NXT 9/20/17 Review: The War is On

NXT on September 20, 2017 was a good show that is building up characters as well as possibly building new feuds and storylines in the near future. Let’s break it down:

We start off the show with Johnny Gargano Vs. Tino Sabbatelli and it was a good match. As God-Gifted Athletes were making their entrance to the ring, we see a video of a backstage interview from last week when Vic Joseph interviewed Riddick Moss about his loss to Johnny Gargano where Riddick Moss that he didn’t come up short because it’s Johnny Gargano. Tino Sabbatelli then said that the win was a fluke and lightning can’t strike twice as he issued a challenge to Johnny Gargano which led to this match right here. Nice to see footage of this to see why this match is happening so that’s good. Let’s get back to the match itself.

Tino Sabbatelli had an impressive showing against Johnny Gargano as he hit a beautifully executed dropkick on Johnny Gargano and his counter to Johnny Gargano’s slingshot DDT into a scoop powerslam was nice to see. Johnny Gargano was being his usual self here, but at times, he wasn’t himself due to the split from #DIY. He still fought regardless. Good work from both men here.

The ending of the match came when Johnny Gargano locked Tino Sabbatelli in the Gargano Escape (Chickenwing over the shoulder crossface) to make Tino Sabbatelli tap for the win. Another win for Johnny Gargano as he’s looking to redeem himself after his loss to Andrade “Cien” Almas at NXT Brooklyn III. Johnny Wrestling!

Good match and I’m interested to see how Johnny Gargano will overcome the split of #DIY.

The backstage segment between William Regal and Roderick Strong was good. William Regal was in his office talking to a cameraman until someone knocked on the door as William Regal told the person to come in and it was none other than Roderick Strong. Roderick Strong told William Regal that he has defeated Bobby Roode and wants an NXT Championship match with Drew McIntyre as William Regal granted Roderick Strong’s wish and it will be Drew McIntyre Vs. Roderick Strong for the NXT Championship in two weeks. Roderick Strong thanked William Regal as he left.

After what Roderick Strong have gone through for the past few months, he is back on track and looks to become the next NXT Champion. He has that chance in two weeks so let’s see if he can succeed. Good backstage segment here.

We then get a recap of what happened two weeks ago when Asuka relinquished her NXT Women’s Championship. This is good as it shows what happened two weeks ago and it somewhat ties into the next segment which I will talk about next.

The backstage promo from Sonya Deville was good. Sonya Deville talked about how Asuka and she have never been in the same ring with each other and if they have, Sonya Deville would defeat Asuka and there would be no undefeated streak. She then said that with Asuka being gone, this is her chance to become NXT Women’s Champion and if anyone has a problem with that, then they better put their hair up and square up.

Sonya Deville did make a good point on how Asuka never faced her, but even if they did, I don’t think Sonya Deville would have a chance. However, she has a chance to do it now, but I personally don’t think she’s ready for this chance. We’ll see though. Good backstage promo here.

Lacey Evans Vs. Bianca Belair was a good women’s match. These two Mae Young Classic competitors went at it here and they delivered a good match that showcases their skills in the ring.

Lacey Evans hit a well executed swinging neckbreaker followed by a handstand splash on Bianca Belair. The way that Bianca Belair hit Lacey Evans with her hair as a whip looked painful. Good work from both women here.

The ending of the match came when Bianca Belair hit an alley oop on Lacey Evans for the pin and win. An impressive win for Bianca Belair as she has a lot of potentials to be a star in the NXT Women’s division. It’s only a matter of time.

Good women’s match and I’m intrigued on what’s next for Lacey Evans and Bianca Belair in NXT.

The promo segment between Aleister Black and The Velveteen Dream was great. Aleister Black came into the ring and talked about how started a journey fifteen years ago which led him to be in NXT. He then talked about he established a few other truths involving his scars.

As Aleister Black was about to continue, he was interrupted by The Velveteen Dream as he told Aleister Black that what fades to black must come to life as he entered the ring and stared down with Aleister Black. The Velveteen Dream thinks that Aleister Black is afraid to show emotion and that Aleister Black’s heart is in the wrong place. This led to Aleister Black hitting a spin kick to The Velveteen Dream’s hand as he knocked off the microphone from his hands as he did his usual pose afterward. The Velveteen Dream then crawled towards him and slithered out of the ring as he stared at Aleister Black from the entrance ramp.

