NXT 5/10/17 Review: The Strong Goes to Sleep

Published

on

NXT on May 10, 2017 was a good show that is building up NXT Chicago next week. Let’s break it down:

We start off the show with a video package hyping up Hideo Itami Vs. Roderick Strong in a #1 Contender’s match where the winner will face Bobby Roode for the NXT Championship at NXT Chicago. This is good as it helps build up the main event between Hideo Itami and Roderick Strong later on the show. Well produced video package here.

Aleister Black Vs. Cezar Bononi was a good match. Ever since Aleister Black came to NXT, he has been on a tear as of late and he continued that with this match against Cezar Bononi.

Cezar Bononi got some surprising offense in this match as he hit Aleister Black with an inverted atomic drop followed by a dropkick which was impressive to watch. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to take down Aleister Black as Aleister Black finished off Cezar Bononi with a spin kick for the pin and win. Aleister Black continues to dominate in NXT and I’m interested to see what’s next for Aleister Black. Fade to black!

Good match and I’m interested to see what’s next for Aleister Black in NXT.

We then get highlights of the #1 Contender’s Battle Royal for the NXT Women’s Championship where Asuka interfered in the match which led to William Regal announcing at NXT Chicago, it will be Asuka Vs. Ember Moon Vs. Riby Riot Vs. Nikki Cross for the NXT Women’s Championship and we saw William Regal backstage with Asuka as he told her that she will facing Ember Moon, Ruby Riot, and Nikki Cross at NXT Chicago where Asuka looked scared. This is good as it showed what happened last week and how Asuka reacted to the match as it also ties in to the next segment in which I will talk about next.

We then get to see Ember Moon getting an arm sling after Asuka threw Ember Moon to the barricade as she will be out of action for four to five weeks with a shoulder sprain. Ember Moon then said that she won’t be at NXT Chicago, but when she gets back, she’ll be back better than ever.

It’s a shame that Ember Moon got injured and I wish her a speedy recovery. As a result, at NXT Chicago, it will be Asuka Vs. Ruby Riot Vs. Nikki Cross for the NXT Women’s Championship which will still be a great match regardless as I think Asuka will retain the NXT Women’s Championship, but we’ll see.

Just a reminder that NXT is coming back to the UK this June for the Download Festival so get your tickets now before it’s too late and see NXT live!

Just a reminder that Over-Throne by Hacktivist is a theme for NXT Chicago and it’s a good song. NXT Chicago is next week and I can’t wait to see it. Should be a great show.

We then get an announcement at NXT Chicago, it will be Tyler Bate Vs. Pete Dunne for the WWE United Kingdom Championship! Mark out moment! Awesome news as I think that should be an excellent match between the two as their match at the WWE United Kingdom Championship Tournament was excellent so I’m looking forward to that match. Can’t wait.

We then get a vignette about Pete Dunne and it was good. It was basically his WWE United Kingdom Championship Tournament vignette with some extra footage, but this is a good way to introduce fans on who Pete Dunne is so I appreciated that. Looking forward to his match with Tyler Bate at NXT Chicago.

We then get a video package about Ruby Riot and it was good. Ruby Riot talked about her tattoos and what those tattos represent as they represent her story in life and what she has to overcome to get where she is today. She then talked about the sacrifices that she made in her wrestling career to get to NXT and in the end, it was all worth it for her as she finally made her dream come true.

This is good as they showed who Ruby Riot is as a character and her motives for wrestling which makes you want to root and support her. A nice way to help build up Ruby Riot who is probably going to make a name for herself in NXT in the near future. Well produec video package here.

The backstage interview with Nikki Cross was good even though there wasn’t really one. Nikki Cross was about to be interviewed, but she ended attacking the guy who tried to clip the mic on her. She then started playing with the boom mic above her as the crew tried to ask her about her match at NXT Chicago. Nikki Cross then started yelling out Asuka’s name and then threw her chair down. She then walked towards the camera and asked where the NXT Women’s Championship and the screen went to black.

This was a very interesting way to show the character of Nikki Cross and how she feels about the NXT Women’s Championship at NXT Chicago. It should be a great one and I’m looking forward to it. Good backstage interview here even though there wasn’t really one.

The backstage segment between Drew McIntyre and Wesley Blake by Kayla Braxton was good. Kayla Braxton asked Drew McIntyre about the #1 Contender’s match later on the show where he said that it will be a great match even though he’s not in it. However, he learned that if something is not happening for you, you make it happen which led to Wesley Blake interrupting him! Mark out moment! Haven’t seen Wesley Blake for quite a while so it’s great to see him back. Wesley Blake told Drew McIntyre that if anyone knows about second chances, it’s him as Drew McIntyre intimidated to leave.

It seems like we got ourselves a feud or a future match between Drew McIntyre and Wesley Blake which sounds good to me as it gives both men something to do. Looking forward to the match between the two when it happens. Good backstage segment here.

We then get another vignette of Velveteen Dream where he is coming to NXT soon. It’s the same vignette we got last time, but I’m excited for the re-debut of Patrick Clark being as Velveteen Dream. Looking forward to it.

#DIY Vs. God Gifted Athletes was a good tag team match. #DIY came out to cut a promo that they never had a fair one-on-one championship rematch against Authors of Pain and that line starts behind them. This led to God Gifted Athletes to come out as they said it’s not about big giants as the line starts behind them, not #DIY. Tommaso Ciampa then said that if there was a line, they have crossed it as #DIY and God Gifted Athletes which led to a match between the two teams. Nice to see God Gifted Athletes to get some time as they are a tag team that has potential. Nice way to lead to this match.

