Lucha Underground 8/16/17 Review: Lucha! Lucha! Lucha! Lucha!

Lucha Underground on August 16, 2017 was a great show that helps build up storylines and feuds in the future as well as building up new characters. Let’s break it down:

We start off the show with a recap of what happened between Dario Cueto, Marty Martinez, Fenix, Melissa Santos, Mil Muertes, Catrina, Johnny Mundo, Rey Mysterio, and Captain Vasquez earlier in the season of Lucha Underground Season 3. This is a good way to remind people about what happened during that time in case they missed it or forgot about it because since they have been on a long break, it’s good to refresh people’s minds heading into this show so I appreciated that. Well done and well produced.

The backstage segment between Cage and Catrina was good. Cage was working out backstage until Catrina appeared out of nowhere and asked Cage is he knows what the gauntlet is. Cage responded by saying that the gauntlet is his and Catrina told him that it’s dangerous magic that will eventually take him over. He refused to give up the gauntlet to Catrina as Catrina told Cage that he will hate the hard way as Cage was about to hit Catrina with the gauntlet, but vanished.

Cage may not give the gauntlet to Catrina, but Catrina will have her man Mil Muertes grab the gauntlet from Cage for her. A feud/match between Cage and Mil Muertes is something that I want and I can’t wait to see when it happens. Good backstage segment here.

The backstage segment between Dario Cueto and Joey Ryan was good. Dario Cueto was in his office until Joey Ryan came in. Dario Cueto told Joey Ryan that he felt embarrassed for him for losing in the first round of the Cueto Cup. Joey Ryan then told Dario Cueto that Veneno is actually Cortez Castro. This led to Dario Cueto making a mask vs. mask match between Sexy Star and Veneno as he told Joey Ryan to leave his office as Joey Ryan left smiling.

Well Cortez Castro’s identity being Veneno was found out quick. I expect that Veneno is going to get his mask removed from Sexy Star next week, but we’ll see. Good backstage segment here.

Prince Puma Vs. Fenix in the semi-finals of the Cueto Cup was an excellent match. Mark out moment! These two have faced each other before in Lucha Underground and they delivered where they did it once again in this match.

Fenix did excellent in this match as he tried to win the Cueto Cup for Melissa Santos. Fenix’s counter to Prince Puma’s Northern Lights suplex into a hurricanrana pin was cool to see. His sunset flip powerbomb on Prince Puma looked devastating and his running kick to the back of Prince Puma’s head knocked Prince Puma out cold. Even though Marty Martinez tried to interfere in the match by playing with Melissa Santos at ringside, Fenix hit a beautiful springboard moonsault on Marty Martinez, but that moment cost him. Excellent work from Fenix here.

Prince Puma did excellent in this match as well as he tried to win the Cueto Cup for his master, Vampiro. His corkscrew 450 splash was beautifully executed despite missing. His knee strike and Michinoku Driver on Fenix looked devastating. Excellent work from Prince Puma here.

The ending of the match came when Prince Puma hit a 630 senton on Fenix for the pin and win. A great win for Prince Puma as he moves on to the finals of the Cueto Cup. Not only that, it continues the feud between Fenix and Marty Martinez so I’m interested to see how that feud will turn out once they meet each other again.

Excellent match and Prince Puma moves on to the finals of the Cueto Cup.

The backstage segment between Mil Muertes, Catrina, and Cage was good. Mil Muertes was working out backstage as he managed to pull off the punching bag as Sexy Star and Dario Cueto were trying to drink in the other backstage area and Dario Cueto’s office. Catrina then came in and told Mil Muertes to save his strength for Pentagon Dark.

Cage then appeared and attacked Mil Muertes from behind with a weight and his gauntlet as he stared at Catrina and left. Catrina then used her magic stone to make Mil Muertes rise and told him to break Pentagon Dark in two.

I don’t know if Cage wants to mess with Mil Muertes, but he got the better of him there. Pentagon Dark is going to have a tough task being Mil Muertes with his mood, but might take advantage of his condition. Good backstage segment here.

