NXT 5/17/17 Review: Will The Glorious Go To Sleep?

NXT on May 17, 2017 was a good show that is building up NXT Chicago this week. Let’s break it down:

We start off the show with Bobby Roode heading to Full Sail University as he told his assistant to hurry up and come with me as they head to the arena. This is good as it shows that Bobby Roode is here so that’s good and man, poor assistant. Interesting way to start off the show.

Drew McIntyre Vs. Sean Maluta was a good match. Sean Maluta has made another appearance in NXT! Mark out moment! Great to see Sean Maluta back in NXT again. I really hope NXT signs him because the man has a lot of potential.

Sean Maluta did get some offense in this match with his chops, but Drew McIntyre got the better of him where he even busted his eye out where I hope he’s okay as he finished off Sean Maluta with a running sinlge leg dropkick for the pin and win. A good win for Drew McIntyre as he’s looking to re-brand himself in NXT.

After the match, Kayla Braxton came up the ramp and interviewed Drew McIntyre about what happened between him and Wesley Blake last week where Drew McIntyre said that he’s not concerned with Wesley Blake, but if Wesley Blake wants a little attention, he can get in the ring next week as he left.

It seems like Drew McIntyre means business here as he took out Sean Maluta with a bloody eye. I don’t know if Wesley Blake made the right decision on messing with Drew McIntyre, but the match between those two possibly should be good so I’m looking forward to it.

Good match and I’m looking forward to the possible match between Drew McIntyre and Wesley Blake next week. Also, NXT, please sign Sean Maluta!

We then get a recap of what happened last week where Hideo Itami defeated Roderick Strong in a #1 Contender’s match and after the match, SAnitY attacked Roderick Strong where Killian Dain hit Roderick Strong with the Ulster Plantation (One-handed electric chair driver) and Eric Young hit a wheelbarrow position transitioned into an elevated neckbreaker on Roderick Strong as SAnitY stood tall. This is good as it shows what happened last week and it also ties into the next segment which we will talk about next.

The backstage segment between Roderick Strong and William Regal last week was good. Roderick Strong was backstage selling the attack from SAnitY as William Regal checked on Roderick Strong as he walked backstage. Roderick Strong then said that he wants SAnitY and William Regal gave it to him.

I don’t blame Roderick Strong for wanting SAnitY, but I don’t think going against all of SAnitY is a wise move. It will be interesting to see how SAnitY which we will talk about next. Good backstage segment here.

The promo that Eric Young cut in the parking lot was good. Eric Young and the rest of SAnitY were in the parking lot at night as Eric Young said that they don’t normally take requests, but if Roderick Strong wants a fight, he’ll give it to him at NXT Chicago. Nikki Cross then chuckled as SAnitY stared into the camera.

It seems like Eric Young is going to give Roderick Strong what he wants at NXT Chicago. It should be a great match among the two and I’m looking forward to it at NXT Chicago. Good promo here.

We then get a video package for Hideo Itami looking back on his debut in NXT back in NXT Takeover II where William Regal introduced him to Full Sail University for the first time. This is good as it shows how far Hideo Itami has come since his debut in NXT so I’m looking forward to his match against Bobby Roode at NXT Chicago. Good video package here.

We then get highlights of the WWE United Kingdom Championship Tournament as they’re hyping up Tyler Bate Vs. Pete Dunne at NXT Chicago. Tyler Bate talked about how he’s now twenty years old and now he feels like he’s going to make the WWE United Kingdom Championship a lot more by defending it across the globe. Pete Dunne talked about how he will do whatever it takes to become WWE United Kingdom Champion. Tyler Bate talked about how he’s excited to compete at NXT Chicago while Pete Dunne said that Tyler Bate being WWE United Kingdom Champion is a dream as he’s going to take that title away from him. Tyler Bate then said that he beat Pete Dunne once and he’ll do it again at NXT Chicago.

This is good as it helps hype up their match at NXT Chicago which should be excellent. Well produced video package here.

We then get another vignette of Velveteen Dream where he is coming to NXT soon. It’s the same vignette we got last time, but I’m excited for the re-debut of Patrick Clark being as Velveteen Dream. Looking forward to it.

We then get another video package for Hideo Itami looking back on his match against Tyler Breeze at NXT San Jose on March 27, 2015 as he hits the GTS (Go To Sleep). This is good as it shows what Hideo Itami has done in NXT in the past to help build up to his match against Bobby Roode for the NXT Championship at NXT Chicago. Good video package here.

Just a reminder that Judas by Fozzy is a theme for NXT Chicago and it’s a good song. NXT Chicago is this week and I can’t wait to see it. Should be a great show.

The interview with Asuka in a car was good even though there was no interview. Asuka was being interviewed about her match against Ruby Riot and Nikki Cross at NXT Chicago in a car as she didn’t answer any of the questions that the interviewer asked her. She then left the car and interacted with the fans outside of Full Sail University as she headed to the arena.

Once again, Asuka feeling very confident for her match against Ruby Riot and Nikki Cross at NXT Chicago and I don’t blame as she has been dominant as of late. However, it might bite her soon and it might happen at NXT Chicago. Looking forward to the triple threat match at NXT Chicago. Should be great. Good interview even though there wasn’t really an interview here.

