NXT 5/3/17 Review: Women Getting Opportunites

Published

on

NXT on May 3, 2017 was a good show that is building up NXT Chicago in two weeks. Let’s break it down:

We start off the show with Danny Burch Vs. Killian Dain and it was a good match. Danny Burch has made another appearance on NXT! Mark out moment! Great to see Danny Burch on NXT again as I think he will be a part of the weekly WWE UK show on the WWE Network, but we’ll see.

Danny Burch did well in this match as he tried to make a name for himself in NXT. His front missile dropkick on Killian Dain was well executed. Killian Dain did well in this match too showcasing his agility in the ring. His running front dropkick on Danny Burch was beautifully executed. Good performances by both men here.

The ending of the match came when Killian Dain hit Danny Burch with the Ulster Plantation (One-handed electric chair driver) for the pin and win. A good win for Killian Dain as he’s looking to make a name for himself in NXT and in SAnitY.

Good match and I’m interested to see what’s next for Killian Dain and hope to see Danny Burch signed officially.

We then get a vignette of Velveteen Dream as the Velveteen Dream Experience will come to NXT soon. It seems like Patrick Clark got a new name, but he still has the same gimmick so I’m looking forward to his re-debut on NXT as I’m very interested to see what this gimmick can do.

Heavy Machinery Vs. Ricardo Watts & Hector Kunsman was a good tag team squash match. This was a good showcase for Heavy Machinery as they continue to make a statement in the NXT tag team division.

Ricardo Watts & Hector Kunsman didn’t get much offense in this match as Otis Dozovic had both Ricardo Watts & Hector Kunsman in a high-angle falling powerslam position as Tucker Knight hit a Lou Thesz Press on Otis Dozovic as Otis Dozovic hit Ricardo Watts & Hector Kunsman with the high-angle falling powerslam for the pin and win. A good win for Heavy Machinery as they look to make a statement in the NXT Tag Team division.

After the match, Heavy Machinery got on the mic as Tucker Knight said they like buffets and lifting weights as Otis Dozovic said shakes and weights. Tucker Knight then said that they want Authors of Pain and even though they haven’t faced them yet, they’re getting really hungry and it’s about time that they ate.

Pretty good promos from Heavy Machinery as they’re pretty good on the mic. It seems like Heavy Machinery want a shot at the NXT Tag Team Championships, but what will Authors of Pain say about that? I guess we’ll find out in the near future.

Good tag team squash match as I’m looking forward to seeing what’s next for Heavy Machinery in NXT.

We then see Bobby Roode talking to Kona Reeves as Kona Reeves is getting ready for his match against Hideo Itami later on the show. It seems like Bobby Roode has a game plan for Hideo Itami later on, but we’ll see what that game plan is.

Just a reminder that Judas by Fozzy is a theme for NXT Chicago and it’s a good song. NXT Chicago is in two weeks and I can’t wait to see it. Should be a great show.

The backstage interview with #DIY by Kayla Braxton was good. #DIY agreed that Heavy Machinery have the size to match Authors of Pain, but they never won the titles before while they have and they haven’t forgotten a championship rematch that is owed to them. They then said that they’re fine with Heavy Machinery wanting a shot for the NXT Tag Team Championships, but the line starts behind them.

It seems like #DIY wants that two on two rematch with Authors of Pain for the NXT Tag Team Championships so I’m looking forward to the match between the two teams in the future if it does happen. I wonder if we will get a #1 Contender’s match between #DIY and Heavy Machinery. I guess we’ll soon see. Good backstage interview here.

Hideo Itami Vs. Kona Reeves was a good squash match. Hideo Itami has made his in-ring return to NXT! Mark out moment! It’s great to see Hideo Itami back in the ring and hopefully this time, he won’t injured himself again.

Kona Reeves did well in this match as he was trying to make a statement on Hideo Itami. I like how he attacked Hideo Itami right before the bell rang as he probably listened to the advice that Bobby Roode gave him backstage earlier in the show so that was nice to see. Hideo Itami did well in this match too as he showed that he still has it in the ring. His running dropkick to the corner on Kona Reeves when he was down was well executed. Good performances by both men here.

