interviewers for NXT and it seems like we got another one in the form of Andrea D’Marco. She did a good job here and hope to see more of her work.

Even though a lot of people hate Alex Riley, you can’t deny that the guy can talk, the guy has charisma, and he showed that with this promo right here.

So next week, we’re going to have Shinsuke Nakamura Vs. Alex Riley. That should be a fun match and it should be a good showcase for Alex Riley to go up against someone like Shinsuke Nakamura. Looking forward to it. Good backstage interview here.

No Way Jose Vs. Noah Kekoa was a solid squash match. Great to see that Noah Kekoa made his NXT TV debut as I do see a lot of potential in him with his work in the independent circuit. All he needs is a character for NXT to give him and I think he’s ready as he has charisma and he’s a solid worker in the ring. Would love to see more of him in NXT in the near future.

No Way Jose is getting really over with the fans now which is great to see. Also, love that he has a new finisher now with that Full Nelson Slam. It’s a much better finisher for No Way Jose than that baseball punch he uses which is much better suited for a signature move. Can’t wait to see who Now Way Jose will feud with first in NXT.

Solid squash match and can’t wait to see what’s next for No Way Jose.

The backstage promo with Austin Aries by Cathy Kelley was great. Austin Aries saying that Tye Dillinger was an A level talent, but he’s a double A level talent. Austin Aries then says that the audience doesn’t know how to take him as people think he seems to be under the radar. As a result, Austin Aries then says that he may need to take a little extra initiative to get to the top as he needs to replenish his potassium levels with a banana.

First of all, glad to see Cathy Kelley again as she seems to be taking over Rich Brennan’s and Tom Phillips’ place with being the backstage interviewers along with Andrea D’Marco. She’s doing a great job and would love to see more of her work as well.

Austin Aries was being great on the mic as always which is not surprising. However, he does have a good point that he has been under the radar as of late as no one has been talking about him much with the likes of Shinsuke Nakamura and Eric Young in NXT. So does this mean we might get a future heel turn from Austin Aries here? I don’t know, but I am interested to see where Austin Aries goes from here as he is “The Greatest Man That Ever Lived”. Great backstage interview here.

We then get a vignette of Finn Balor as he will return to NXT next week since he lost the NXT Championship. I’m looking forward to see what Finn Balor does once he returns as I think he’s out for revenge on Samoa Joe for beating him last week for the NXT Championship. This was also a very well produced vignette here of Finn Balor as well as showing the feud between Finn Balor and Samoa Joe. This makes me hyped to see Finn Balor next week as it should be great. Great vignette here.

Eric Young Vs. Samoa Joe was a great match. Eric Young just made his NXT TV in-ring debut! Mark out moment! Wow, I didn’t expect Eric Young to wrestle on this show as I thought he would wrestle next week, but this was great to see. Love the new attire that Eric Young has, it looks great.

I love how Eric Young was being himself in this match being that “World Class Maniac” character as well as keeping his moveset from TNA. Very nice touch there. I also love the tease of Eric Young trying to do the piledriver onto Samoa Joe, but we know that he can’t do that move as that move is banned in WWE/NXT. However, the tease of that move was great though.

Samoa Joe was an absolute monster in this match as he dominated most of the match while giving Eric Young some good offense on him. Loving this aggressive side of Samoa Joe as Samoa Joe is at his best when he’s an aggressive, vicious, and dominant monster heel. More of this Samoa Joe please!

Like I said before, this was a great match as these two have battled each other in the past during their TNA days so it was not surprising to see them have a great match. However, I do wish that NXT has done something else with Eric Young and Samoa Joe as we have seen these two fight each other so let’s see something different for these two. Although, they never really have a feud against each other before so I’m all for that if that’s the case, but we’ll see.

Despite the great effort from Eric Young, Samoa Joe hit the Muscle Buster on Eric Young and made him tap out to the Coquina Clutch. After the match ended, Samoa Joe still had the Coquina Clutch onto Eric Young where he eventually let go of him. I could possibly see this in two directions. One, this sets up a future feud between Eric Young and Samoa Joe as there’s a history between them already as well as the finish could lead to Eric Young getting his revenge on Samoa Joe. Two, this was made to look Samoa Joe strong as NXT Champion as he gets ready to face Finn Balor in the near future for the NXT Championship.

Also, if anyone can answer this, but does Eric Young have a NXT contract? Let me them know in the comment sections below. Either way, even though Eric Young lost in his debut match, he looked great in defeat and Samoa Joe looked dominant as NXT Champion. Looking forward to see what these two are going to do going forward in NXT.

Great match and looking forward to see Samoa Joe’s reign as NXT Champion as well as what Eric Young does next in NXT.

Overall, great show that is building up characters as well as possibly building new feuds and storylines in the near future, and the debut of Eric Young. Next week, we’re going to get Shinsuke Nakamura Vs. Alex Riley and the return of Finn Balor which should be fun. Looking forward to it. NXT! NXT! NXT!
