NXT 10/4/17 Review: Strong Being Undisputed?

on

NXT on October 4, 2017 was a great show that is building up characters as well as possibly building new feuds and storylines in the near future. Let’s break it down:

Before I talk about the show, let me said rest in peace to the people that have lost their lives in the Las Vegas shooting. It was an unfortunate incident and hopefully, an incident like that won’t happen ever again.

We start off the show with a video package highlighting Drew McIntyre and Roderick Strong as they will face each other in the main event for the NXT Championship later on the show. Should be an awesome match and I’m looking forward to it. Well produced video package here.

Ruby Riot & Nikki Cross Vs. The Iconic Duo was a good women’s tag team match. Ruby Riot was once again alone in this match until Nikki Cross came in and became Ruby Riot’s tag team partner once again. Despite Ruby Riot being hesitant at first, she ended up tagging in Nikki Cross.

The Iconic Duo continued to show their chemistry as a team as Peyton Royce hit a running bulldog on Nikki Cross with Nikki Cross landing on Billie Kay‘s knee which was cool to see. Ruby Riot hit a nice back springboard senton on Peyton Royce. Good work from both teams here.

The ending of the match came when Ruby Riot hit an overhead backflip kick on Billie Kay for the pin and win. Ruby Riot and Nikki Cross managed to get another victory over The Iconic Duo, but I have a feeling that these two will fight each other again down the line.

Good women’s tag team match and I’m intrigued if Ruby Riot and Nikki Cross will come to blows again.

We then get a recap of what happened last week when Lars Sullivan defeated Oney Lorcan and was about to finish Oney Lorcan off, but Danny Burch came in to make the save for Oney Lorcan. This is good as it shows what happened last week and it ties into the next segment which I will talk about next.

The interview with Lars Sullivan by Christy St. Cloud at the Performance Center was good. Lars Sullivan talked about how everyone needs to realize about who Lars Sullivan is and that he is always in control. He said that he’s in control, but his opponents are afraid of his uncontrollable rage in which they should be. He then said that Danny Burch needs to be in control next week of his fear.

Not a bad promo from Lars Sullivan here as he looks to continue his dominance in NXT. Let’s see how Danny Burch will go up against Lars Sullivan. Good interview here.

We then see Roderick Strong warming up backstage as he gets ready for his match against Drew McIntyre for the NXT Championship. Roderick Strong looked focused, but can he win the championship? We’ll find out soon enough.

The interview with Zelina Vega at Full Sail University was good. Zelina Vega was talking to someone on her phone as interviewers came up to her and asked her about Johnny Gargano getting his rematch with Andrade “Cien” Almas. She said that Johnny Gargano is still mad about the break up with Tommaso Ciampa and that she pulled Johnny Gargano’s heart strings due to her being a puppet master. She then said that Andrade “Cien” Almas will beat Johnny Gargano once again until he gets a shot at the NXT Championship. The interviewers then asked Zelina Vega on what happens if Andrade “Cien” Almas loses as she responded by saying that they brought Johnny Gargano back to life and they will end his lifeline.

Zelina Vega seemed very confident that Andrade “Cien” Almas could beat Johnny Gargano again. We’ll see if it will happen again next week. Good interview here.

We then get a recap of what happened last week when Adam Cole defeated Eric Young which will lead to SAnitY Vs. Undisputed Era in two weeks. Should be a fun six man tag team match when it happens. Looking forward to that.

Aleister Black Vs. Lio Rush never happened, but before I talked about that, Lio Rush has made his debut in NXT! Mark out moment! Lio Rush is known for his work in ROH so it’s great to see him here. Unfortunately, his debut didn’t end up going so well after Aleister Black made his entrance.

After Aleister Black made his entrance, Velveteen Dream came into the ring and attacked Lio Rush from behind as he finished Lio Rush off with the diving elbow drop. Velveteen Dream then told Aleister Black to come into the ring and as Aleister Black entered the ring, Velveteen Dream retreated and told Aleister Black to say his name as he headed to the back.

