NXT 10/18/17 Review: Pain Has Return

NXT on October 18, 2017 was a good show that is building up characters as well as possibly building new feuds and storylines in the near future. Let’s break it down:

We start off the show with a video package highlighting the feud between SAnitY and Undisputed Era as they will face each other in a six-man tag team match in the main event. Some good build up and hype for the main event later on the show. Well produced video package here.

Ruby Riot Vs. Ember Moon Vs. Sonya Deville in a qualifying match for the NXT Women’s Championship was great. These three women were trying to fight for a spot in the NXT Women’s Championship match at NXT Houston and they did just that.

Ruby Riot hit a nice diving crossbody on Sonya Deville and Ember Moon to the outside and her overhead backflip kick on Ember Moon looked devastating. The way Sonya Deville countered Ember Moon’s back springboard crossbody into a spear was well done. The way Ember Moon countered Sonya Deville’s Lou Thesz press with a single leg dropkick was well executed. Great work from all three women here.

The ending of the match came when Sonya Deville was locking in an ankle lock on Ruby Riot, but Ember Moon hit The Eclipse (Diving corkscrew stunner) on Sonya Deville where Ember Moon pin Ruby Riot for the win. A great win for Ember Moon as she joins Kairi Sane and Peyton Royce in the NXT Women’s Championship match at NXT Houston.

Great women’s match and I can’t wait to see who will fill in the last spot of the NXT Women’s Championship match at NXT Houston.

We then get footage of what happened earlier in the week as Roderick Strong was out in the parking lot until he bumped into Undisputed Era as they were talking for a bit as Adam Cole handed Roderick Strong a t-shirt. Roderick Strong then gave the t-shirt back to Adam Cole as he left as Undisputed Era questioned the decision that Roderick Strong made.

It seems like Roderick Strong has no intention of joining Undisputed Era. However, I don’t think Undisputed Era will give up on trying to recruit Roderick Strong just yet as they will do everything in their power to make Roderick Strong join them. We’ll see how they do it.

The backstage segment between William Regal and The Iconic Duo with Christy St. Cloud was good. Christy St. Cloud was interviewing William Regal backstage about the NXT Women’s Championship match at NXT Houston where William Regal said that he is happy to announce how he will decide the final participant in that match.

Before he could say it, he was interrupted by The Iconic Duo where Billie Kay told William Regal that it will be her. William Regal told Billie Kay that she will be in a qualifying match, but in a battle royal as Billie Kay left feeling frustrated as Peyton Royce stared at William Regal before leaving.

Well, Billie Kay has a chance to be in that NXT Women’s Championship match at NXT Houston, but she has to win a battle royal to do it. Don’t know if she will succeed, but we’ll have to wait and see. Good backstage segment here.

Aleister Black Vs. Raul Mendoza was a good match. Aleister Black is back in action after not competing two weeks ago due to Velveteen Dream attacking his opponent. Before the actual match, Velveteen Dream appeared and took Aleister Black’s vest as Aleister Black was distracted by this where Raul Mendoza took advantage. It seems like Aleister Black does have some attention towards Velveteen Dream, but not the attention he thought. Anyway, back to the match itself.

Raul Mendoza hit a nice springboard senton on Aleister Black while Aleister Black hit a nice middle rope springboard moonsault on Raul Mendoza. Good work from both men here.

The ending of the match came when Aleister Black hit Raul Mendoza with Black Mass (Spin kick) for the pin and win. Another win for Aleister Black as he continues his undefeated streak as he even looked at Velveteen Dream as he walked to the back showing that Velveteen Dream has his attention. I can’t wait to see these two collide as I think it could be a great match between the two. Fade to black!

Good match and I want to see what happens next in this feud between Aleister Black and Velveteen Dream.

The backstage segment between Drew McIntyre and Zelina Vega by Christy St. Cloud was great. Christy St. Cloud was interviewing Drew McIntyre backstage in a sitdown interview as she asked Drew McIntyre about the journey to getting the NXT Championship. Drew McIntyre responded by saying that it’s weird to say it out loud as he had this dream for a few years now and he has worked so hard to be where he is today.

He talked about how he was released from WWE a few years ago and how that damaged him a bit as he was trying to figure out what to do after his release as it was the only job he ever had. He then talked about how he jad just moved into an apartment with his girlfriend and that lit a fire under him as it motivated him to get back to where he is today.

