Lucha Underground on July 12, 2017 was a great show that helps build up storylines and feuds in the future as well as building up new characters. Let’s break it down:

We start off the show with a recap of what happened between Dario Cueto, Sexy Star, Fenix, Melissa Santos, Marty Martinez, Texano and Famous B earlier in the season of Lucha Underground Season 3. This is a good way to remind people about what happened during that time in case they missed it or forgot about it because since they have been on a long break, it’s good to refresh people’s minds heading into this show so I appreciated that. Well done and well produced.

Jeremiah Crane Vs. Taya in the round of sixteen of the Cueto Cup was a great match. Both of these competitors were very even in this match where neither competitor looked weak in the process.

Taya hit a diving crossbody on Jeremiah Crane from the bleachers to the floor! Mark out moment! No matter how many times I see it, I still can’t believe it and a woman was doing it too so props for Taya for doing that spot. Jeremiah Crane did that running cannonball on Taya through the chairs at ringside which was cool to see as well. Great work from both competitors here.

The ending of the match came when Taya was about to finish Jeremiah Crane off, but Sexy Star came from the crowd to distract Taya as Jeremiah Crane took advantage by hitting a powerbomb on Taya on the turnbuckle followed by a bicycle kick and finished Taya off with the double underhook piledriver for the pin and win. With this win, Jeremiah Crane moves on to the quarter-finals of the Cueto Cup.

After the match, Sexy Star came in the ring and laid out Taya with brass knuckles and left the ring afterwards.

This was Sexy Star getting revenge on Taya on what she did to her last week costing her to win the Cueto Cup. I sense a match between these two at Ultima Lucha Tres, but we’ll see when it happens.

Great match and Jeremiah Crane moves on to the quarter-finals of the Cueto Cup.

The backstage segment between Fenix and Aerostar was good. Fenix was working out backstage until Aerostar came in and told Fenix that he is betting on him to win the Cueto Cup. Aerostar and Fenix then started to talk about their issues with Drago and Fenix said that he hopes Drago sees the light as he did left the Reptile Tribe before. Aerostar then told Fenix that it may not be easy since he’s a time traveler and can see the future as Fenix didn’t believe it. Fenix then asked Aerostar if he will win as Aerostar laughed and left.

Both Fenix and Aerostar are still trying to get back Drago, but it seems like it’ll be a lot harder for them than they thought. Till then, Fenix is focusing on becoming the Cueto Cup winner. I don’t know if he will win the tournament, but I can see him going far. Good backstage segment here.

Paul London Vs. Mil Muertes in the round of sixteen in the Cueto Cup was a good match. I thought this match was going to be a complete squash match as Mil Muertes was going to demolish Paul London, but Paul London managed to get some surprising offense in this match which was interesting to see.

Paul London hit some nice superkicks and shooting star presses on Mil Muertes and seeing Mala Suerte and Saltador trying to help Paul London in this match was fun to watch as well. Mil Muertes was a beast in this match showing that he’s not a man to mess with as he hit a vicious clothesline and spear on Paul London that totally knocked him out. Good work from both men here.

The ending of the match came when Mil Muertes hit the reverse STO on Paul London for the pin and win. Despite Paul London losing here, he put up a good fight against Mil Muertes and Mil Muertes continues to be a beast as he moves on to the quarter-finals to face Jeremiah Crane which should be an intriguing match.

Good match and Mil Muertes moves on to the quarter-finals of the Cueto Cup.

The video segment between Beautiful Brenda, Texano, and Famous B was good. Texano was at a bar until Beautiful Brenda showed up and had a talk with Texano. Texano then told the bar tender to give them whiskey as they were drinking and talking to each other, Beautiful Brenda told Texano that he’s boring and dull. Texano then became pissed as he broke a beer bottle with his bare hands and told Beautiful Brenda that he’s not boring and dull. Beautiful Brenda then told Texano that he needs a woman’s touch as Famous B was smiling in the background.

It seems like Texano has fell into Famous B’s trap as Famous B got Texano in the palm of his hands thanks to Beautiful Brenda assisting him. Texano may need a character change since his current character isn’t going anywhere so let’s see what this storyline is heading towards to. Good video segment here.

We then get an announcement from Matt Striker and Vampiro that next week, it will be Cage Vs. Pindar, Prince Puma Vs. PJ Black, and Son of Havoc Vs. Dante Fox in the round of sixteen in the Cueto Cup. Those should be some interesting matches and I can’t wait to watch them next week.

Fenix Vs. Marty Martinez in the round of sixteen in the Cueto Cup was an excellent match. Mark out moment! When Melissa Santos was about to introduce Fenix to the ring, Marty Martinez had a lunchbox in his hand that had a sandwich in it as he fed it to Melissa Santos, but Melissa Santos spit out the sandwich on Marty Martinez’s face.

Man, Marty Martinez is really creepy now as he tried to feed Melissa Santos without her content. That’s like a random stranger walking up to you and offering you food and you have no idea who that person is or what that person is scheming. That’s how I view what Melissa Santos felt in that segment. She has some guts standing up against Marty Martinez. Anyway, back to the match itself.

Marty Martinez did excellent in this match as he tried to make Melissa Santos love him. The way he was working on Fenix’s face and mask throughout the match got him some great heel heat as even Mariposa got involved in it.

Fenix did excellent in this match as well as he wants to win the Cueto Cup. His reverse somersault dive on Marty Martinez to the outside was beautifully executed. Marty Martinez did a great job of being the heel in this match as the crowd got really behind Fenix here so that was great.

There was a certain point in the match where I thought it was over as Marty Martinez hit Fenix with a double underhook transitioned into a Gory Special dropped into a double knee facebreaker, but Fenix managed to kick out of it. That was impressive from Fenix there as I thought he would eat the pin right there, but he managed to survive. Excellent work from both men here.

The ending of the match came when Mariposa was about to hit Fenix with the lunchbox, but Melissa Santos came in and prevented Mariposa from hitting Fenix as Marty Martinez got distracted and Fenix pin Marty Martinez in a double wrist-clutch flip into a bridging cradle pin for the win. A good win for Fenix here as he moves on to the quarter-finals of the Cueto Cup and Melissa Santos is standing up for her man Fenix.

After the match, Marty Martinez laid out Fenix with the lunchbox. He then went into his lunchbox and grabbed a fork as he stabbed Fenix in the face with the fork as Mariposa hold Melissa Santos back to watch Fenix suffer from Marty Martinez. Marty Martinez then told Melissa Santos that he’s doing it for her and that he loves her as Melissa Santos went to check on Fenix after the assault.

Man, that was nasty when Marty Martinez put the fork on Fenix’s head. That must be gruesome. I can definitely see a mixed tag team match between Fenix and Melissa Santos Vs. Marty Martinez and Mariposa down the road, but Melissa Santos isn’t much of a wrestler so I question on how well that will play out. Either way, this feud intrigues me and I’m interested to see what happens next.

Excellent match and Fenix moves on to the quarter-finals of the Cueto Cup.

Overall, great show that helps build up storylines and feuds in the future as well as building up new characters. So many storylines and feuds here and I love it! Next week, the Cueto Cup continues with Cage Vs. Pindar, Prince Puma Vs. PJ Black, and Son of Havoc Vs. Dante Fox which should be great, looking forward to that. If you haven’t already, please check out Lucha Underground. It’s a great alternative to the mainstream wrestling and you won’t be disappointed. Looking forward to next week’s show. Lucha! Lucha! Lucha! Lucha!