God Gifted Athletes did well in this match as they’re trying to make a statement in the NXT tag team division. Tino Sabbatelli‘s dropkick on Tommaso Ciampa and Riddick Moss‘ running back elbow on Tommaso Ciampa were quite impressive. #DIY did well in this match too as they’re looking to get their rematch against Authors of Pain for the NXT Tag Team Championships. The suicide dive by Johnny Gargano on Riddick Moss was beautifully executed and Tommaso Ciampa’s running knee drop on the apron to the floor on Tino Sabbatelli looked devastating. Good performances by both teams here.

The ending of the match came when #DIY hit the superkick/running knee strike to the back of the head on Riddick Moss for the pin and win. A good win for #DIY as they look to regain the NXT Tag Team Championships. Do It Yourself!

After the match, William Regal came out and congratulated #DIY for their victory as there’s only one team that could face Authors of Pain for the NXT Tag Team Championships. This led to Paul Ellering and Authors of Pain coming out as Paul Ellering said that his team will end #DIY.

William Regal then said that he’s willing to take that chance as Paul Ellering said that it’s on him where William Regal announced at NXT Chicago, it will be Authors of Pain Vs. #DIY for the NXT Tag Team Championships in a ladder match! Mark out moment! This will be the third ladder match in NXT history as the previous two were great to excellent so I’m looking forward to this match. Nice next tag team title match and I can’t wait.

Good tag team match and great post-match as I’m looking forward to Authors of Pain Vs. #DIY in a ladder match for the NXT Tag Team Championships at NXT Chicago.

The backstage segment with Kassius Ohno and Andrade “Cien” Almas by Kayla Braxton was good. Kassius Ohno talked about how he fell down against Bobby Roode and he fell down three years ago when he got released, but he’s working hard to build himself back up. He then listed a few names who have made an impact in NXT which led to Andrade “Cien” Almas showing up.

Kassius Ohno called out Andrade “Cien” Almas for squandering his opportunities and caring more about what happens after the match with himself partying instead of the actual match itself. Kassius Ohno then challenged Andrade “Cien” Almas to a match next week where Andrade “Cien” Almas accepted the match.

This is a way to build up a match or a possible feud between the two men next week so I’m looking forward to that match next week even though both men needs a win at the moment so we’ll see how it turns out. Good backstage segment here.

Just a reminder that Judas by Fozzy is a theme for NXT Chicago and it’s a good song. NXT Chicago is next week and I can’t wait to see it. Should be a great show.

We then get a vignette about Tyler Bate and it was good. It was basically his WWE United Kingdom Championship Tournament vignette with some extra footage, but this is a good way to introduce fans on who Tyler Bate is so I appreciated that. Looking forward to his match with Pete Dunne at NXT Chicago.

The backstage interview with Roderick Strong by Christy St. Cloud was good. Christy St. Cloud asked Roderick Strong about his mindset as Roderick Strong said that this is why he’s here and it’s time as he headed out to the ring with his music came on.

It seems like Roderick Strong is ready for Hideo Itami coming up next in this #1 Contender’s match for the NXT Championship. Looking forward to it. Good backstage interview here.

The backstage interview with Hideo Itami by Christy St. Cloud was good. Christy St. Cloud asked Hideo Itami about his match against Roderick Strong as Hideo Itami said that Roderick Strong is great, but he’s going to sleep as he headed out to the ring with his music came on.

Just like Roderick Strong, it seems like Hideo Itami is also ready for the #1 Contender’s match coming up next so let’s get to it! Good backstage interview here.

Hideo Itami Vs. Roderick Strong in a #1 Contender’s match for the NXT Championship was an excellent match. Mark out moment! These two men went out there and delivered an excellent match where neither man looked weak in the process as it was even between both men.

Roderick Strong did excellent in this match as he wants to be the #1 Contender for the NXT Championship. His pumphandle transitioned into a backbreaker was well executed. His backbreaker on Hideo Itami looked painful as heck. His Olympic Slam on Hideo Itami was beautifully executed. The way Roderick Strong caught Hideo Itami when he was doing the running dropkick to the corner into a backbreaker and his jumping knee to Hideo Itami were awesome to see. Excellent performance from Roderick Strong here.

Hideo Itami also did excellent in this match as he also wants to be the #1 Contender for the NXT Championship. His sitout suplex slam on Roderick Strong from the second rope was beautifully executed and his single leg dropkick on Roderick Strong looked devastating as well. Excellent performance from Hideo Itami here.

The ending of the match came when Hideo Itami hit a Go To Sleep on Roderick Strong for the pin and win. A great win for Hideo Itami as he is now the #1 Contender for the NXT Championship at NXT Chicago.

After the match, Hideo Itami helped Roderick Strong get up to his feet as he raised his hand in the ring as Roderick Strong showed respect towards Hideo Itami as Hideo Itami left the ring as Roderick Strong stood in the ring getting applause from the crowd.

Even though Roderick Strong lost this match, he looked excellent in defeat so he has nothing to be ashamed of and I expect him to get a push in NXT in the near future because of this. It made sense for Hideo Itami to win this match and I’m looking forward to Bobby Roode Vs. Hideo Itami for the NXT Championship at NXT Chicago. It should be great.

Excellent match as I’m looking forward to Bobby Roode Vs. Hideo Itami at NXT Chicago for the NXT Championship.

Overall, good show that is building up NXT Chicago next week. Next week, we are going to have Kassius Ohno Vs. Andrade “Cien” Almas which should be interesting to see. Looking forward to it. NXT! NXT! NXT!