The ending of the match came when Hideo Itami hit a Go To Sleep on Kona Reeves for the pin and win. A good win for Hideo Itami as he’s sending a message to Bobby Roode.

Good match and I’m interested to see when Hideo Itami will face Bobby Roode for the NXT Championship.

We then get a video package of Drew McIntyre and it was good. This was a good way to build up Drew McIntyre as I expect him to be a big player in NXT in the near future. Well produced video package here.

We then get a vignette of Roderick Strong called Who is Roderick Strong? Part 2 and it was great. We once again see footage of him wrestling and working out as well talking about his time in the independent circuit and ROH before he came to NXT. We also see Roderick Strong and his wife getting ready for their new born baby as Roderick Strong said he’s thankful for his wife and child because now, he has something to fight for and he’s doing it for his family.

Once again, this is really great as it shows who Roderick Strong is as a character and his motives for wrestling which makes you empathize with him as it makes you want to cheer and root for him. I’m expecting a big push for Roderick Strong in NXT and he kind of deserves it because he did work hard to get where he is today so I’m looking forward to what NXT does with him in the near future. Great vignette here.

The backstage segment with Bobby Roode, Roderick Strong, and William Regal was good. Bobby Roode was approaching William Regal in his office to discuss about Hideo Itami as Bobby Roode thinks that he’s not ready for a title shot. William Regal agreed with Bobby Roode and decided to book a match between Hideo Itami and Roderick Strong next week to determine who will face Bobby Roode for the NXT Championship at NXT Chicago. As Bobby Roode was about to leave, Roderick Strong came in as both men stared at each other as Bobby Roode left.

So we’re getting Hideo Itami Vs. Roderick Strong in a #1 Contender’s match next week? Awesome. That should be an awesome match when it happens and I’m looking forward to it. Also, it seems like they’re also teasing an eventual Roderick Strong and Bobby Roode feud so if that happens, I would love to see it as I think it will benefit both men. Good backstage segment here.

We then get an announcement that next week, Aleister Black will be in action. I like how NXT is making a big deal out of Aleister Black which is great to see as I think Aleister Black can be a huge star for NXT in the near future.

Ember Moon Vs. Ruby Riot Vs. Liv Morgan Vs. Kimberly Frankele Vs. Candice LeRae Vs. Sarah Bridges Vs. Rachel Evers Vs. Bianca Blair Vs. Victoria Gonzalez Vs. Sonya Deville Vs. Aliyah Vs. Nikki Cross Vs. Billie Kay Vs. Peyton Royce Vs. Lacey Evans in a #1 Contender’s Battle Royal for the NXT Women’s Championship was a fun match. Oh my god, Candice LeRae has made an appearance on NXT and Rachel Evers has made another appearance on NXT! Mark out moment for both!

For those of you who don’t know, Candice LeRae is one of the best women’s wrestlers in the world who is known for her time in SHIMMER so seeing her here was great and seeing Rachel Evers or Rachael Ellering here again was great to see as well. I wonder if they’re going to be in that Women’s Tournament in the WWE Network in the future, but either way, it’s great to see them regardless. Anyway, I will break this match into parts in terms of eliminations so let’s get to it.

The first elimination came when The Iconic Duo executed a double spin kick to Victoria Gonzalez that knocked her off the ring apron to get her eliminated from the match. Victoria Gonzalez does have some potential in her with her being that big monster heel that could fill the void that Nia Jax left in NXT, but I need to see more of her to make my judgment on that.

The second elimination came when The Iconic Duo eliminated Bianca Blair. Bianca Blair is a woman that also has potential as she seems to very athletic from what I have seen from her and she can delivered a good looking 450 splash, but I need to see more of her before I give more judgement.

The third elimination came when Aliyah lifted Rachel Evers up and over the top rope where she charged at Rachel Evers which made her fall off the ring apron to get her eliminated. Wish they have Rachel Evers do more, but it is what it is. However, it did get Aliyah some heat even though she’s a babyface. Maybe NXT should turn her heel because of this, but we’ll see.