As he was about to continue his story, he was interrupted by Zelina Vega as Zelina Vega told Christy St. Cloud to step aside as Christy St. Cloud went away. Zelina Vega told Drew McIntyre that he and Andrade “Cien” Almas have a lot in common where they both got a second chance and rose from that tough spot. She then told Drew McIntyre that Andrade “Cien” Almas wants a shot at the NXT Championship.

Drew McIntyre then told Zelina Vega that if Andrade “Cien” Almas wants a match against him, he should ask William Regal about it. Zelina Vega then told Drew McIntyre that the champion has the right to decide whether or not Andrade “Cien” Almas should get a shot or not. Drew McInttyre then responded by saying that if Andrade “Cien” Almas wants a match against him, he should tell him face-to-face as Zelina Vega agreed to it as she left.

It seems like Andrade “Cien” Almas wants a NXT Championship match against Drew McIntyre and in order to do that, Andrade “Cien” Almas must meet Drew McIntyre face-to-face, one on one. I guess we have ourselves a future NXT Championship match down the line potentially at NXT Houston. We’ll have to wait and see. Great backstage segment here.

Kassius Ohno Vs. Cezar Bononi was a good match. These two had a good match against each other as it was the veteran against the upcoming rookie.

Cezar Bononi got some nice offense on Kassius Ohno with his dropkicks, but Kassius Ohno was too much for him as Kassius Ohno finished Cezar Bononi off with a discus elbow smash towards the back of the head for the pin and win. Another win for Kassius Ohno as he’s looking to make to climb back up the ladder of the NXT Championship picture. When you see Kassius coming, you say Ohno!

Good match and I can’t wait to see what plans NXT has Kassius Ohno in the near future.

It was announced that in two weeks, it will be Johnny Gargano Vs. Fabian Aichner and next week, there will be a battle royal to determine who will be in the NXT Women’s Championship match at NXT Houston. Looks to be good stuff to me. Looking forward to it.

SAnitY Vs. Undisputed Era was a great six man tag team match for what it was. After these two teams having issues with each other for the past two months, they finally went to blows and it was great.

SAnitY showed great teamwork in this match as they tried to get revenge on Undisputed Era for what they did to them at NXT Brooklyn III. Eric Young and Alexander Wolfe hit Kyle O’Reilly with a nice gutbuster/diving fist drop combination. They also hit a nice belly-to-back suplex/jumping neckbreaker combination on Kyle O’Reilly. Killian Dain was a beast in this match as he hit Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly with a front missle dropkick/running senton combination as well as a Samoan drop/fallaway slam combination. Undisputed Era did great as well as they look to continue their dominance in NXT. The teamwork that Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly did was well seen as they hit a nice double kick to the chest and a nice double suplex. Adam Cole hit a devastating superkick to Killian Dain. Great work from both teams here.

The ending of the match came when SAnitY was to finish Kyle O’Reilly off with a powerbomb/belly-to-back suplex/neckbreaker combination, but Authors of Pain made their return and took out SAnitY! Mark out moment! Man, I thought Authors of Pain would go to the main roster after NXT Brooklyn III, but it seems like Authors of Pain are staying in NXT a little longer so that’s cool.

After the match, Authors of Pain took out Alexander Wolfe and Eric Young at ringside and eventually took down Killian Dain in the ring by hitting the Russian legsweep/running clothesline combination on Killian Dain. Authors of Pain then hit Alexander Wolfe and Eric Young with the Super Collider (Stereo powerbombs, after colliding their opponents) as they stared at Undisputed Era who retreated up the ramp as they stood tall with the NXT Tag Team Championships.

It seems like Authors of Pain want their NXT Tag Team Championships back and I have a feeling we’re going to get a three-way tag team match between SAnitY, Undisputed Era, and Authors of Pain for the NXT Tag Team Championships at NXT Houston which should be a lot of fun. Hope it happens.

Great match and great post-match as I’m looking forward to the potential three-way tag team match between SAnitY, Undisputed Era, and Authors of Pain.

Overall, a good show that is building up characters as well as possibly building new feuds and storylines in the near future. Next week, we will get a battle royal to determine who will be in the NXT Women’s Championship match and in two weeks, we will get Johnny Gargano Vs. Fabian Aichner which should be interesting to see. Looking forward to it. NXT! NXT! NXT!
