WWE Planning Big Things With Kota Ibushi

Kota Ibushi, the top Japanese junior heavyweight, was one of the 32 names announced for the WWE Cruiserweight Classic this past week but the company already has bigger plans for him. Ibushi is the top star and the ringer in the tournament, reports Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer newsletter. It’s expected that he will be booked strong in the tournament and will then be offered a deal with NXT since they are aggressively pursuing new talent to fill NXT because many of the current NXT names will be moving up to the main roster for the brand split.

Ibushi was shown at ringside at NXT TakeOver: Dallas. Finn Balor was the person who made the call to Ibushi back in February to let him know that WWE wanted to talk with him. Ibushi told the Japanese media this week that WWE made him an offer in Dallas and he even met Vince McMahon but he declined the offer at that time. WWE persisted and he finally accepted their offer to wrestle in the Cruiserweight Classic but, as of this writing, has yet to sign a full-time deal for NXT.

In 2013, Ibushi became the first wrestler in Japan to sign a full-time contract with two promotions at the same time. A spinal injury kept him on the sidelines in late 2015 and early 2016 but was cleared to wrestle again in February. He announced his decision to leave DDT and NJPW, in part, because he was burned out from working two schedules.