Sonya Deville Vs. Lacey Evans was a solid women’s match. Both women did alright for themselves as they’re looking to prove their worth in the NXT Women’s division.

Lacey Evans did well in this match as she tried to make a statement in the NXT Women’s division. Her neckbreaker on Sonya Deville was well executed. Sonya Deville did well in this match too as she was trying to make her mark in the NXT Women’s division. Her strikes in this match were devastating. Solid performances by both women here.

The ending of the match came when Sonya Deville hit a standing shining wizard on Lacey Evans for the pin and win. A good win for Sonya Deville, but I feel like she needs more training along with Lacey Evans.

Solid women’s match and I’m interested to see what’s next for Sonya Deville and Lacey Evans in NXT.

We then get a recap of what happened last month when Hideo Itami interrupted Bobby Roode and hit him with a Go To Sleep. A good way to build up the feud between Bobby Roode and Hideo Itami at NXT Chicago for the NXT Championship which should be a great match. Looking forward to it.

Just a reminder that Over-Throne by Hacktivist is a theme for NXT Chicago and it’s a good song. NXT Chicago is this week and I can’t wait to see it. Should be a great show.

Kassius Ohno Vs. Andrade “Cien” Almas was an excellent match. Mark out moment! After the confrontation they had last week, it led to this match where both men looked excellent in the process.

Andrade “Cien” Almas did excellent in this match to showed that he’s not all about the partying. His slaps and his running double knees to the corner on Kassius Ohno looked devastating. His cartwheel backflip kick on Kassius Ohno was cool to see and his spinning reverse Tornado DDT on Kassius Ohno was well executed. Excellent performance from Kassius Ohno here.

Kassius Ohno did excellent in this match too as he was trying to teach Andrade “Cien” Almas about taking opportunities. His discus bicycle kicks to Andrade “Cien” Almas as well as his strikes looked devastating. Excellent performance from Kassius Ohno here.

The ending of the match came when Kassius Ohno hit two discus elbow smashes on Andrade “Cien” Almas for the pin and win. A great win for Kassius Ohno, but dang it, I’m getting sick and tired of Andrade “Cien” Almas losing the big matches and he needs to win one dang it! Hopefully, it will come for him soon. When you see Kassius coming, you say Ohno!

Excellent match and I’m interested to see what’s next for Kassius Ohno and Andrade “Cien” Almas in NXT.

We then get an announcement that next week, we will get Drew McIntyre Vs. Wesley Blake and Aleister Black will be in action. Looking forward to seeing them next week even though I feel like Drew McIntyre and Aleister Black should have been on the NXT Chicago card, but better than nothing. Looking forward to it.

We then get a recap of Hideo Itami defeating Roderick Strong last week to become the #1 Contender for the NXT Championship against Bobby Roode at NXT Chicago. This is good as it shows how Hideo Itami became the #1 Contender for the NXT Championship at NXT Chicago. Looking forward to their match at NXT Chicago, should be great.

The segment between Bobby Roode and Hideo Itami was good. Bobby Roode made his way to the ring with a suit as he wiped his shoes off on the apron and entered the ring with the NXT Championship over his shoulder.

Bobby Roode then grabbed a mic and talked about wherever he goes, everyone is talking about Hideo Itami and the Go To Sleep. He then talked about how that Hideo Itami has knocked people out with the Go To Sleep including himself where he admit it.

Bobby Roode then mentioned that was minding his own business and that it will never happen again. He then said that at NXT Chicago, he’ll do what he does every single night which is to win. He then compared the track records between him and Hideo Itami. He said that he has done so much to improve NXT while Hideo Itami simply has not. He then said that Hideo Itami will have to fly home to tell his kids that their father has failed once again.

Hideo Itami then came out as William Regal and security tried to stop him. Bobby Roode took off his suit jacket and rolled up his sleeves as he waited for Hideo Itami to come into the ring. Hideo Itami then passed through security to beat up Bobby Roode in the ring. Hideo Itami then beat up the security guards with the Go To Sleep on two security guards.

Bobby Roode then watched in shock at ringside as Hideo Itami was about to beat up the third security guard until Bobby Roode hit a clothesline on Hideo Itami from behind. However, Hideo Itami then hit a Go To Sleep on Bobby Roode to knock him out as he stood tall over Bobby Roode.

It seems like Hideo Itami has gotten Bobby Roode’s number as he got the upper hand on him twice now. Even though I don’t think Hideo Itami will win the NXT Championship at NXT Chicago, he does have a pretty good chance to do so and I’m looking forward to it which should be great.

Good segment as I’m looking forward to Bobby Roode Vs. Hideo Itami at NXT Chicago for the NXT Championship.

Overall, good show that is building up NXT Chicago this week. Next week, we are going to have Drew McIntyre Vs. Wesley Blake, Aleister Black will be in action, and the fallout of NXT Chicago which should be interesting to see. Looking forward to it. NXT! NXT! NXT!
