Lucha Underground 8/23/17 Review: 619 and Slam Town Collides

Lucha Underground on August 23, 2017 was a great show that helps build up storylines and feuds in the future as well as building up new characters. Let’s break it down:

We start off the show with a recap of what happened between Dario Cueto, Prince Puma, Pentagon Dark, Joey Ryan, Veneno, Johnny Mundo, and Rey Mysterio earlier in the season of Lucha Underground Season 3. This is a good way to remind people about what happened during that time in case they missed it or forgot about it because since they have been on a long break, it’s good to refresh people’s minds heading into this show so I appreciated that. Well done and well produced.

Sexy Star Vs. Veneno in a Mask Vs. Mask match never got much in as the match was cut off extremely short. After Joey Ryan confronted Dario Cueto that Veneno is Cortez Castro, it led to this Mask Vs. Mask match.

Sexy Star did show some aggression towards Veneno after what Veneno has done to her for the past few months, but then Joey Ryan came in and took off the mask of Veneno where he was revealed to be Cortez Castro as they brawled with Joey Ryan hitting a low blow to Cortez Castro as he made his retreat while the referee called for the bell to end the match.

Well that kind of ended quickly and it kind of hinders the point of a Mask Vs. Mask match. However, it continues the feud between Cortez Castro and Joey Ryan so at least it accomplished something, but could have been done a lot of more effectively.

Can’t say much about the match, but what happened after the match was good as I want to see how Lucha Underground will build up to Cortez Castro Vs. Joey Ryan.

The backstage segment between Dario Cueto, Johnny Mundo, and Benjamin Cooke was good. Dario Cueto was in his office until Johnny Mundo and Benjamin Cooke came in and told Dario Cueto that he doesn’t appreciate Johnny Mundo after everything he has done to him. Johnny Mundo told Dario Cueto that he is upset after what happened last week because he could have been injured. Johnny Mundo then told Dario Cueto that he has other offers and could walk out if he wants to. Dario Cueto then told Johnny Mundo that everyone is banned from ringside and if anyone gets involved, they would be fired which includes Worldwide Underground. Johnny Mundo didn’t appreciate that, but Dario Cueto told him that he can do it on his own. He then told Dario Cueto that he will leave Lucha Underground if things don’t go his way as he leaves.

It seems like Johnny Mundo is scared of Rey Mysterio if he wanted Worldwide Underground by his side. I wonder how the match between Johnny Mundo and Rey Mysterio will go, but we’ll see later on the show. Good backstage segment here.

Prince Puma Vs. Pentagon Dark in the finals of the Cueto Cup was an excellent match. Mark out moment! These two went out there and delivered an amazing match where neither man looked weak in the process.

Pentagon Dark did excellent in this match as he tried to win the Cueto Cup to become the #1 Contender for the Lucha Underground Championship. Pentagon Dark’s double knee backbreaker on Prince Puma looked devastating. The way he countered Prince Puma’s tilt-a-whirl DDT into a backbreaker was cool to see. Pentagon Dark’s pumphandle driver and his diving front-flip piledriver on Prince Puma looked like it hurt Prince Puma’s neck. Excellent work from Pentagon Dark here.

Prince Puma did excellent in this match as well as he tried to win the Cueto Cup for his master, Vampiro. Prince Puma’s Northern Lights suplex into a vertical suplex on Pentagon Dark was well executed. Prince Puma with his springboard front-flip piledriver on Pentagon Dark looked devastating and his Super Frankensteiner on Pentagon Dark was cool to see. Excellent work from Prince Puma here.

The ending of the match came when Prince Puma hit a 630 senton on Pentagon Dark for the pin and win. Prince Puma is the winner of the Cueto Cup in an incredible contest with Pentagon Dark! Mark out moment! Prince Puma has come a long way to climb back up in the Lucha Underground Championship and he truly deserved this moment. Vampiro celebrated with Prince Puma after the match. Prince Puma will be in the main event of Ultima Lucha Tres as Dario Cueto handed him the Cueto Cup. Interested to see who will face Prince Puma for the Lucha Underground Championship at Ultima Lucha Tres.

Excellent match and congratulations to Prince Puma for being the Cueto Cup winner.

Johnny Mundo Vs. Rey Mysterio for the Lucha Underground Championship was an excellent match. Mark out moment! After weeks of build up, the match finally happens and they deliver where both men looked incredibly strong.

Rey Mysterio did excellent in this match as he tried to win the Lucha Underground Championship and get revenge for his son. His counter to Johnny Mundo’s double leg slam into a headscissors to the outside, his somersault dive into a hurricanrana on Johnny Mundo to the outside, his counter to Johnny Mundo’s double leg slam into a front-flip pliedriver, and his diving seated senton from the top rope to the floor on Johnny Mundo were cool to see. His tilt-a-whirl DDT on Johnny Mundo looked devastating.

Johnny Mundo did excellent in this match as well as he tried everything to make sure that he remains Lucha Underground Champion. His superkicks to Rey Mysterio looked devastating. His vertical suplex into a double knee backbreaker on Rey Mysterio looked devastating.

There was a certain spot in the match where I thought it was over when the referee was taken out and Johnny Mundo was about to hit Rey Mysterio with the Lucha Underground Championship, but Rey Mysterio’s son came in and hit a spear on Johnny Mundo to prevent it from happening as he made his escape. This led to Rey Mysterio taking advantage of the situation as he hit a 619 (Tiger feint kick to the head of an opponent draped over the second rope) to Johnny Mundo followed by a springboard splash, but Dario Cueto pulled the referee out of the ring before he made the three count. Wow, Dario Cueto is a cheap man as he costed Rey Mysterio a chance to win the Lucha Underground Championship. This led to Dario Cueto slapping Rey Mysterio as Rey Mysterio retaliated with a 619 to Dario Cueto. Excellent work from both men here and Dario Cueto got himself major heat for doing the interference.

The ending of the match came when Johnny Mundo hit Rey Mysterio with the Lucha Underground on the back of his head followed by The End of the World (Split-legged corkscrew moonsault) on Rey Mysterio for the pin and to retain the Lucha Underground Championship. Johnny Mundo took advantage of the situation and barely retain the Lucha Underground Championship thanks to the assist of Dario Cueto. After what happened in this match, I bet we’re going to have Rey Mysterio Vs. Matanza at Ultima Lucha Tres where it should be great. Looking forward to that when that happens. Not only that, it will be Johnny Mundo Vs. Prince Puma for the Lucha Underground Championship at Ultima Lucha Tres. Should be an excellent match and I can’t wait for that.

Excellent match as I’m intrigued on what the card for Ultima Lucha Tres will be in the next few weeks.

Overall, great show that helps build up storylines and feuds in the future as well as building up new characters. So many storylines and feuds here and I love it! Next week, we’re going to have the fallout of the Cueto Cup Finals which should be great, looking forward to that. If you haven’t already, please check out Lucha Underground. It’s a great alternative to the mainstream wrestling and you won’t be disappointed. Looking forward to next week’s show. Lucha! Lucha! Lucha! Lucha!