It seems like we got a feud between Aleister Black and The Velveteen Dream and it’s an intriguing one too. Both men kind of need the win here so I’m interested to see how this feud will play out.

Great promo segment and I’m intrigued on how this feud between Aleister Black and The Velveteen Dream will go.

We then get a recap of the No Way Jose and Lars Sullivan feud for the past month as they will face each other next. This is good as it shows what happened between these two the past month and why they are feuding so this is good. Let’s talk about the match.

The backstage promo from Dakota Kai was good. Dakota Kai talked about how she may be new to NXT, but she’s not new to wrestling as she represents Team Kick. She then said that she doesn’t know the status of the NXT Women’s Championship, but she wants to become NXT Women’s Champion.

Oh my god, Dakota Kai has finally made her debut in NXT! Mark out moment! Okay, it’s only a backstage promo, but it’s great to see her regardless. Can’t wait until she makes her NXT in-ring debut. Good backstage promo here.

No Way Jose Vs. Lars Sullivan was a good match. After what happened between these two for the past month, it led to this match and it was a good match among the heavyweights in NXT.

No Way Jose got some nice strikes to Lars Sullivan to try to take him down, but to no avail, as Lars Sullivan rammed through No Way Jose with an impressive looking shoulder tackle. Not only that, Lars Sullivan managed to hit a diving headbutt on No Way Jose! Mark out moment! I didn’t expect a man his size to do something like that so that’s impressive. Good work from both men here.

The ending of the match came when Lars Sullivan hit a waist-lift side slam on No Way Jose for the pin and win. An impressive win for Lars Sullivan as he’s looking to make a statement in NXT.

Good match and I’m interested to see what’s next for No Way Jose and Lars Sullivan in NXT.

We then get an announcement that in two weeks, it will be Drew McIntyre Vs. Roderick Strong for the NXT Championship. That should be a great match, looking forward to it.

Moustache Mountain Vs. reDRagon was an excellent tag team match. Mark out moment! After what happened last week, it led to this tag team match and it was excellent.

Moustache Mountain did excellent in this match as they tried to show reDRagon that they shouldn’t be messed with. Trent Seven hit a well-executed wrist-lock into a short-arm lariat on Bobby Fish and Tyler Bate hit a beautiful standing shooting star press on Kyle O’Reilly. The belly-to-back suplex/powerbomb into a jackknife pin combination from Moustache Mountain on Kyle O’Reilly was innovative. Excellent work from Moustache Mountain here.

reDRagon did excellent in this match as well as they tried to prove their dominance in NXT. The way Kyle O’Reilly countered Tyler Bate’s sitout double underhook powerbomb into a guillotine choke was cool to see. The roundhouse kick into a vertical suplex combination from reDRagon on Tyler Bate looked devastating. The kick to the front and the kick to the back from reDRagon on Trent Seven looked painful. Excellent work from reDRagon here.

The ending of the match came when the referee was distracted from reDRagon as Adam Cole hit a superkick to Tyler Bate from ringside which led to reDRagon taking advantage over Trent Seven as they hit the leg lariat/legsweep kick on Trent Seven for the pin and win. An impressive win for reDRagon as they’re looking to make a name for themselves in the NXT tag team division.

After the match, Drew McIntyre made his way to the ring and before Adam Cole and reDRagon were about to fight Drew McIntyre, they retreated as they head towards the crowd area. They then stared at Drew McIntyre from the crowd area until SAnitY appeared right behind them as they began to brawl with each other. Adam Cole and reDRagon then began to retreat to the back as Drew McIntyre and SAnitY stood tall.

It seems like Drew McIntyre and SAnitY have their eyes set on Adam Cole and reDRagon and I don’t blame them after what they did to them back at NXT Brooklyn III and for the past few weeks. I can’t wait to see when they all feud with each other, it’s going to be awesome.

Excellent tag team match and great post-match as I’m looking forward to the feud between Drew McIntyre, SAnitY, Adam Cole, and reDRagon.

Overall, good show that is building up characters as well as possibly building new feuds and storylines in the near future. Next week, we will get the fallout of this week’s show and in two weeks, Drew McIntyre Vs. Roderick Strong for the NXT Championship which should be interesting to see. Looking forward to it. NXT! NXT! NXT!
