NXT War Games Review: This is War!

NXT War Games on November 18 was an excellent show. Now do I think that this NXT live special is the best one out of all of the NXT live specials? In my personal opinion, I think that answer is yes as it even beat NXT Dallas for me as it had great to excellent matches, great moments, and great surprises throughout the whole show. Let’s break this down:

The pre-show was pretty good as always as we have Charly Caruso, Sam Roberts, and Booker T doing the pre-show panel. Charly Caruso did great for these pre-show panels so she did her job. Sam Roberts and Booker T did their jobs in the pre-show panel as they give their thoughts and predictions on the matches.

I thought all three of them did very well for analyzing and predicting on the matches later on giving the matches history and purpose on why it’s happening which is great to see. Seeing Andrade “Cien” Almas, Zelina Vega, and Drew McIntyre heading to the arena was cool to see as it shows how ready they are and they’re going to appear on the show. Seeing Kayla Braxton interacting with the fans was cool to see. The video packages of the matches were great to see as well as they made me hyped up for the show later on the show.

The backstage interview with The Iconic Duo by Christy St. Cloud was good. Christy St. Cloud was supposed to interview Peyton Royce about her upcoming match, but Billie Kay told Christy St. Cloud to go away as she left. Billie Kay then interviewed Peyton Royce about her match as Peyton Royce said that she’s in the best shape of her life and is ready. Peyton Royce then said that the other women in the NXT Women’s Championship match are not iconic and that she will be the next NXT Women’s Champion.

It seems like Peyton Royce is really feeling confident heading into her match at NXT War Games. We’ll see if she will win the NXT Women’s Championship later in the show. Good backstage interview here.

Pretty good pre-show to hype the matches for NXT War Games. Now, let’s get to the main card!

Now before I get into the show itself, the crowd in NXT War Games was incredible. The crowd throughout the whole show were into it from beginning to end and I appreciated that a lot. A great crowd from Houston for this show. Also, the commentary team for this show contains Mauro Ranallo, Percy Watson, and Nigel McGuinness. Great work from the commentary team here.

I also wish that Triple H would come on the stage that introduced the NXT crowd like he did in several NXT live specials, but it didn’t happen and I’m okay with it. The video package was well produced and the ring was set up differently as we have two rings instead of one for the War Games match which made it stand out and different. Anyway, let’s talk about the show!

We start off the show with Kassius Ohno Vs. Lars Sullivan and it was a great match. Both men here looking to make a statement in NXT and they did in this match. Lars Sullivan had a pretty cool entrance for this show with the lights and everything which made him stand out. Check it out here if you haven’t seen it yet.

Kassius Ohno did great in this match as he tried to take down the monster that is Lars Sullivan. His elbow smashes on Lars Sullivan looked devastating and his discus big boot on Lars Sullivan was well executed. Lars Sullivan did great in this match as well as he showed why he is a beast inside the ring. His running shoulder tackle from the ring apron to the floor on Kassius Ohno was impressive and his clothesline on Kassius Ohno looked devastating. Great work by both men here.

The ending of the match came when Kassius Ohno was about to hit Lars Sullivan with the discus elbow smash, but Lars Sullivan countered it with a waist-lift side slam on Kassius Ohno for the pin and win. An impressive win for Lars Sullivan as he continues to get better everytime he’s in the ring. I question who can stop Lars Sullivan at this point.

Great match and I’m interested to see if anyone can stop Lars Sullivan.

We then see Moustache Mountain, Mark Andrews, and Wolfgang in the crowd! Mark out moment for all of them being on this show! Nice to see the UK guys being on the show here as I still want to see that UK show on the WWE Network so give it to me dang it.

We then see Undisputed Era backstage as they were discussing strategy for the War Games match later on the show as William Regal came in and talked with them for a bit before leaving. It seems like Undisputed Era has a plan, but let’s see if they can execute it.

Aleister Black Vs. Velveteen Dream was an excellent match. Mark out moment! Wow, just wow. These two men went out there and delivered an excellent match that told an excellent story inside the ring and it was incredible. The entrance for Aleister Black was cool to see and you can check it out here.