Pentagon Dark Vs. Mil Muertes in the semi-finals of the Cueto Cup was a great match. I like how Mil Muertes was selling the ribs as he made his entrance after the attack from Cage backstage so that was a nice touch.

Mil Muertes hit a nice TKO on Pentagon Dark on the floor. Pentagon Dark hit a nice variety of moves on Mil Muertes including a double knee facebreaker, a double knee backbreaker, and multiple superkicks. Great work from both men here.

The ending of the match came when Catrina tried to interfere in the match, but Pentagon Dark kicked Catrina in the face and hit a diving double foot stomp on Mil Muertes for the pin and win. Great win for Pentagon Dark as he moves on to the finals of the Cueto Cup to face Prince Puma which should be an excellent match.

After the match, Pentagon Dark tried to break Mil Muertes’ arm, but Mil Muertes managed to escape as Pentagon Dark stared at Catrina and Mil Muertes as they left.

Pentagon Dark may not have gotten Mil Muertes’ arm, but he got a win and moves on to the finals of the Cueto Cup. Cero Miedo!

Great match and Pentagon Dark moves on to the finals of the Cueto Cup.

The segment between the Lucha Underground roster hosted by Dario Cueto was excellent. Mark out moment! Dario Cueto is in the ring as he called out Rey Mysterio and Johnny Mundo to the ring as both men made their way to the ring. Johnny Mundo came out with security as he told Rey Mysterio that he is here to crush the dreams of Rey Mysterio and will take him to Slamtown next week. Johnny Mundo then talked about how Rey Mysterio’s son is bigger than Rey Mysterio is and that he got his size probably from his mother. He then asked Rey Mysterio if he’s really the father of his son.

This led to Rey Mysterio brawling with Johnny Mundo until security came in to tried to protect Johnny Mundo as Worldwide Underground came in to beat down Rey Mysterio. Worldwide Underground were beating down on Rey Mysterio until Dragon Azteca Jr., Sexy Star, and The Mack came in to make the save. Prince Puma and Pentagon Dark then arrived as they brawled with each other. Mil Muertes then arrived and cleaned house until Cage came in and also cleaned house as he goes to face to face with Mil Muertes as they began to brawl with each other. Jeremiah Crane later joined in the action as he fought off with Mil Muertes.

Marty Martinez then made his way from the stairs, but gets attacked by Fenix from behind as they began to brawl where Mariposa joined in on the action. Vinny Massaro and Joey Ryan then appeared while brawling with each other as The Rabbit Tribe sit on Dario Cueto’s office to watch the brawls. Dante Fox and Killshot then showed up and brawled with each other where Prince Puma hit a 630 senton off the top rope onto the floor onto the entire Lucha Underground roster! Mark out moment! That spot was awesome and I love it!

Rey Mysterio then hits a 619 (Tiger feint kick to the head of an opponent draped over the second rope) on Johnny Mundo and held the Lucha Underground Championship up in the air to stand tall.

Man, this segment was fun to watch even though there were so many things going on here, but that’s the fun of it. It was chaotic and it was fun to watch as they’re building feuds for everyone in the entire Lucha Underground roster. This makes me excited for Ultima Lucha Tres and for next week’s show so hands off to Lucha Underground for this show.

Excellent segment to close off the show as I can’t wait to watch next week’s show.

Overall, great show that helps build up storylines and feuds in the future as well as building up new characters. So many storylines and feuds here and I love it! Next week, we’re going to have a mask vs. mask match between Sexy Star and Veneno, the finals of the Cueto Cup between Prince Puma and Pentagon Dark, and Johnny Mundo Vs. Rey Mysterio for the Lucha Underground Championship which should be great, looking forward to that. If you haven’t already, please check out Lucha Underground. It’s a great alternative to the mainstream wrestling and you won’t be disappointed. Looking forward to next week’s show. Lucha! Lucha! Lucha! Lucha!
