NXT 5/24/17 Review: The Velveteen Dream

Published

on

NXT on May 24, 2017 was a good show that is building up characters as well as possibly building new feuds and storylines in the near future. Let’s break it down:

We start off the show with a video package showing highlights of NXT Chicago. This is good as it shows what happened at NXT Chicago for those who have missed it so if you haven’t already, please watch the show as it’s worth your time. Well produced video package here.

Aleister Black Vs. Curt Hawkins was a good match. Curt Hawkins has made a return to NXT for one night only! Mark out moment! Great to see Curt Hawkins back for one day as the last time we saw Curt Hawkins back in NXT was in 2014 so that was a nice touch. Not only that, we also got a recap of what happened on WWE Main Event two weeks ago when Aleister Black beat Curt Hawkins so this is a rematch between the two.

Curt Hawkins did get some offense in this match, but it wasn’t enough as Aleister Black finished Curt Hawkins off with a spin kick for the pin and win. Aleister Black continues to win and it’s only a matter of time before he becomes #1 Contender for the NXT Championship. Fade to black!

Good match and I’m interested to see what’s next for Aleister Black in NXT.

We then see highlights of the NXT Tag Team Championship Ladder match at NXT Chicago and when Tommaso Ciampa turned on Johnny Gargano where the doctors refuse to release any medical updates on Johnny Gargano’s condition as we see him being taken in an ambulance. After that brutal assault from Tommaso Ciampa on Johnny Gargano, I don’t think we’re going to see Johnny Gargano in NXT for a while. It will be interesting to see how this feud will develop.

The promo that Ember Moon cut in the stands at the Allstate Arena at NXT Chicago was good. Ember Moon talked about how she was supposed to be competing for the NXT Women’s Championship and it’s unfortunate that she had to be watching the match on the stands instead. Ember Moon wanted Asuka to retain so she can be the one to beat her as she said time heals all wounds, but battle scars last forever.

It seems like Ember Moon still has some unfinished business with Asuka and once Ember Moon is recovered, she is looking to get that NXT Women’s Championship. Looking forward to the rematch between Asuka and Ember Moon for the NXT Women’s Championship when it happens. Good promo here.

We then see highlights of the NXT Women’s Championship Triple Threat match at NXT Chicago which was a great women’s match. This also ties in to the next segment which I will talk about next.

The backstage interview with Asuka by Kayla Braxton at NXT Chicago was good. Kayla Braxton asked Asuka what’s next for her and Asuka replied by saying that no one can stand toe to toe with her and this title is all hers.

At this point, Asuka has been a dominant force in NXT and I still question who can stop her, but I still think that Ember Moon will be the one who will take that title from her and it will probably happen at NXT Brooklyn III, but we’ll see. Good backstage interview here.

We then see highlights of Roderick Strong Vs. Eric Young at NXT Chicago which was also a great match. This also ties in to the next segment which I will talk about next.

The backstage interview with Roderick Strong by Kayla Braxton was good. Kayla Braxton asked Roderick Strong on how does he feel about being the first person to pin Eric Young in NXT ever since he became a full-time member of the NXT roster where Roderick Strong replied by saying that overcoming the odds is something that he done his whole life, but once his family is being involved, there’s nothing that will stop him as this is one step closer towards the NXT Championsip.

It seems like Roderick Strong wants that NXT Championship and I expect him to be the next #1 Contender for the NXT Championship after his match with Eric Young, but we’ll see how it goes. Good backstage interview here.

Robert Anthony Vs. The Velveteen Dream was a good squash match. The Velveteen Dream has made his re-debut in NXT! Mark out moment! Not only that, Robert Anthony has made an appearance on NXT! Mark out moment! Robert Anthony is the current CZW World Champion so seeing him here on this show was cool to see and I hope he gets signed as he’s a talented individual.

Unfortunately, Robert Anthony didn’t get much offense in this match as The Velveteen Dream finished Robert Anthony off with the diving elbow drop for the pin and win. A good re-debut of The Velveteen Dream as the gimmick is interesting and it has a lot of potential. We’ll see how it goes.

Good squash match and I’m interested to see what’s next for The Velveteen Dream. Also, NXT, please sign Robert Anthony!

We then see highlights of the WWE United Kingdom Championship match which was an excellent match so I recommend watching this on the WWE Network if you can as it was amazing. Not only that, it also ties in to the next segment which I will talk about next.

The backstage interview with Pete Dunne by Kayla Braxton at NXT Chicago was good. Kayla Braxton asked Pete Dunne on how does he feel about becoming the WWE United Kingdom Champion where Pete Dunne replied by saying that he had to watch Tyler Bate carrying the championship since January, knowing that it was his and now it is.

Pete Dunne is going to be a great WWE United Kingdom Champion and I hope to see the UK division more in NXT in case they don’t get their own show on the WWE Network on a weekly or a monthly basis. Good backstage interview here.

We then see highlights of the NXT Championship match at NXT Chicago which was another excellent match where I recommend checking it out on the WWE Network if you can. Plus, it also ties in to the next segment which I will talk about next.

The backstage interview with Bobby Roode by Kayla Braxton at NXT Chicago was good. Kayla Braxton told Bobby Roode that he defeated Hideo Itami to retain the NXT Championship as Bobby Roode responded by saying to her that she sounded surprised of him winning. He then talked about how he didn’t realize that Hideo Itami was still in NXT and he found out that he wasn’t in his league.

He then talked about what’s next for him and he said that, for now, he’s going to enjoy some time off by his pool and his NXT will continue to be glorious.

Bobby Roode seemed confident that no one is ready for him as of right now, but I wouldn’t be celebrating just yet Bobby Roode as you have tons of contenders waiting to get that shot for your belt. My guess would be Roderick Strong, but we’ll have to wait and see. Good backstage interview here.

We then get an announcement that next week, Bobby Roode will have a Glorious Celebration. I guess Bobby Roode wants to continue celebrating his win at NXT Chicago and it will be interesting to see what happens then. Looking forward to it.

Drew McIntyre Vs. Wesley Blake was a great match. Wesley Blake has made his in-ring return to NXT! Mark out moment! It felt like forever the last we see Wesley Blake in the ring so it’s great to see him back and he got a new gimmick too which is the gimmick that he is using at NXT house shows as of right now so I’m interested to see how that will turn out.

Wesley Blake did great in this match as he was trying to teach Drew McIntyre about respect. The way he worked on Drew McIntyre’s left arm throughout the match was great in-ring psychology and his double knee armbreaker on Drew McIntyre was well executed. Drew McIntyre did great in this match too as he tried to teach Wesley Blake about taking opportunities. His big boot to Wesley Blake looked devastating. Not only that, his reverse double leg slam and headbutt to Wesley Blake looked painful as heck. Great performances by both men here.

The ending of the match came when Drew McIntyre hit the single leg dropkick on Wesley Blake for the pin and win. A good win for Drew McIntyre as he’s looking to climb up the ranks of the NXT Championship picture.

Great match and I’m interested to see what’s next for Drew McIntyre and Wesley Blake in NXT.

Overall, good show that is building up characters as well as possibly building new feuds and storylines in the near future. Next week, we are going to have Bobby Roode’s Glorious Celebration which should be interesting to see. Looking forward to it. NXT! NXT! NXT!