Velveteen Dream also had a cool entrance as well, but not only that, he also had an interesting attire with Aleister Black on one side of his tights, himself on the other side, and NXT in the middle. Cool to see Velveteen Dream going crazy with this one and here’s his entrance for those who want to see it.

Velveteen Dream did excellent in this match as he was trying to get Aleister Black to say his name. The way he was playing his character and the way he was playing mind games with Aleister Black with the story that they had for the past few months was excellent in-ring storytelling. His superkick on Aleister Black looked devastating and his swinging DDT on Aleister Black looked like it knocked out Aleister Black for a moment. Excellent performance from Velveteen Dream here.

Aleister Black also did excellent in this match as he tried to teach Velveteen Dream a lesson about respect. Just like with Velveteen Dream, the way he was playing his character and playing mind games with Velveteen Dream with the story that they had for the past few months was excellent in-ring storytelling. His middle-rope springboard moonsault on Velveteen Dream was well executed and his running knee strike on Velveteen Dream looked devastating. Excellent performance from Aleister Black here.

The ending of the match came when Aleister Black hit Velveteen Dream with Black Mass (Spin kick) for the pin and win. A great win for Aleister Black as he’s still undefeated in NXT and despite Velveteen Dream losing here, he looked excellent in defeat so he had nothing to be ashamed of.

After the match, Aleister Black cut a promo on Velveteen Dream as he told Velveteen Dream to enjoy infamy while saying his name as he left the ring.

Velveteen Dream may not get the victory over Aleister Black, but Aleister Black said his name which has to be a huge compliment for Velveteen Dream there as Aleister Black finally acknowledges him. Velveteen Dream is a star in the making so keep an eye on him in NXT and WWE for the years to come.

Excellent match and I can’t wait to see what’s next for Aleister Black and Velveteen Dream in NXT.

We then see SAnitY backstage warming up until William Regal came in and talked with Eric Young before getting cut off. SAnitY are looking ready for the War Games match. Let’s see if they will create chaos in War Games.

We then see Asuka, Funaki, and Finn Balor at ringside! Mark out moment to all three of them! Nice to see them there as they’re probably there to support the women in the NXT Women’s Championship match. Should be a great one.

Kairi Sane Vs. Ember Moon Vs. Nikki Cross Vs. Peyton Royce for the NXT Women’s Championship was an excellent women’s match. Mark out moment! All of these women went out there and delivered a fun match where neither woman looked weak in this match.

Nikki Cross did excellent in this match as she tried to bring the NXT Women’s Championship into chaos. Her diving crossbody onto Kairi Sane, Ember Moon, and Peyton Royce was well executed. Her swinging fisherman’s neckbreaker on Kairi Sane and her swinging neckbreaker on Ember Moon from the top rope looked devastating. Excellent work from Nikki Cross here.

Kairi Sane did excellent in this match too as she tried to become the NXT Women’s Champion after winning the Mae Young Classic. Her spear on Peyton Royce looked devastating and her diving elbow drop on Peyton Royce and Nikki Cross looked like it hurt. Excellent work from Kairi Sane here.

Peyton Royce did excellent in this match too as she tried to become the NXT Women’s Champion and being forever iconic. Her fisherman suplex on Nikki Cross was well executed. The spot where Peyton Royce hit a German suplex on Ember Moon while Ember Moon hit a superplex on Kairi Sane was a cool spot. Excellent work from Peyton Royce here.

Ember Moon did excellent in this match as well as she tried to become NXT Women’s Champion after failing to do so the previous two times. Her suicide dive through the bottom rope on Kairi Sane and Peyton Royce was beautifully executed and her powerbomb on Nikki Cross on the floor looked devastating. Excellent work from Ember Moon here.

The ending of the match came when Ember Moon hit The Eclipse (Diving corkscrew stunner) on Peyton Royce and Nikki Cross as she pins Nikki Cross to win the NXT Women’s Championship! Mark out moment! Ember Moon totally deserved to be the NXT Women’s Championship after working so hard for the past year and she finally did it. Congratulations Ember Moon!