The fourth elimination came when Sonya Deville and Lacey Evans flipped Sarah Bridges over the top rope as Liv Morgan hit a dropkick onto Sarah Bridges as he falls off the ring apron to get her eliminated. Cool to see Sarah Bridges or Crazy Mary Dobson here and was hoping to see more of her, but it is what it is. It seems like she got a new character too so I’m interested to see how that will play out and hopefully we will see it in the future.

The fifth and sixth elimination came when Peyton Royce flipped Sonya Deville and Lacey Evans over the top rope to get them eliminated. Wow, The Iconic Duo are on a roll in this match as they have eliminated four people in this match thus far. Plus, we got some tension between Sonya Deville and Lacey Evans as they argue with each other after the elimination so maybe something will happen here, but we’ll see.

The seventh elimination came when Ruby Riot hit a headscissors to Kimberly Frankele over the top rope to get her eliminated. Man, was hoping that Kimberly Frankele does more in the match, but it is what it is. She’ll get her time.

The eighth elimination came when Billie Kay hit a big boot on Candice LeRae which knocked her off the ring apron to get her eliminated. I wished Candice LeRae did more here, but it is what it is unfortunately and hopefully, we will get to see her again in NXT in the future. Also, The Iconic Duo got some great heat for this so good for them.

The ninth elimination came when Nikki Cross eliminated Aliyah. Man, the crowd really must hate Aliyah as the crowd was chanting thank you Nikki and Nikki Cross is a heel. Maybe NXT should turn Aliyah heel and why not do it to go with the crowd reaction. Hopefully they will do it because that would probably give Aliyah a character of some kind in which she probably needs so NXT, do it.

The tenth elimination came when Nikki Cross was wrestling Liv Morgan’s fingers open and that sent her tumbling out to her eliminated. Liv Morgan did well in this match so she had nothing to be ashamed of while Nikki Cross continued to look good.

The eleventh elimination came when Ember Moon delivered a superkick on Billie Kay which knocked her off the ring apron to get her eliminated. Even though Billie Kay got eliminated here, The Iconic Duo got the most eliminations in this match so it was nothing to be ashamed of.

The twelfth elimination came when Ember Moon grasped Peyton Royce by the neck and slowly forcing her to the floor by pulling her down to get her eliminated. Just like with Billie Kay, The Iconic Duo got the most eliminations in this match so they got props for that even though they lost.

The match between Ember Moon, Ruby Riot, and Nikki Cross was fun to watch as all three women went out there to try to become the #1 Contender for the NXT Women’s Championship at NXT Chicago. The Final Eclipse (Diving corkscrew stunner) that Ember Moon did on Nikki Cross was cool to see. Great effort from all three women here.

However, there was no decisive winner in this match as Asuka came in as she sent Ember Moon flying directly out of the ring through the ropes into the barricade. Asuka then hit a spinning heel kick on Ruby Riot and a diving kick on Nikki Cross’ face. Asuka then yelled nobody is ready for her as she left the ring while Nikki Cross was laughing at Ember Moon for getting hurt from Asuka.

William Regal then came out and announced that at NXT Chicago, it will be Asuka Vs. Ember Moon Vs. Ruby Riot Vs. Nikki Cross in a four way match for the NXT Women’s Championship.

Wow, didn’t expect Asuka to come in and ruined the battle royal, but I pretty sure this signifies the heel turn of Asuka as she got more boos than usual for doing this. Not only that, I was expecting Asuka Vs. Ember Moon for the NXT Women’s Championship and Ruby Riot Vs. Nikki Cross at NXT Chicago, but I guess this is not the case. Oh well, this should be an awesome match and also, poor Ember Moon. Hope she’s okay after that fall she took from Asuka, it looked nasty.

Fun battle royal and good post-match as I’m looking forward to Asuka Vs. Ember Moon Vs. Ruby Riot Vs. Nikki Cross at NXT Chicago for the NXT Women’s Championship.

Overall, good show that is building up NXT Chicago in two weeks. Next week, we are going to have Aleister Black in action and Hideo Itami Vs. Roderick Strong in a #1 Contender’s match for the NXT Championship at NXT Chicago which should be interesting to see. Looking forward to it. NXT! NXT! NXT!