A shame that Lio Rush didn’t get to have a match, but this continued the feud between Aleister Black and Velveteen Dream as he wanted to get Aleister Black’s attention. I don’t know if Velveteen Dream will get that attention from Aleister Black, but only time will tell.

Good segment as I can’t wait to see Aleister Black and Velveteen Dream collided in the ring.

Kairi Sane Vs. Aliyah was a good women’s match. Kairi Sane has made her debut in NXT! Mark out moment! After winning the Mae Young Classic, she looks to become the next NXT Women’s Champion at NXT Houston.

Aliyah got some nice offense on Kairi Sane with her rolling neck snap while Kairi Sane showed what she can do in the ring as she hit a devastating spear on Aliyah as well as her running forearm smash to the corner. Good work from both women here.

The ending of the match came when Kairi Sane hit the diving elbow drop on Aliyah for the pin and win. Kairi Sane looking strong heading into NXT Houston.

Good women’s match and I can’t wait to see who will join Kairi Sane in the NXT Women’s Championship match at NXT Houston.

We then see Drew McIntyre backstage as he’s ready to face Roderick Strong for the NXT Championship which comes up next. Drew McIntyre looks like he’s ready to face Roderick Strong, but can he retain his NXT Championship? We’ll find out next.

We then get an announcement that next week, it will be Nikki Cross Vs. Liv Morgan Vs. Peyton Royce in an NXT Women’s Championship Qualifying match and Johnny Gargano Vs. Andrade “Cien” Almas. Those should be fun matches next week. Looking forward to them.

Drew McIntyre Vs. Roderick Strong for the NXT Championship was an excellent match. Mark out moment! Both of these men went out there and delivered an amazing match where either man could have gotten the win and it would have been believable.

Roderick Strong did excellent in this match as he tried to become NXT Champion. His backbreaker on Drew McIntyre on the steel steps looked painful as heck. His superplex on Drew McIntyre looked devastating. His jumping high knees on Drew McIntyre looked impactful. His double underhook powerbomb on Drew McIntyre was impressive.

Drew McIntyre did excellent in this match as well as he tried to retain his NXT Championship. His pop-up sitout spinebuster on Roderick Strong looked devastating. His over the shoulder belly-to-back piledriver on Roderick Strong from the second rope was impressive. His powerbomb to Roderick Strong on the ring post looked painful as heck and his sitout double underhook DDT on Roderick Strong looked devastating.

There was a spot in the match where I thought it was over as Roderick Strong hit a running single leg dropkick on Drew McIntyre, but Drew McIntyre managed to kick out. I thought it was over there as it was one of Roderick Strong’s finishers so seeing Drew McIntyre kicking out was surprising to me. Excellent work from both men here.

The ending of the match came when Drew McIntyre hit the Claymore (Running single leg dropkick) on Roderick Strong for the pin and win. An amazing win for Drew McIntyre as he managed to retain the NXT Championship. Despite Roderick Strong losing here, he looked excellent in defeat so he had nothing to be ashamed. However, once again, he was close to winning the NXT Championship, but not quite.

After the match, Drew McIntyre and Roderick Strong had a stare off with Drew McIntyre extending his hand towards Roderick Strong as Roderick Strong shook Drew McIntyre’s hand as he left the ring disappointed. As Roderick Strong headed up the ramp, Undisputed Era stood beside him and talked with Roderick Strong for a bit before they left.

Is Undisputed Era possibly trying to recruit Roderick Strong to join them? If so, Roderick Strong has a lot to consider. However, I feel like Roderick Strong should go on his own, but that’s just me. We’ll see where this goes.

Excellent match and I’m interested to see if Roderick Strong will join Undisputed Era or not.

Overall, great show that is building up characters as well as possibly building new feuds and storylines in the near future. Next week, we will get Nikki Cross Vs. Liv Morgan Vs. Peyton Royce in an NXT Women’s Championship Qualifying match and Johnny Gargano Vs. Andrade “Cien” Almas which should be interesting to see. Looking forward to it. NXT! NXT! NXT!