After the match, William Regal came into the ring and was about to hand Ember Moon the NXT Women’s Championship, but Asuka came in and gave Ember Moon the NXT Women’s Championship. Ember Moon then hugged Asuka as William Regal and Asuka raised the hands of Ember Moon.

It was nice to see Asuka giving the NXT Women’s Championship to Ember Moon after their incredible rivalry between each other earlier this year. A shame that Asuka didn’t put Ember Moon over on her way out, but this was a great moment for her and I would love to see these two face off once again in the main roster.

Excellent women’s match and congratulations to Ember Moon for being the new NXT Women’s Champion!

We then see Roderick Strong, Paul Ellering, and Authors of Pain talking to each other backstage until William Regal came in and talked with them before leaving. Roderick Strong and Authors of Pain are looking to win War Games, but let’s see if they can succeed with the help of Paul Ellering.

We then see Kevin Owens and Samoa Joe in the crowd! Mark out moment for both! Both former NXT Champions are at this show as they’re looking to see the NXT Championship. Should be a great one.

Drew McIntyre Vs. Andrade “Cien” Almas for the NXT Championship was an excellent match. Mark out moment! These two went out there and delivered an awesome match where neither man looked weak and both men looked strong coming out of the match. The entrance for Drew McIntyre was him wearing his kilt and you can see it here in the video below.

Drew McIntyre did excellent in this match as he tried to make a man out of Andrade “Cien” Almas. His sitout powerbomb on Andrade “Cien” Almas looked devastating and his double underhook DDT on Andrade “Cien” Almas looked like it knocked out Andrade “Cien” Almas for a bit.

Andrade “Cien” Almas did excellent in this match as well as he tried to become NXT Champion. His moonsault to the outside on Drew McIntyre was beautifully executed. His double knees to the corner on the back of Drew McIntyre’s head looked devastating.

There were several points in this match where I thought either man could have won and it would have been believable. The way Andrade “Cien” Almas distracted the referee to let Zelina Vega hit a hurricanrana driver on Drew McIntyre which led to Andrade “Cien” Almas taking advantage by hitting a Hammerlock DDT on Drew McIntyre, but Drew McIntyre managed to kick out. Wow, I thought the match was over there, but Drew McIntyre managed to kick out. Impressive.

There was another spot in the match where Drew McIntyre hit a Claymore (Running single leg dropkick) on Andrade “Cien” Almas, but Zelina Vega put the foot of Andrade “Cien” Almas on the bottom rope to break the pin. Wow, if it weren’t for Zelina Vega, I think Drew McIntyre would have won there. Excellent work from both men here.

The ending of the match came when Andrade “Cien” Almas hit a rope hung DDT on Drew McIntyre for the pin and to win the NXT Championship! Mark out moment! Wow, I didn’t expect Andrade “Cien” Almas to win the championship at all as I thought Drew McIntyre was going to retain, but Andrade “Cien” Almas worked so hard for the past year to reinvent himself and now he is the new NXT Champion! You deserved it Andrade “Cien” Almas! Tranquilo!

After the match, Andrade “Cien” Almas and Zelina Vega were celebrating in the ring, on the ramp, and on the announce table as Andrade “Cien” Almas hold the NXT Championship up high as doctors checked in on Drew McIntyre. Hope Drew McIntyre is okay as it seemed like he may have suffered an injury so hopefully, he’s okay and he will be back soon. Till then, “El Idolo” is the new NXT Champion.

Excellent match and hope that Drew McIntyre is okay and congratulations to Andrade “Cien” Almas!

We then see the cage being lowered down for the War Games as the match is coming up next. It has been twenty years since the last War Games match and we’re going to see it again here. It should be amazing.

We then see Dustin Rhodes and Arn Anderson in the crowd! Mark out moment for both of them! Nice to see the two men that have went through the War Games match back in the past as they’re here to witness history as War Games has returned. Let’s see how this match will turn out.

SAnitY Vs. Roderick Strong & Authors of Pain Vs. Undisputed Era in a War Games match was excellent. Mark out moment! Even though the War Games match have been changed a bit, the match was still awesome in its own right as the match had its own incredible moments and these three teams went out there and delivered. I will be talking the match into parts when the teams entered the ring so let’s get to it!

The match started off with Eric Young Vs. Roderick Strong Vs. Adam Cole in the ring as they did well for themselves for the first five minutes until the next team arrived. Adam Cole hit a nice fireman’s carry onto a knee on Eric Young and Roderick Strong was impressive with his knee strikes on Eric Young and Adam Cole.

Undisputed Era was the first team to enter the match along with Adam Cole as they’re looking to shock the system. The running forearm smashes on Eric Young and Roderick Strong by Adam Cole and Kyle O’Reilly followed by the running back elbow on Eric Young and Roderick Strong by Bobby Fish on the steel cage showed great teamwork among the three men. The assisted wheelbarrow suplex from Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly onto Roderick Strong was impressive. The vertical suplex/roundhouse kick/superkick combination from Undisputed Era on Roderick Strong looked impressive. The legsweep/running lariat combination from Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly on Akam looked impactful.

Authors of Pain were the next team to enter the match as they tried to help Roderick Strong and to create pain. The way Authors of Pain threw Eric Young and Adam Cole onto the second ring was impressive. The way the Authors of Pain threw Roderick Strong onto Undisputed Era and Eric Young was innovative and great teamwork. The Death Valley Drivers from Authors of Pain on Adam Cole and Bobby Fish onto Eric Young and Kyle O’Reilly to the corners looked devastating. Roderick Strong’s offense on everyone was cool to see as he even hit an impressive Olympic Slam on Killian Dain. Their Super Collider (Stereo powerbombs after colliding with their opponents) from Authors of Pain on Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly with Killian Dain in the middle was impressive. Their running clothesline/Russian legsweep combination from Authors of Pain on Killian Dain looked devastating.

SAnitY was the final team in this match as they tried to create chaos. Alexander Wolfe brought a nightstick to the match and hit devastating shots at Authors of Pain and Roderick Strong with the nightstick. The way that SAnitY brought weapons into War Games made the match extreme and it was awesome. Killian Dain was extremely impressive as he hit a nice running front missile dropkick and running senton on Authors of Pain. Killian Dain’s Michinoku Driver II on Adam Cole on top of Bobby Fish looked devastating. The springboard neckbreaker from Eric Young onto Akam was well executed. The belly-to-back suplex/jumping neckbreaker combination from Eric Young and Alexander Wolfe on Kyle O’Reilly looked impactful.

There were several spots in this match that were insane that I can’t believe they did. The spot where SAnitY and Undisputed Era had Roderick Strong and Eric Young in a double super belly-to-back suplex with Authors of Pain hitting a powerbomb on them was a cool spot. The super German suplex from Alexander Wolfe on Akam through two tables was incredible! Mark out moment! Man, that was an awesome spot, but it made Alexander Wolfe bled so I hope he’s okay after that.

There was another spot where Killian Dain did a corner-to-corner dropkick on Kyle O’Reilly holding a trash can! Mark out moment! You don’t see a big man like that do that often and Killian Dain showed that it can be done. Awesome. The final incredible spot in this match was when Roderick Strong hit a superplex on Adam Cole from the top of the cage onto everyone in the ring! Mark out moment! Wow, that was extreme lengths that those two did up there and it was amazing. Excellent work by all three teams here.

The ending of the match came when Adam Cole hit Eric Young with a kendo stick followed by a shining wizard on Eric Young with Eric Young holding a chair for the pin and win. Wow, what an amazing match, but the finish could have been a lot better than what it was. Undisputed Era has survived War Games and I’m pretty sure that they’re next in line for the NXT Tag Team Championships. Adam Cole Bay Bay!

Excellent War Games and I can’t wait to see what’s next for Undisputed Era, SAnitY, Roderick Strong, and Authors of Pain after this match.

Overall, excellent show by NXT. Like I said before, I think this is the best NXT live special that NXT has done so far since doing these NXT live specials. The show had great to excellent matches with some memorable moments that won’t be forgotten.

Another successful NXT live special and I can’t wait for the next one which is NXT Philadelphia which should be great. We are the Natural eXhilarating Talents! We are the next generation! We are the future and the future is now! We are NXT! NXT! NXT! NXT!
